“Great Location for Carnevale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

Mirage Hotel is just off the main street of Viareggio, two blocks from the central square. We went for carnevale. All the carnevale events were just steps away, but the hotel was quiet. Excellent full buffet breakfast included. Room was great. Staff very helpful. They got me a parking slot across the street.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor and could see the beach from the window. But the window was small. There...

Good price/value balance, very good breakfast buffet with nice -proper- coffee. If you come by car in high season, make sure you make a reservation for paid parking through the very helpful reception.

The Mirage is situated just off the main 'promenade'. English visitors note that you won't be strolling by the sea, exactly, as you might expect - the beach front, in common with most Italian sea side resorts, is privately owned by restaurants etc and you have to go a little way to find the entrance to the 'free' beach. However, you can see what you're missing from the really great roof terrace at the Mirage.
The hotel has rooms over 4 floors, accessed by a lift (elderly should note that the stairs don't have a handrail, so hope the lift doesn't break down!). All areas are accessible without having to negotiate either stairs or steps - a boon in Italy.
My room had a little balcony with chairs. It didn't have an exciting view but was a pleasant place to sit. Note that the balconies don't have a front sea view- a side one at best and I'd guess only from the higher floor, due to the buildings hiding the beach and sea from view. However, the roof terrace more than makes up for it.

The breakfast is a good Italian standard: I didn't get the opportunity to use the restaurant, which is closed on Sundays and Tuesdays, but it has a good local reputation. There are lots and lots of restaurants, bars and pizza places within a couple of minutes' walk.

To reach the hotel from Pisa airport, you can get a train via Pisa Centrale, about 35 mins in total. You COULD walk from the train in Viareggio to the hotel. Personally, I can't so took the taxi, 10 Euros for less than 2km, but that's how it is! THE BUS is a better option. It takes a bit longer, but it goes from the airport and drops you a five minute walk from the hotel. When you get off the bus, go onto the 'prom' - you'll see the shops - turn right and walk a short way. Turn right at the Hotel Bristol and you'll see the Mirage just a short way up the street on the left. I left Viareggio by bus, and it's a really easy walk even with luggage.

The two men who run the hotel have good English, and are very helpful with local information and directions.

I would stay here again and recommend it if you are no longer young and fit!

As a family of 4 on a tight budget we appreciated being able to share a room. The breakfasts were fabulous and the restaurant very good though pricey. We discovered that the restaurants in the back streets were a better option than those on the waterfront. The hotel was well situated for walking to the beach and shops. One often had to park far from the hotel. We would love to return to the Mirage one day.

Conveniently located hotel on side street, within 5 minute walk to the beach. Discount available at the Columbo Guido Beach Club. Although very small, the room was clean and comfortable for sleeping. Balcony had a great view overlooking the Apennines mountains to one side, and the Mediterranean to the other. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was great with a nice view. Elevator is tiny & slow, so took the stairs a lot from the 5th floor. Parking in Viareggio is a bit tricky, but the hotel can arrange a daily parking permit on the street for 6 Euro. After unloading luggage, I parked two streets away in the Piazza D'Azeglio and left the car there for two days without a problem. All in all good value.

My wife and I stayed bed and breakfast at this hotel with our teenage children for a week, having chosen Viareggio for its location relative to Pisa and Florence. The hotel is located close to the beach and the bus station, and many excellent restaurants. The rooms are small but adequate, and there is a passenger lift to all floors. There is a good buffet choice at breakfast , and this is taken on the roof except in windy conditions. The roof breakfast location offers a lovely choice of views of the sea or mountains. Viareggio is very clean and select and there are no ruffians hanging around, but as with other Italian resorts it can be expensive to take the family on to the beach for the day. The bus station is only two hundred yards from the hotel, and has fair priced regular services to Pisa and Florence. The hotel location also allows the savvy traveller to avoid the £80 taxi fare from the airport, though this is probably a safer plan on the inward journey.

Small hotel up side street, very close to sea front in Viareggio. Room was very basic but clean. Bed was hard as a rock, which they told me was because it was a new mattress. Balcony gave views up street to mountains and sea. Buffet breakfast was excellent. No hurry to return to Viareggio though. Sea front, crowded at weekends when Italians descend on the place. Nothing to do apart from go on the beach (if you can find space to sit down) and look at shops on the front.

  • Liked — Buffet breakfast
  • Disliked — hard bed, room and hotel facilities too basic
