“Second visit would go a third!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

I love Tuscany but would go again later in the year rather than peak season! When I first visited Volterra it was November and a sleepy little town which I fell in love with, this time it was hustle bustle of peak season so a lot different! It was still pleasant and made accessible to other towns to visit. As for Hotel La Locanda the staff are friendly and the hotel is perfectly located within walking distance to free parking. The room we stayed in was much grander than those elsewhere, was clean and we chose it for the whirlpool bath which made for a pleasant soak. Only downside to this hotel was our towel rail did not work and that due to the busy season the road could be a tad noisy. Also the hotel could not provide an iron and ironing board so we had to purchase a travel iron in the town which was a bit of a let down. On a whole I would visit again because I love the location and would stay here again because the staff and room are wonderful. I would recommend learning some key phrases whilst visiting Volterra because a lot of the locals do not speak very fluent English however that said I personally try to learn a few key phrases anywhere to show 'willing'!

Stayed here for three nights during a recent break to see Andrea Bocelli in Lajatico. La Locanda is cosy, nothing overly fancy, but had a great large shower and bathroom area, wifi isn't powerful so do your research before you go, staff did all they could to help, even preparing a picnic breakfast as we were leaving at 5am on our last day. Room was spotless and towels changed each day, breakfast a good choice of cereals, teas, coffees etc, boiled eggs, fruit, plenty for anybody. its in a perfect spot just inside the city walls, no parking at the premises itself, there is a pay and display just about 2 mins away, costing 18euros a day, and another free car park, about 5 mins walk. Volterra is a beautiful area to discover, and although there were plenty of tourists there during our time, i felt totally safe going around sightseeing and browsing alone whilst hubby rested from the sun, many locals speak some English, which helps those who haven't got their phrase book. the restaurant linked to hotel locanda in the main square filled a stop gap on our first night, but there are many other wonderful eateries. Off the beaten track, about an hours car drive from Pisa on a direct, but very windy, road. Hotel is worth a return visit.

Room Tip: We got room 306, on the top floor and lovely and quiet with great views of the stretching distance a...

I rather liked this old hotel. Our room was HUGE but had multiple steps which is a bit dangerous in the middle of the night. I did not care about the wi-fi (many folks spent a great deal of time frustrated by this, which made me happy we decided to completely "unplug" and actually experience a vacation!). The lobby was sort of small but we didn't really spend much time there. The breakfast was pretty awful. Prepackaged cookie-type things, no fruit or cereal to speak of, the rolls were only sweets and a bit stale. Coffee was fair. We made up for it by having some wonderful meals in town. This hotel IS very quiet...if you have trouble sleeping, this is a good spot. It's right in town, yet off down a narrow street away from the hubbub at night. Front desk staff was very nice.

This hotel was more luxurious than we're accustomed to. Nicest bathroom ever. The wi-fi stunk - very slow when it was up and running, which was a rarity. The hot water heater was not functioning during our first night, repaired the following day. The air conditioning was weak - cool enough for us, but probably not cool enough for some folks.

We stayed in this hotel as part of our hiking tour of Tuscany. Volterra is a great place to stay and the hotel Locanda is right in the heart of the village. Our room was a good size with beautiful windows opening onto the street. Our bathroom was a little odd. There was a heavy door(almost like a fire door) connecting our bedroom to a short hallway. At the end of the hallway was a step up, another heavy door, and then the bathroom. These steps and heavy doors made it a challenge to use the bathroom in the middle of the night! We had a bathtub with a handheld shower. (Women beware... It's hard to get shampoo and conditioner out of your hair without a real showerhead!). The bathroom was spacious but could have used a really good cleaning. We were not bothered by street noise. However, we did have trouble getting the AC to work. My husband finally figured out to stick a pen into the thermostat, wiggle it around, and got it working. Our one complaint was the breakfast. The cappuccinio was not very good and that was disappointing. The did put out a tray of salami and cheese, some fruits (that weren't ripe), and stale cereal. The pastries were just OK. I think this is something they should try to improve. Other than that, I did like the hotel and would recommend it.

Dear Jennifer B,
Thank you very much for your review. We are sorry for the "heavy doors" of your room and for the bad cappuccino! You must come once (or twice!) more, so we can remedy!

Our hiking/walking trip to Italy included a two-night stay in Volterra at this hotel. It was a perfect choice, both the city and the hotel. We especially appreciated that Volterra is "less-traveled" meaning that it was NOT loaded with tourists, making it ideal for a more authentic Italian experience. There is a lot to see in Volterra, and the city is easy to navigate. Excellent restaurants . . . some of the best meals we had on our trip were here. La Locanda was really a superb place to stay. The staff was incredibly attentive and helpful, and the breakfasts were great. My only suggestion is to request a room in the back (not facing the street), as street noise on active nights (like Saturdays and the days their soccer team wins!) can be loud, making sleep difficult. But our stay there was terrific . . . we'd definitely return.

Room Tip: My only suggestion is to request a room in the back (as noted above) as street noise on active night...

We stayed at the Hotrl La Locanda during our Rick Steve's trip. The room was large and the bathroom the biggest we had in Italy. The room offered two windows that opened to the street below. We were on the third floor.

Overall the hotel was extremely good for an ancient city. This hotel was more than expected and we totally enjoyed our time in Volterra. Great location, the staff was very nice, and the breakfasts were tasty and filling.

The one area of improvement would be there WiFi. We had very little luck connecting to he Internet and finally called it quits. Other than the WiFi, excellent hotel.
