“The Best of The Best in Tuscany!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

Where do I begin? I will start with our host, Marinella. She is absolutely wonderful. She and her staff and the kindest and most caring people I've met in all of my visits to Italy.

And the agriturismo is stunning. The view from the back yard is one of the finest views in all of Tuscany. It's jaw-dropping.

The rooms are very comfortable as well. We had 5 family members travelling together. We stayed in apartments 1 and 3, both ground floor. I have also stayed in apartment 2 on a previous visit in 2009.

Be sure to eat dinner with Marinella every night you are there. The food is out-of-this-world! And if you have the opportunity, sign up for a cooking class with her! Included with the class is a Podere San Lorenzo apron and a copy of Marinella's cookbook. My favorite dish - spaghetti carbonara! She really knows how to cook it better than anyone!

If you are into wine tasting, Marinella has some friends on the other side of Volterra that will treat you well and will be happy to package and deliver any wine you decide to buy.

As you can see, nearly every review is 5-star. Anyone who rates this place low is the one with a problem, not the agriturismo. You will not find a better and more hospitable place!

Room Tip: Want a helpful tip? Go with apartment #1. It comes with a private terraces with amazing sweeping vie...

We had four fantastic nights here on our third consecutive year visiting Tuscany.

With flights booked in to Pisa, I embarked on extensive internet research to find the perfect place to stay in the Volterra/San Gimignano region of Tuscany. I found this place among others on the search engine but something just kept bringing me back to their website, so I contacted Marinella by email. After much excellent correspondence, we were booked in and booked on a cookery class!

On arrival, we found the location perfect for visiting Volterra and the surrounding area easily, whilst still being in a peaceful, relaxing, countryside location. We were greeted by helpful Simone (and beautiful Molly, the house dog) and were shown to our second floor apartment (with fantastic view over the garden/pool area) which was spacious and clean with adequate facilities.

I was a little wary of the pool at first due to the pond-like nature, but it is fresh and feels so much healthier than a chemical pool. I loved the wildlife and nature it attracted - beautiful dragonflies and frogs! Another bonus in the garden was the table tennis set-up - we loved to break up the day's relaxation with a bit of a competition!

We took the cookery class on our second day, along with another couple and hosted by Marianna. At the start we were informed we would be cooking for over 20 people so there was lots of pressure! Marianna made it fun, informative and worth every penny of the 90 euros per person - the souvenir apron and recipe book are excellent. There was a fabulous atmosphere in the restaurant when we sat to eat - the food, wine and water were all included in the cookery class price. Having befriended a lovely couple with a baby son, we ate in the restaurant again with them two nights later and for 28 euros each had a fabulous meal with wine.

Only a couple of small things to note which may bother others: the shower temperature was a little temperamental (which you would expect from a big house with lots of bathrooms!) and there is no air conditioning (but a fan in the room we stayed in made it bearable).

Overall a lovely, relaxing place with a homely feel but not for you if your idea of a holiday is somewhere with TV/stereo, noise and nightlife!

San Lorenzo is merely 3 km from Volterra, the nearest town. We arrived from Florence (after changing the bus as Colle di Valle d'Elsa) and Marinella, the hostess, came to pick us up at the bus station. The agriturismo is run by Marinella & her husband – along with a small support staff, not to mention Molly their super-friendly dog. The family lives on the lower floor and rents out rooms and apartments.

Our room was at the very top, on the second floor, with a great view of a little hill and the verdant surrounding areas. A large olive grove surrounds the villa and olive oil is available for sale as well. The entire villa has been built around a 12th century chapel, which is now the dining room where they offer cooking classes. I took one class the day we arrived and, along with a Canadian couple, made a delicious meal under the guidance of Mariana the chef. The cooking class is absolutely worth the price you pay since you learn great recipes, not to mention various skills. Dinner is included & you also get a recipe book & apron as souvenirs. It's a great way to really experience Tuscany.

