Duke Vicino Orsini obviously had an interesting view of the world, looking down from the imposing castle up the hill, he ordered the Parco dei Mostri to be built in honour of his dead wives. the mid 16th century saw huge boulders sculpted into distorted monsters, battling giants, crooked houses, misshapen nymhs and even a mausoleum in a gentle wooded hill side.
A wacky day out and it was great to see the awe and joy on our nine year old's face as she spied yet another monstrosity through the trees.
Surprisingly, our best moment was offered by a musical couple that walked into a gigantic open mouth and burst into jazz tinged vocals and excellent flamenco guitar, their output amplified perhaps by design or maybe accident by the cavernous hollows of the monstrosity brought the whole park to life for one magic moment.
Not always the best but certainly worth a visit.
