I have traveled it several times, both ways, and prefer going from Harbor Springs to Cross Village rather than the other way. I have only taken this road in summer. Then the best time of day is late afternoon, when the sun is shining from the west or northwest, and the light comes in sideways from the lake side across the road into the heavy forest on the east and north side of the road. The sunlight reflecting off the lake up through the trees is remarkable. The time of day varies from one month to the next, do this at least 3 hours before sunset.
Other times of the day much of the road will be in deep shade. If you are driving from north to south at noon you will mostly have the sun in your face & won't see nearly as much or as well.
Do watch out for deer. This road has very narrow shoulders, winds a lot, & the grass grows thick in the ditches along the road sides, making perfect spots for deer to hide until they jump out.
