“Hotel boring. No atmosphere.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

The hotel is clean, the breakfast food fine, but generally the hotel is uninviting, dark really and seems to be unloved. Generally its wants a good redesign and upgrade. The staff all seemed to be quiet and gave the appearance that they all wished to be working somewhere else. Breakfast also wasnt an exciting start. The staff here were attentive but not sociable. The toaster never worked all the time we were there and it may have been better taken away and use just the "forever waiting" one which was the replacement. I gave up in the end. The bar was not used as there was no-one to take the order but if you found the restaurant waiter he could help. Its four star and you dont really expect the shower door to be broken and television programmes limited. I dont wish to be critical of the hotel, but I wouldnt stay there again because I am sure others are better value. Finally, if you dont or cant walk well, this hotel is probably 900 meters from the centre or any activity.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool are pleasant

It was an absolute delight to stay in this lovely hotel in the beautiful resort of Desenzano. The hotel has a slightly old fashioned, genteel and tranquil feel which I found very appealing and relaxing. All the staff were very courteous, helpful and friendly - particularly the restaurant staff who were complete stars in assisting me with my lactose free diet - something of a challenge in Italy! Nevertheless there were always delicious options for me at both breakfast and dinner. I particularly liked the idea of a dedicated table at dinner throughout the holiday. There is a secluded and peaceful pool area - ideal after a day's sightseeing and not always found in hotels in this area. The hotel is on a quiet road on the outskirts of the town but it only takes a gentle 15 minute stroll (mostly by the lake) into Desenzano which is a gem of a resort - not too 'touristy' or crowded with lots of cafe's, restaurants and a good mix of shops. Apparently it's the resort of choice for Italians on Lake Garda which says a lot for its appeal. It's also ideal for getting round the area with ferries and a railway station. Just one slightly negative comment - the hairdryer in the room is very quirky, looks like an attachment to a vacuum cleaner, cuts out at regular intervals and takes forever to dry your hair - simple solution is to take your own. But I still adored my time at the Oliveto and in Desenzano - a wonderful and uplifting experience in a glorious area.

Would rate this hotel excellent....avoid bedroom with car parking light above balcony.....bugs a plenty! We were moved to super room when requested. Breakfast and dinner fabulous and waiting staff absolutely great. Only complaint on 3 occasions when we had an early start to go on tours had to shower in cold water.....apparently hot water not available till after 6.30 a.m.!!!! Pleasant 15 minute walk to town which is very pretty, lots of little side streets, designer shops and numerous other varied gift and clothes shops...ferries so convenient and lots of very good restaurants and lakeside cafes to choose from. Would love to return to Hotel Oliveto when hopefully hot water will be available 24 hours a day!

Room Tip: Avoid bedroom with car park light above balcony...third floor!

A very Mixed Review, Desenzano is a beautiful resort, but holiday was let down by the hotel .
With a little imagination, this hotel could be made a lot better.
The vast reception lobby is sadly under used.
The bar is not manned and has no atmosphere and no music and has all the ambience of a dentist waiting room.
We stayed on the third floor and had the third bed for our ten year old Son.
We paid extra for a balcony but it was tiny and only two chairs and not even room for a third chair, let alone a table.
Consequently, we never used it.
The beds were very firm and both my wife and I woke up with back pain on the first morning, so not a great start.
We asked for an extra mattress to put on top, the thin single type that are placed on top of the chair that converts into the third bed.
Every room had that chair that converted into a third bed, but according to the manager, it was "not possible" to get us this extra mattress we so desperately needed to get a good nights sleep.
We found out from the receptionist that the hotel was just half full so we could have easily borrowed a thin sofa bed mattress from another room.
We bought if up with our Holiday Rep, Frederica, who was very nice but was unable to get any further than we did with the Manager.
What a shame, if you don't sleep well and wake up with back pain, its not really a Holiday, is it!

The Manager, Daniele Maruti, whom we later found out was the owner, had the personality of a Plane Crash.
He was rude to his reception staff and we never, EVER saw him crack a smile the whole time we were there!
A receptionist did apologise for his attitude on the first day of our stay.
He did manage a couple of "Buon giorno" to us, but only in front of his staff!

On a couple of evening meal seatings, he sat on the Dining table next to us with his Daughter who was around our sons age??
There was never any acknowledgement or even a "Buona sera" a thoroughly miserable individual!
We Honestly felt like we intruding into his dining room in his own home, as unwelcome guests, it really was that bad!
The Dining Room waiters were very attentive, no problems here.
Pool Area nice and clean and quiet, would stay in Desenzano again, but never at the Oliveto again!

I cannot understand why or how anyone would find anything negative to say about this hotel especially when one compares prices. Excellant staff only too willing to help, Spotless and well maintained hotel, well maintained and quiet pool (how many hotel have one at all), Spotless and large room overlooking the lake. Good quality continental breakfast with wonderful attentive waiters, Reception staff who gave helpful advice. Hotel well-placed, a 15 minute walk along a tree lined , well lit, well paved road alongside the lake. We will be back and would highly recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Go for lake view, or pool view

We spent a week at oliveto through crystal holidays. The whole experience was good agreat pool area, bed rooms were of a gret size 312 looks over the lake brillant view. The breakfast was self service with the usual varietes. Fruit, cerial, yougharts, make your own toast and lovely plum cake a real treat. It would be a10mins walk into desenzano. The reception staff are very friendly and restaurant waiters, nothing is a problem to them, and all areas very clean. In all a nice traditional italian hotel.

Room Tip: 3rd floor front are lake views

Aircon in the common areas? We certainly didn't notice a problem as we strolled through the very large reception area. As for aircon in the room ours worked fine, if you had a problem why not just complain? I suspect they would have moved you or fixed it. Dated, well maybe, but it was spotlessly clean and recently decorated so I suspect it was a "classic" Italian style hotel.

It is a bit pricey but then we were there in August and it is slap bang in the middle of a major tourist area.

Our room was large, well equipped and had a lake view.

The pool was excellent.

The breakfast was perfectly adequate, good food, wide range and good service.

I would certainly happily recommend it.
