I've known the Red Lion for years. It's the kind of place you visit to experience the quintessential English village pub. Sometimes in the summer you may well encounter a band of Morris Men. No dancers today but we had gone to listen to Hullabaloo, an excellent Swing band that my son wants to book for his wedding. So we took in lunch as well. Sunday lunch is served from 11 to 2.00. We came right on the final whistle, ordering two of their burgers, a salmon dish and a Thai curry. The food was fine- a pity that the roast new potatoes with the salmon had been sitting around for a couple of hours since they were a bit past it. Otherwise, the meals were fine and the Thai curry was surprisingly good. Desserts were all proper home-made dishes with proper custard (or cream, or ice-cream...). It's a real ale pub so the beer was excellent.
The only moan, apart from the potatoes, was the chaotic organisation of the bar staff. With four or five of them getting in each others way, they still took ridiculously long ages to serve you and, in a busy, popular pub, that's got to be a disadvantage.
Outside a big garden with nice climbingy / slidey apparatus for children was a big hit with our toddler grandson and that's always better than trying to keep a two-year old entertained in a pub. It's actually a very nice friendly pub serving pretty good food. It was a pity they did not tell us that, around 3pm, they'd start serving a hog roast - we might have foregone the lunch for this much cheaper and equally wholesome option.
And the band? They were very, very good and, yes, we'll book them.
