“Very nice weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

I stayed in this hotel for a long weekend in June 2014. The staff was very friendly, I was given a spacious room, very clean, big balcony, simple furniture, nice bathroom, I had good food, traditional local cheese and fresh vegetables especially since I am veg. I used the facilities at the beautiful Campus beach and had the rest I was expecting by my stay. There were many foreign tourists in the hotel and the desk staff spoke English with no problem at all. I did not find the price unbalanced vs what I got, as I read in other reviews.

Room Tip: There are rooms over the pool which are noisy, to sleep better ask to stay a bit more far away

I am accustomed to this type of hotel: (often) spacious rooms furnished with basic, cheap pieces in a not particularly appealing location not far from the sea. These structures are normally max 3 stars with no pretence and cost up to 100 eur/night.

What's wrong with zagare is that they sport 4 stars (not clear how they were achieved and if they're real at all) and they are expensive (140 eur/night). Had I been told to be in villasimius I had to spend 140 for a 3 star, or even a b&b, I would have probably done it, however this place creates an expectation it's not bound to live up to.

Fake stars a part, the place lets you down on so many levels that it's simpler to list them:

- Hours. Breakfast is served from 7 until 9 45, the 45 is quite funny in a way, they couldn't really keep it on until 10! Definitely this is not following the trend I had started to notice around breakfast times in Europe, where it's normally until 10 30 when it's not until 11 or after. I appreciate this is a place mostly for families, and kids wake up early, this doesn't mean we all have to wake up with them! Btw if you feel like taking the half board formula (not sure why you would with so many restaurants to choose from) bear in mind dinner is served until 9 pm only

- Food. After waking up the 1st morning for breakfast we decided it was not worth the early rise, not even to sneak downstairs and then back to bed again. The buffet looks appealing from afar, but when you get near you realise nothing is fresh here a part for the fruit (which to be fair is good and present in abundance). Cakes and croissants clearly come from an industrial process, cheese and cooked meats from the cheapest shelf of the discount supermarket. There is no hot food buffet, understandable for a 7am breakfast, unless you think someone may come home (rather than wake up) at that time. Cherry on the cake, they charge you separately if you want coffee from the bar rather than from their coffee machine, even if you drink decaf and the machine doesn't have any decaf option

- Reception. The counter is rarely manned, something you would not expect from a 4 star. When there, the staff tries its best but clearly there is no training in the background (again, not a 4 star). On arrival we got a map with the beaches, had to insist to be given indications of the nicest / serviced beaches. They probably assumed we would want to just use their shuttle and go to their beach (which we never tried) and spend money at their beach bar.

- Entertainment. I hate these things, I find quite cheap and somehow annoying having a singer during dinner (unless he's a pro with his own songs), but that's just me I guess and I noticed much better hotels had the same. The hotel also sports an enterntainment team, we never tried them but can confirm they aren't noisy, at least in the morning

- Structure. Upon arrival we just passed the structure assuming that could NOT be our 4 star but a cheaper hotel on the same street. The complex is made of a 2-storey main body, where our room was, and other sort of detached units which I presume are the residence units. The feeling is just of a painted mass of cement with no shape or taste. It's all squared, yellow and green, simply not very pleasant to look at, not a boutique but not a big complex either, makes me think of a motel in a way

- Space distribution. As mentioned, the rooms are big and sport very big terraces. With the right style of furniture they could be very pleasant0(funnily enough we discovered that our room had just been refurbished), however bathrooms would need a rethink. Ours was quite spacious and with a window, but sported the smallest shower i've ever seen: my boyfriend could barely get in and close the shower screen, quite funny to watch while he was trying to wash sand away from his feet! Moreover, there is enough space for a second basin, the fact there is only one is a huge let down for a 4 star structure

- Cleaning. The room was cleaned on a daily basis, bedsheets were not changed in the 3 nights we were there, howevere they were spotless upon our arrival. The cleaning ladies were very keen to get on with their job: on the 1st day they tried to get in at 9 (why would you want to stay in your room and not go for breakfast?!) until we opened the door and agreed "5 minutes". Of course they didn't do anything in the more than 30 mins we were downstairs for breakfast and came back again after we had fallen asleep. Needless to say there is no "no disturb" sign available to hang out of the door

- Small print charges. Cherry on the icing, upon check out we were asked to pay 10eur a day for their "club card", which covers all the services we didn't use, namely the beach shuttle and the entertainment (not only it's bothering, you have to pay for it!)

Bottom line: I have checked prices again upon my return, there are a number of 3 star and B&B structures at lower prices that you could go for in Villasimius, I'd reccomend picking one of them

Room Tip: I would definitely not reccomend this place, however if you're staying here the room in the main...

Le Zagare, was discribed as a lovely hotel, close to the Sea, 800 metres in fact.Le Zagare was less than lovely, arrived late Thursday night and was greeted by an irritated looking local at the desk, who didn't have a basic grasp of English. However he knew enough to demand my "Documents" after some confusion I realised I wasn't in Nazi Germany but infact he wanted my Passport, why?? which modern hotel ever demands that you surrender your passports??I was late arriving due to problems at Rome airport, apparently there was food waiting in the room for me, oh dear this boiled down to some fruit and raw meet. Oh did I mention the room, this was skillfully positioned over the kitchen and Restaurant, which was closed when I arrived I might add.The room was very basic, even the worst 3 star hotels in England aren't this basic, dawn was met with a chorus from the clowns moving the furniture downstairs and then a knock on the door from the over zealous cleaning staff, they were met with a polite but firm "Go away" Do not disturb notices seemed to be missing from the rooms. Finally managed to get downstairs, and asked the slightly annoyed receptionist where the beach was, 800 metres I was told turn left the left again, and follow the road. Oh dear I spent the next 1/2 hour "tear %&&ing" around some semi rural back water looking for the #%$% beach. When I finally found it I discovered that they had a very small section of, perhaps the worst end of it, it backed on to a Bog, of stagnant water, it looked like the sand hand been torn up by some joy riding quad bikers. So in summary, there is nothing to do in the in evening, except consume the tinned food from the restaurant and drink at the inadequately staffed bar. The pool is cold and small. Even the TV in the room is small and and doesn't come with any international channels, even the worst hotels in London have Sky!!The staffs lack of knowledge of the surrounding area and poor command of English makes it a place to avoid if your're planning to stay in the Southern Sardinia. I can only hope that this hotel closes down and is flattened by an air strike. To add insult to injury this place aint cheap either!! How it attained its 3 star rating I don't know. Avoid this place like the plague.
