“Relaxing Sardinian Escape”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2008

My husband and I spent an absolutely wonderful week at Cala Caterina.
The location was absolutely beautiful. Lush gardens, a large pool and direct access to a secluded beach. It was the most perfect place to relax and unwind.
The food and and choice of drink was superb - everything was incredibly fresh and if there was anything on the menu that we didn't want or like, the staff was more than happy to change it for us.
Yes, at times the service was slow, but the staff was always friendly, courteous and happy to chat.
Many of the guests had children and the staff was always charming and attentive to the little ones needs also.
A absolute perfect holiday - we will be returning!

Cala Caterin is a nice hotel, but it's not worth 4 stars (and the money).

Staff is not the friendliest nor the quickest.
Our room was ok, but not 4 Star either.

Restaurant/Bar staff was lousy. Waited for hours to get our orders. Most of the times they forgot to bring something.

We had a car and enjoyed the places around the area. That was good. If we did not have that, this review would have been worse.

My husband and I stayed for five nights in early June. Sardinia is windy but this was one of our reasons for chosing to go there. We did however, pay for the fairly expensive Cala Caterina because it had "air-conditioning". Bad decision. What it has is not what I would call air-conditioning. We were given a different room to try and it was cooler but the room was nowhere near as nice as the superior room we had paid for so we were reluctant to change.

On the subject of service we have to agree that this was bad. One night we sat for nearly half an hour at our table for dinner until we asked to be served. Often, we sat for 10 minutes in the deserted bar before someone came to offer us a menu. We began to think that the explanation was simply a different pace of life, until we noticed that the standard and speed of service seemed to vary according to nationality. Italians first, followed by other Europeans then Brits. We watched an elderly Italian couple recieve personal atttention throughout lunch and dinner on several days by the head waiter and another waitress, whilst we (and another English couple) sat waiting to be noticed.

Otherwise, the hotel was lovely, the gardens beautiful and the food good. But not enough to entice us back.

This could be a great hotel. The buildings and gardens are very nice and the location is great as it is within walking distance of several nice beaches. From our first day however the staff were unhelpful - to start with the hotel beach was covered in jellyfish due to the winds and we asked if there were any other beaches within walking distance that were more protected from the winds. The receptionist told us that it was windy everywhere on the island, that there were jellyfish everywhere and that we would need a car to go to other beaches. All of this was rubbish as there was a lovely beach just a 10 minute walk away with no jellyfish and sheltered from the wind.

Then there is the food - a nightly 5 course 'taster menu' that is little more than a selection of h'orderves that you might find as taster dishes in your local supermarket. I must admit that other people in the hotel seemed to be impressed by this, but I think that anyone who is used to dining out will find it very disappointing. Also the service was terrible - one night our waitress left us half way through the meal for half an hour to go and watch the football in the bar. The lunches were good however as they stuck to simple things like pasta and fish which were done well.

We also had problems that you would expect more from a 50 euro a night hotel like a constantly blocked shower drain that flooded the bathroom every day and was never fixed. At over 300 euros a night I am sure that there must be better hotels on the island in this price range. If they improved their service and food it might be worth it.

I felt I had to write to put an alternative view to this. we spent a fantastic week in Cala Caterina in 2006 with our kids (then 4 and 10) in May and don't agree that it's not family friendly. The staff were extremely attentive and couldn't have been nicer. My daughter loved dancing to the music of the pianist and still speaks of the piano man almost two years later! The food was brilliant for the kids as they could try completely new things and, if they didn't like one thing, there was always something they did like.
We frequently had the pool to ourselves although there was a problem with the beach in that an invasion of jelly fish meant we couldn't go in the sea. We had rooms at the back and, if visiting again, I would opt for paying more to have a view of the sea/garden. Maybe not for a family who want activities laid on but perfect for the rest of us. We barely used the hire car apart from visiting some nuraghi and the nearest town as we enjoyed relaxing at the hotel so much.

This is an excellent hotel in a delightful setting. It has its own private beach and the clearest water so sea swimming is a delight. The staff are attentive and the food varied and interesting. We spent a week there and enjoyed every minute. I will post some photos when I have downloaded them, especially the spectacular sunsets from the headland behind the hotel

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2007

We have just returned from our second stay at Cala Caterina. It suits us as it is a great place to go just to relax. It would not suit families or those seeking active holidays as it is off the beaten track and there are no organised activities. The majority of guests are middle-aged or beyond! Last year most guests were Italian with several couples from Germany, Holland, France and England too. The same week this year, the vast majority of guests were German plus a few Italians. We were the only English couple and there was one French couple.

The hotel is small and beautiful with a lovely warm pool that you often have to yourself. The gardens are large and well kept, and it is a very pleasant stroll through these that leads to a small sandy bay which is almost solely occupied by hotel guests. There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool, dotted among the gardens and on the beach, which are free to guests along with fluffy white towels. There are 2 attendants who are only too pleased to help guests. There is a fresh water shower by the beach.

This year we took a superior room with seaview which was well worth the extra and the air conditioning was much improved. The rooms now have sky TV with lots of channels including BBC World and Sky News, plus there is a facility to receive many (e.g. Sky Sports, Discovery) in English. The hotel also has introduced a wireless internet connection in reception for guest use on purchase of a card. It is expensive though at approx. 16 euros for an hour.

Other reviewers have criticised the food and it is true that Cala Caterina includes dinner in all room rates. Breakfast is a buffet affair that includes a wide selection of cereals, juices, breads, meats, cheeses, eggs (hardboiled and scrambled), fruits, cakes etc. It is of quite a high quality and plentiful. Lunch is not included but is served beside the pool, and there is a good a la carte selection of salads and grilled dishes.

Dinner is slightly more unusual as it is almost a daily tasting menu and I can see that you could love it or hate it. The menu appears to offer 2 or 3 choices each of appetiser, pasta and main course but, in reality, each guest gets them all. They are beautifully presented in tiny portions together on the same plate. The quality is generally very good but can be variable, the dessert buffet is worst but fresh fruit is a safe option! There is a heavy fish bias which wouldn't suit everyone. Twice weekly there was a barbecued main course. This all said, the helpful staff ask each guest before commencing service whether the menu suits them and are happy to present alternatives to please. They appeared to cater well for vegetarians and fish haters. We enjoyed some quite good wines which average around 35 euros per bottle.

Each evening there is some kind of live music in the bar area but the vast majority of guests seemed to disappear after dinner, or after a quick coffee, so the hotel is anything but lively then. We love this hotel and will return but can see that it is not for everyone.