The next day Marinella drove us to Volterra, which is a really pretty medieval town - so much better than the touristy San Gimignano. It was a wrench to leave the place but it’s definitely a place that we would like to return to – Volterra needs more exploration and San Lorenzo seems like a home away from home! A presto, Toscana...

Room Tip: All rooms have their unique charms, but our room on the top floor had the best view over the Tuscan...

We are a couple (age 32/33) from switzerland and enjoyed our stay very much. Our expectations were fully met: eating good toscan (local) food, chilling at the (organic!) pool, sunbathing on a nicely cared loan next to olive trees, near to volterra, very quite location where you can listen to the frogs in the pool :). The price for, we guess, the smallest room with 98 euro is accaptable. The staff was very friendly. Unfortunately we could only stay one night. If you like toskany, their poeple, their food?, house that have been built in the 12 century and are not a snob, wanting a 5 star hotel, then just go there :)

It was a must to return to our "home" in Volterra when we planned our since trip to Italy. Our visit with Marinella and her staff was even better than the first time.

This is an historic site of a twelfth century monastery only a five minute to Volterra. Those reviewers who complain about the lack of luxury accommodations are not looking for a true Italian experience.

As for the reviewer who said they had to wash their bedding and clean for the next guests must have been reviewing another place. Never happened, not even close. Been there twice and that is just not true.

In fact when my brother asked to use the washer for a small fee, they unloaded the washer since he wasn't there when it quit, they hung his laundry on the line and when it started to rain, they grabbed up his clothes and hung them inside. They even folded them and brought them to him and refused a tip he was insisting Gabriele take.

The cooking class was the highlight. As was an impromptu afternoon discussion with the owner, Marinella. Listening to her life story was fascinating.

All the staff are friendly and the evening meals were very reasonable given they were the freshest and best in all of Italy.

The view from the back patio is gorgeous.

We extended our stay to four nights this time and it still wasn't enough. Next time I want to stay a week and just enjoy feeling at home among the olive trees and my "adopted Italian family". It was heartbreaking to leave.

If you want to feel and taste Italy as it really is, this is the place to stay. If you are a snooty tourist who insists on staying in another boring luxury hotel, stay away. This isn't the Ritz Carlton, thank God.

My partner and I stayed at Podere San Lorenzo for one week at the end of June. It had been recommended to us by some friends and found it to be everything they described and more.

Upon arrival we were awestruck. The beautifully restored former Tuscan chapel sits in the most picturesque setting, surrounded by an olive grove, rose bushes, bio-pool and the quintessentially Tuscan Cypress trees.

Our room was homely and comfortable with a wonderful view overlooking the Tuscan hills.

Marinella and her team were truly hospitable and by the end of our stay we felt more like one of the family than mere guests. - From Simona's bright and cheery welcome upon arrival, to Marinella's advice on the local areas and stories of the history of Podere San Lorenzo, to Gabriele's attentiveness & charm (not to mention his fantastic cappuccinos!)

The dinners served in the main chapel building weren't only the best we had tasted during our stay in Italy, but some of the best food we have tasted. Ever. Fresh, authentic and delicious.

In short, should you wish to visit an authentic Tuscan villa, in the most beautiful surroundings, with the privacy of self-catering, but the benefits of having breakfast provided for you, delicious dinners cooked for you and warm, welcoming people on hand to answer any questions, or to just have a lovely chat with - you MUST visit.

I cannot recommend this wonderful Agriturismo more highly, and we cannot wait to go back.

We had such a good time here. The views were breathtaking, the rooms were private and comfortable, and the staff were fun, friendly, and very efficient. We especially enjoyed the cooking classes with Mariana. Marinella (the owner) and Simona gave wonderful help and advice and Gabriel knew what we wanted before we did. The location, too, is perfect -- we were literally 5 minutes from Volterra where we could whip in for a pizza, the farmer's market, shopping or the Etruscan Museum. A good base for day trips further afield, too. The setting of the pool is beautiful, complete with reeds and (very noisy) bullfrogs! Wouldn't change a thing; it's just perfect.
