“Perfect Piroscafo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

What a lovely little hotel! It has the most beautiful location, right on the little inner harbour, so all the town's amenities are a few steps away, yet good double glazing means there is no noise. The hotel is simply yet nicely furnished, and immaculately clean. The bedrooms are certainly small but perfectly adequate, with nice touches such as slippers, kettle, toiletries. Good quality towels changed daily.
The staff are very friendly and know your room number almost immediately. Breakfast a good selection of cereals, fruit, meats, cheese, pastries. Just what you would expect in Italy.
Would definitely recommend if you are looking for bed and breakfast only in a central location, yet a 5 minute walk from the beach and 2 minutes from the ferry terminal

Room Tip: No need for balcony room. Ones at back are nice and quiet.

Hotel Pirascafo is perfectly situated in the town of Desenzano, overlooking the picturesque little harbour surrounded by pavement cafes. It is handy for everything, right by the town square and just around the corner from the ferries and a short walk from the sunbathing areas of the lake. I would say the hotel is a quiet oasis of calm in this vibrant lakeside town, and was surprisingly quiet at night.

Our room was quite contemporary (wall mounted flat screen tv) and adequate in size, spotlessly clean, with good air conditioning – a relief to come back to after outdoor temperatures of 30+. My husband found the mattress a little too firm and we had sheets and a blanket - I missed our duvet! We had french doors that opened out onto a shared terrace with nice views of the harbour. Wi-Fi was very hit and miss. Neither of us could use our ipads in the room and had to go to a communal area on the landing. There is a kettle and cups in the room but no tea bags or coffee – I don't know if this is usual on the continent or just a cost cutting exercise. We took tea bags and milk jug from breakfast. The bathroom has retro lurid green tiling, with contrasting white bathroom suite and crisp white towels. The shower curtain sticks to you which is difficult to avoid and mildly annoying. Access to the bedrooms is by spiral staircase or (with luggage) the tiniest lift in the world.

Breakfast was continental only, at first glance plenty of choice but the variety never changed in the five days we stayed. I would describe this as a good b&b rather than a hotel as the only meal provided was breakfast. It is in such a perfect spot and has a large dining room with outside terrace, such a shame not to do evening meals - not that we weren't spoilt for choice elsewhere!

The staff are very helpful and courteous and engaged in conversation, the receptionist booked a table for us at a restaurant and we were also allowed some extra time to leave our room on check out. We had an enjoyable experience at this non-pretentious hotel.

What can I say about this hotel that hasn't been said already? Excellent location , very picturesque, spotlessly clean, staff very pleasant and helpful. I am disabled and everything was in easy reach for me,location wise. I would definitely stay here again. The evenings were especially nice, sitting outside with a drink whilst live music played on the square, watching the twinkling lights on the small harbour.

Room Tip: We had a room looking onto a small courtyard which was very peaceful

Really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Piroscafo. Ideal location in the centre of town, close to everything but not noisy and right on the old port - the prettiest part of Desenzano. Helpful staff, nice, clean, large,air-conditioned rooms at the back of the hotel. Balcony and outdoor tables downstairs both overlook the port - beautiful. Desenzano well-placed for trains (15 min walk),ferries (3 mins) and buses (4 mins). There was nothing not to like.

Room Tip: Go for larger rear rooms rather than smaller front rooms with the view.

In Desenzano you simply cannot beat the Piroscafo's central location and outlook onto the Old Harbour.

Lets first get any possible negatives out of the way - they didn't concern us but may others. Yes, the shower is small (I weigh 16 stone and if I can get in/out then most can). The rooms can be a bit small (ours was about half the size of our bedroom at home, but not claustrophobic). They don't have a Card Room Entry System (you have to remember to lock your door when leaving). The Wardrobe/Drawer space if travelling with (as I was) the Fashion Police is a bit limited. And for reasons I never discovered the hallway light switch on 2nd Floor didn't always turn the lights on (yes, I was sober). If you're travelling with Inghams and looking at the half board option (we didn't) then the Gattolardo (translation - Greasy Cat?) isn't in the most attractive location - don't know what the foods like as we didn't eat there. Finally - if offered the Venice Excursion, take the early one as the late returns at 00.30 am when the road outside the hotel is closed from 9pm to 6am - which means you are dropped some way off up the Lakeside road. OK we got those out the way, but then this is a 3 Star Hotel - it isn't trying to be the Burj Al Arab in Dubai where we have stayed.

Now the good points (many) - we had Room 10 with a balcony and harbour view - absolutely stunning view. The staff and the Manager/Owner are friendly and are always very helpful. The Hotel is kept spotlessly clean. The Bathroom is a good size with good quality towels changed/provided every day. The Breakfast can be taken outside (sort of on Quayside of the Harbour). Although only 75 yards from the main square and 100 yards from the many restaurants on the other sides of the Harbour the hotel is surprisingly quiet. The Hotel has a terrace on 1st Floor with seating and sun shades for an afternoon respite. There has to be about 40 competitively priced restaurants and Trattoria's within 350 yards, that's not including the Bars. The shops start within a few yards of the Hotel and almost all stay open until 9pm (some 10pm). The Boat Station is only 250 yards away from where you can get to the other major towns of Lake Garda. The other busy (buzzy) towns within reasonable distance are Sirmione, Bardolino and Salo (we haven't stayed in Lazise, but it may be another one).

Give the Piroscafo a go and if your budget runs to a harbour view - you won't be disappointed.

A small hotel, well placed in the town. A few steps from the square and cathedral and lakeside but fairly quiet. Overlooks a small harbour leading into the lake under a bridge. Breakfast is continental only but suited us. No sign of a toaster but the staff are very obliging and we may well have had toast if we had asked. We learned to ask for coffee later during breakfast as it comes in an open jug and cools quickly.Tea is a pot of hot water and you add your tea bag. The rooms are small but spotless. there is a lift and wifi is good in some areas. The first floor rooms share a terrace overlooking the harbour. Single room bed was very narrow. The showers we had in our rooms were very small. about 2 feet square in a corner and enclosed on two sides by a white plastic curtain which wrapped itself around one and had to be peeled off! We mastered it eventually. tea -making facilities, a kettle and cups, were provided in the rooms and tea bags and fresh milk were always available at reception. we enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.

Room Tip: First floor rooms overlooking the harbour have a pleasant terrace.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The ownership and the management of the Hotel Piroscafo by the Segattini family originates at the early part of the last century. At that time transport on the lake was by sailboats which could enter into the harbour. Travellers found accommodation and food in the hostelry known as Locanda Stella. The final renovation of the building was carried out at the start of the 1980's and the business took on the present characteristics, that of an hotel in a central location with a view of the quaint old harbour. It is of particular delight to those visitors who wish to stay in the traditional centre of Desenzano, taking advantage of the comforts that only the centre can offer: proximity to shops, restaurants and bars, the port and the other amenities of a typical small lakeside town. From the terrace on the first floor one has a privileged view of the main square of the town and guests may relax or sun bathe there, taking advantage of the bar service or the shows and concerts organised by the town council in the evenings during summer. The Hotel is equipped with a lift that serves nearly all rooms: only a few rooms need to be accessed by the stairs. The rooms are soberly furnished with modern and linear furnishings, equipped with colour SAT TV, direct telephone line, safe, air conditioning and internet Wi-Fi connection. All rooms are equipped with private bathroom, with shower or bath tube and hairdryer. Some have a small exclusive balcony with view on the harbour or direct access to the communal terrace situated on the first floor, and they could be booked on request. ... more   less
