My family party of six was in trouble, having unexpectedly left a horrible rental in Tuscany earlier in the day, with no place to stay. We took a chance and drove to Volterra, and then (using the Rick Steves guide) contacted the Albergo Etruria, where they were kind enough to rent us three rooms at the last minute. Later, after we had fallen in love with the town, they allowed us to extend our stay without problem.
The hotel is not fancy, some of the rooms are small, and the lack of air conditioning was a little uncomfortable given the hot weather we were experiencing. However, all of this was made up for by the overall warm hospitality of the managers and their staff. The rooms were otherwise comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. There is a lovely dining room where a very nice breakfast is served (included in the rate) each morning; my wife, a strict coffee snob, gave the cappuccino two thumbs up! There is a common area on the first floor that has a refrigerator, stove, and microwave for use by the guests, as well as a computer and TV. Best of all, there is a rooftop garden area that is both expansive and beautiful.
Really, though, the staff makes the experience! They were all helpful to a fault, whether printing up our train e-tickets, giving us six Wi-fi passwords every day for our use, or dealing with pretty much any other request we made.
And the price on the rooms is extremely reasonable.
Room Tip: Just ask; they will be happy to help you pick the right room!
