“Perfect place to base a Tuscany visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2011

My wife spent 6 nights in Tuscany, and 2 here but wish we had stayed for all 6.
The setting was perfect. Volterra was one of our favorite hill-towns, and being a working farm, there is plenty of room to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside and have a dip in the pool at Podere San Lorenzo.
Some other reviewers suggest the lack of A/C can be an issue - it was not for us (perhaps because of the time of year). The towels were not changed daily, but we didn't mind and the satff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Francesca, who managed the dining room and meals which were marvelous. We chatted with other guests, and all were very pleased with their choice of lodging.
San Lorenzo is not a HOTEL, but if you are looking for a true Tuscan experience, it would be extremely hard to beat. We highly recommend it.

We stayed four nights in Apt 6, which is detached from the farmhouse, and next to the entrance road, but is very pleasant. Large windows open to the view of hills and to the sunrise every morning, which was always stunning while we were there. The location of San Lorenzo is perfect, close to Volterra and surrounded by farms and beautiful hills. Volterra is a fun town to explore with ruins and a great Etruscan museum. All the meals we had in town were delicious. We ate dinner at the farmhouse two nights, which was also delicious and fun. I did the cooking class one afternoon and loved it. The staff were all very nice and helpful at all times. We spent the morning hours exploring nearby towns, before the hoards of tourists arrived, then came back to the farm around noon or one and had picnics by the pool. The pool was great for relaxing by, or swimming, which my husband enjoyed but I wasn't in the mood for, I guess. Overall, this is a fine place to stay, as long as you are expecting a farm stay and not a fancy hotel. We truly enjoyed our time here.

Wow! This place is absolutely amazing!

We stayed here for three days and our only regret is not staying longer. The accommodation is charming. It use to be a stone church and they built the apartments around it. Each room has a private balcony or terrace that over looks the Tuscan hills. We stayed in apartment 4 and and had our own balcony. The two rooms below us terrace's were as private but enjoyed the sun and more of a view. Tuscany also is quite 'breezy,' so the fact that there was no air con was not a problem at all.

If you stay you must eat dinner in the church. Each night they offer a four course meal cooked with the vegetables from their own vegie patch - each night was something different and amazing!

The grounds are surrounded by farmland, so there is a very nice walk you can do through the country side. It is hard to walk into town as the streets are very narrow and winding and quite dangerous to walk on.

The service is relaxed, but very good. We did our washing here and they even let us use their personal laptops to check our next accommodation. Every need was met.

If you're looking for a relaxing holiday this is the place to go. It was our favourite place in all of Italy (and also the cheapest!). We look forward to returning in the future.

Charming Agriturismo in the middle of the hills near Volterra. The location, gardens, natural swimming pool and the old beautiful building made for a very enjoyable and unique stay in the region. Very nice staff. Only negative is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms.

This was our second year in Podere San Lorenzo and it was better than the first if that is possible. The staff are so friendly and accomodating, neither myself or my Aunt drive when we are in Italy and Marinella, Francesca or Simone dropped us into Volterra if we wanted to go and collected us. Anything we asked for was not a problem. If we needed information about travelling around they were so helpful. The food in the restraunt (old chapel) was exquisite and €28 for five courses and wine and grappa is very reasonable. We also took part in the Cookery lesson which was fantastic, the lesson lasts three hours and is hands on we enjoyed every minute. We attended the Andrea Bocelli Concert and Marinella organised the transport to and from the concert for us, i am just sad that it is Andrea Bocelli's last year as he is amazing and it is such an experience to see him in his home town. Marinella, Francesca, Simone & Tina are beautiful and do anything to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. I am looking forward to next year.

We stayed three nights at Marinella's Podere with our two children. It was extremely hot (over 35 derees every day) and our up-stairs two room flat did not contribute to our comfort. The flat or apartment should be fine in spring or autumn but it is too hot in summer (no aircon) and it is too small for a family. Between 11am and 7pm we could not be inside, we had to either be next to the swimming pool or sightseeing. The children's bed was also a make-shift bed, too hard to get any rest.

Maybe it was just bad luck but during our stay there were two other families with (many) small children. While it is a pretty place I would not recommend it for families with older children and also not for romantic holidays. Families with small kids or older couples can consider the farm. The website is not very informative and for that reason potential visitors put a lot of trust in the Tripadvisor Reports. I would therefor like to be vary frank and not recommend this as a holiday destination.
1. It is expensive - we paid 158 Euro a night for the tIny two room apartment.
2. The rooms are hot and have very low ceilings
3. The outside lights are on until 1pm, and shines right into the window which, of course, can not be closed as a result of the heat.
4. Marinella and her staff were very rude when we had to leave two days early and refused to refund one of the two nights. Her husband joined her in screaming at us.
5. You have to take everything with, from the garbage bags to the washing liquid to the toilet paper, and there is absolutely no service. You have to clean and wash and make your own beds and they ask that you leave everything in a perfect condision for the next guest!
We stayed in three different Podere's and Agrotourism places during June and July 2010 and San Lorenzo was both most expensive and the worst experience. I would certainly be willing to discuss this review in more detail if anyone wants to send me a direct email.

We booked this agriturismo mainly based on the few reviews here on tripadvisor and I would say that the place exceeded our high expectations! Built around an old chapel from the 12th century, this is both an olive tree farm and an agriturismo with several apartments. We had one with a private patio (together with the neighbouring apartment) towards the valley and a nice mountain view. The apartment was very clean and in good condition. The owner and her staff are always there when you need and are exceptionally friendly and welcoming. You can have dinner with the other guests in the former chapel, and the food is just amazing - simple Tuscan meals but made so well that few restaurants can match. The dinner costs 28€ per person and includes a bottle of wine and a 4-course meal, incl. coffee and grappa afetrwards. The location is very conveniently few kilometres from Volterra. I would absolutely recommend Podere San Lorenzo if you want a nice, peaceful place to spend some time just relaxing and reading books or you want a place to stay while making day-trips around Tuscany (like we did). The mobile phone signal is a bit weak so your phone may not be all the time online. The only regret is that as a lover of italian food and wine I would have liked to have the opportunity to select different wines for dinner, even at additional cost. The wine offered is basic table wine, but hey, we are right next to Chianti Classico area...!
