“Fantastic location by the Lungomare”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

Hotel Massimo is in a fantastic location in Viareggio--just steps from the main Lungomare that runs along the ocean. If you haven't visited Viareggio before, that is the area where you'll be spending most of your time, so it's perfect. The accommodations were good--a standard, clean room with an ample-sized bathroom and free wifi (a big plus). Breakfast could be better, but there are enough choices to make everyone happy (croissants, yogurt, various tarts, and cereal). The staff, while standoffish at first, are very helpful and accommodating--you just have to ask! If you're going to Viareggio for Carnevale, know that Hotel Massimo is not in the designated "zone," so you will have to purchase tickets, though you can get them through the hotel for a discounted price (10 Euro). I would definitely stay at Hotel Massimo again because of its great location!

Stayed here for four night and had a good stay in good location, if arriving by car ask the hotel to arrange for a parking pass @ 4 Euro per day well worth it! although plenty of parking spaces around as off season.
Hotel was fine and the only complain is the bathroom which had the shower in the middle of it making everything wet once you took a shower. Breakfast was fin although a chiller cabinet for the cold meats would have been better as the meat sarted to curl up after beeing out for a few hours,
Staff all very friendly and was even left a couple of bottles of Prosseco in our room as a welcome gift. Thank You. Had room with balcony overlooking street which was great to be able to sit out and have a night cap!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2007

This was our 3rd choice hotel and unfortunately we had to resort to it due to the travel agency's agreements (long story). Anyway, the location of the hotel is pretty decent and so was the included breakfast. Other than that, everything was slightly below average. The service was very minimal (aside for the morning waitress) and the room was pretty tiny. The worst part was the shower - it was literally large enough to fit 1 person and it was smack in the center of the bathroom. If you are taking a shower, you are in the middle of the bathroom only separated by a shower curtain, with water everywhere and trying not to bump into the toilet or the sink by accident. The cleaning done each day was very minimal and the maids actually waited on you by your door until you left and were pretty vocal about it. The bed was bad but at least the AC was working and actually had a remote control (most hotels just turn it on in the summer and have the notion of "the colder the better"). If you plan on going out at night, know that you will be given an extra key and will have to crawl into th hotel like a thief if you plan on returning after 12. At 12, everything shuts down and the entire hotel (with mostly elderly residents) goes to sleep! This hotel does not deserve 3 stars and we will not be returning.

Viareggio, for the most part, is where wealthy Italians and foreigners (mostly Germans, Swedes and Brits) got to spend their summer holiday. Most beaches are private and you have to pay for their use but by car, free beaches are within 10-15 min drive. Definitely different atmosphere in comparison with Californian beaches. I think I prefer California.
