“Nice, but location a problem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2010

We decided on Torre Barbara based on the ratings on Tripadvisor for our one week trip to visit with friends who live in Vico Equense and spend time visiting the many tourist areas of the Amalfi Coast. While the hotel lived up to expectation related to cleanliness, friendly staff, and wonderful views of Vesuvio, the location and transportation options made for a difficult week. The hotel shuttle was virtually non-existent as it only made a few scheduled drop-off and pickups from the local train station about two miles (1.5km) from the hotel. We were given the option to get the local bus outside the hotel, but many times it did not show up at the specified time or at all. Many times, the information provided by the hotel staff was wrong, leaving us stranded either at the train station or out front of the hotel. Had we known that the shuttle was as undependable as it turned out to be, we would have selected a more convenient hotel to get around the area. The hotel staff did try hard to accommodate us, but unfortunately, they could not. We ended up spending $20-25 for each one-way trip by taxi just to get back and forth to Sorrento because we could not get a ride to the train station after 6:30PM or from the train station after 10PM. Who gets back that early when having a dinner reservation in Sorrento at 9PM? And you don't want to be making this long walk on this stretch of mountainous road with speeding cars and vespers with no regard for people walking. The breakfast each morning was fine and the service was friendly and supporting. The internet access in the room was better than expected and quite convenient for me to keep up with office emails while away.

We stayed in Hotel Torre Barbara for one night only on our travels from Puglia (we wanted a hotel that was within an hour's drive from Nalpes airport). First impressions were very good; the hotel was scrupulously clean (and I'm very fussy!), lovely contemporary interior, beautiful traditional italian stone staircase and we were upgraded free of charge to a superior triple room. The rooms were beautifully clean, in a mezzanine (i think it's called) style on 2 levels. We had a garden view, which was very nice, but our friends had a sea view, which was stunning! I would definately recommend paying more for a sea view. The bar area and restaurant had breath taking views of Vesuvius, and the food/wine served was of a high quality. The pool was lovely, albeit quite small, but it more than served a purpose for our party. I only wish we could have spent longer at this hotel. FABULOUS!

This is a wonderful place to stay, a beautiful property with everything you could ask for. We enjoyed fantastic food and wine on the terrace with amazing views over Vesuvius and great sunsets. All of the staff were outstanding, even when we had a problem with our hire car, nothing was too much trouble and they sorted everything out for us so that we didn't have to struggle through the language barrier! We hadn't realised just how hectic Sorrento and the surrounding area is so we were particularly grateful to have this beautiful place to come back to. We found the location meant we actually didn't need to hire a car, it is so easy to get everywhere by bus and/or train. We had a week of being totally spoilt and, although we do not usually return to somewhere we've already been as we always aim to see somewhere new, this hotel will change that - we will definitely go back.

We stayed at Torre Barbara for 10 nights in July and had a lovely holiday. The hotel is set in an 18th century villa with the interiors decorated in a contempory style. It is a little removed from the town of Vico Equense but the views across the Bay of Naples more than compensated. Meals are served on the terrace with a great choice available during the breakfast buffet. We had dinner on three evenings and the quality of the food was excellent. There is a small swimming pool, ideal for cooling off and some afternoons we had the garden and pool to ourselves. We stayed in room 203 which had a fantastic view and also had a terrace that we could sit and enjoy the view.
Torre Barbara is situated on a busy road but the sound proofing and air conditioning in the room eliminated the noise.
We did not hire a car, but used the hotel shuttle bus and public bus(stops outside the hotel) and then connected with the frequent local train from the nearby station to go to Sorrento, Pompeii and Naples. The main road outside the hotel is too busy and dangerous to walk on, but you can leave the hotel and walk up the steep lane at the rear to the village of Montechiaro and enjoy the view down the coast to Sorrento. We ate at a great pizzera in the village.
The manager of the hotel Raefello and her staff were always so helpful and gave us great advice to make our stay so relaxing and enjoyable.

we were lucky and got room 403 which comes with a terrace/balcony over looking vesuvius and the bay. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend to a friend ONLY if they can be assured of either of these rooms. otherwise you have no balcony and possibly no sea view.
Janluca at reception means well but comes accross badly. everytime you go out he asks you where you are going and tries to tell you not to do it that way. I like to wander and make my own mistakes. the rest of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
The location for me was perfect as we had a car. Sorrento is great to visit but too busy and touristy so nice to visit but not to stay in my opinion.
The breakfasts were really poor. all i want at breaky is a coffee, yogurt and cereal. some mornings even this was an effort. best of lucky getting anything more than a coffee if you lie in and roll down for 10.30 breaky.
the traffic is a bit noisy, but it is italy and busy part of the world. plus the rooms are very well sound proofed indeed and the air con works very well in the rooms.
the pool and gardens is a nice spot. the pool is small but perfect for a quick dip. the building and grounds are all very well kept.
The food at dinner time is average. nothing great really, and the waiters are very poor but possibly just under staffed.
Overall though, we had a great stay here and loved the amalfi coast scenery. the people are not that friendly, the traffic is mental, but the food and culture is not to be missed. Pompeii, vesuvius climb, sorrento, capri island, posittano, sunset on mount faito all highlights.

We stayed here in July and what a little gem of a hotel this turned out to be! The staff could not have been more charming and helpful. The family room was a surprise as there is a double bed upstairs and two single beds downstairs which the kids really enjoyed. The hotel has a lovely little garden with a small swimming pool and for a few days of our week we actually had the garden all to ourselves which was a real treat. Even when it got busier everyone was really friendly and spoke about the awesome view of Vesuvius that we enjoyed as we relaxed in the sun. We would definitely return to this hotel and recommend it to all.

As other have said, the staff is extremely helpful. The hotel is a little off the center of Vico and we didn't have a car but they offer a shuttle service and there's a bus stop just outside. We had a 2-stages room with a king size bed and two tweens. Most beautiful view of Vesuvius from the balcony, they even provide a computer with a large tv/monitor and internet connection. In short, an excellent price/quality ratio, not frequent in Italy.
