“Not a 4* hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

We booked our room well in advance and hotel’s Diamond offer looked like a reasonably priced and a very attractive package. When choosing between Apartment and Junior Suite accommodation, we picked Junior Suite (higher price) because of all extras it was offering, e.g. garage, beach towels, a little present in your room, welcome drink, bikes, beach facilities, Wi-Fi, newspapers, soft drinks. We made it clear in a booking form that parking facilities (garage) were essential for us. We looked at the hotel’s website. It looked very nice, a very impressive building. We read reviews on Tripadvisor. Fantastic! Well, the magic has disappeared the moment we entered the hotel. Marvellous building from outside was not so impressive inside. Small Bar area for the hotel of this size. When we asked about parking, we were told that there was no garage, only parking permit is available. When I showed our offer confirmation, the guy at the reception said it was their last year offer and a garage was not available anymore. I just wonder why nobody notified us by e-mail about any changes? And if there were changes and the package is not what we booked, obviously a price should reflect that too, shouldn’t it? Why nobody read our booking form where it was said that garage is required. If we knew about changes, we would choose a different option or a different hotel altogether. Sadly, the absent of “an offered garage” was not the only surprise. Hotel loses its character completely when you start walking to your room. There is a dormitory feel, hostel rather than a 4* hotel. And then we entered our Junior Suite. It was an apartment: kitchen and a living space. Not a room we had booked. When I went back to the reception and questioned it, the receptionist insisted that it was Junior Suite, Junior Suite has got a “sea view” (it was actually a back yard view with a little bit of sea that you can see between other buildings). I asked for their hotel prospectus. I opened a page with Apartments’ photographs and what a surprise - our room was pictured on that particular page. Receptionist’s answer: “It’s just a picture.” We were not offered a discount or anything else. I was shocked with the staff’s attitude and how they dealt with the whole situation. To add to insult our room was not a room in a 4* hotel: bathroom small and dated, shower is dirty, a missing button on a bed runner (a bed runner disappeared the following morning), a window handle was not fixed properly (loose screws, it came off), patched up painting on the wall, cracks on a wall, mini Bar consisted of 5 soft drink bottles, fridge has not been defrosted for a VERY long time, single beds requested for our children were non-existent, a sofa instead (once again our booking form was not read). I have got photographs to prove every point. We booked half board but at check-in nobody mentioned us about any restaurant arrangements. I wanted to make sure we were booked for an evening meal. Receptionist was not aware about it. That’s where I lost it. You can accept only so many things which are wrong. I did not know what to say. I just wanted to leave that place and we would do it straight away but we were travelling with two young children and had already spent 6 hours driving in the car that day. Fortunately 15 minutes later the receptionist confirmed that evening meal was booked. Restaurant: meal was an average affair, nothing special. What shocked me was breakfast. All breakfast dry/ cupboard stuff is ready for breakfast while guests are still having their evening meal. There are no covers for cereals. Basically everything is left overnight. Fresh fruit? There is a large bowl of “fresh” fruit placed on a shelf, quite difficult to reach. My daughter asked for an apple. When I touched it I could not believe that staff of a 4* hotel still left it in a basket. An apple was very soft and began to crinkle. It definitely was not fresh anymore. There is not a big choice of pastry, just pre packed stuff and cheap cakes. Chair covers and linen in the dining room was a bit tired, yellowish colour of what supposed to be white or at least beige. Area: it is OK. In general we felt that Viareggio is a bit overrated and the sea was far from being crystal clear. We were mis-sold the hotel’s half board package, Hotel is not 4*, apartments and Junior suite is the same type of room (receptionist’s explanations were pathetic). Our advice would be: stay clear of this place, but if you book, choose the cheapest room and you will most certainly get an automatic upgrade (seems to be the hotel’s usual practice). Think about this hotel as a 3* at best and then you probably won’t be disappointed. Even printed e-mail confirmation is proves nothing. Treat it as a guide. Only one member of staff tried to find a compromise and being helpful (Luca? Not sure about spelling. Thank you!). Note to the young girl at the reception: next time you make any happy comments about guests departure, please could you make sure your customer definitely DO NOT understand any Italian and has left hotel. We cancelled our last day of stay (at least something was correct in our booking offer – free cancellation). We paid the full amount, they took two drinks of our total bill, but, hey, what has happened to our Welcome drink, Beach facilities, Beach towels etc. which were all included in our package? We should argue, but we were just happy to leave Hotel Residence Esplanade’s experience behind us!

Hotel very clean, staff friendly. Just returned from three nights. Breakfast was buffet style with everything from croissants, fresh rolls, cereal, yoghurt, plus eggs and bacon. Couldn't fault it. We also ate in the hotel restaurant twice and both evenings the food was delicious. For 35 euro each we had starter of buffet style salad, then a choice of two further mains which I understand is the italian way. I had prawn and courgette spaghetti and it was to die for. This was followed by Turkey escalope then desert. Plus bottle of wine and water. Following evening was pasta and pesto again gorgeous then steak and frittes. Both portions were huge and actually one would have been sufficient but it was a set meal deal. We had planned to eat out on the second evening and went to Cafe 22 near to the clock tower. Avoid this place at all costs. The wine was 28euro and so we orders a glass each. When the food arrived (lasagne) we were given plastic cutlery and when I cut into the lasagne £7 it was cold. We were advised it was microwaved and reheated from lunchtime. We didn't know this when we ordered. I refused to pay for mine due to it being cold and the waitress an oldish lady became abusive in English then italian (could tell by the tone and body language...). The owner listened said little but agreed we only had to pay for the wine and one lasagne even though this hadn't been touched as had no meat in it and was to say the least -disgusting so I was told. We quickly left and headed for our hotel restaurant. There was a couple from the hotel across the road also eating at ours.

Also it was very simple getting a 3euro bus from the airport from outside to Viareggio centre. Our hotel had offered a transfer at 70euro each and then we also found. That a taxi was 65euro each way. You buy the ticket from inside the airport and then on return just near the harbour is a ticket office where you buy the return ticket. The bus service is called Lazzi and is a blue bus. Very simple to use and so cheap.

Oh and you do have to pay for sunbeds and parasols but the beach was immaculate. Beware of the many many jelly fish in the sea.....

And take your credit card the shops along the esplanade were amazing but very expensive, Pravda, Gucci, all designer all gorgeous and very expensive. (No fakes).

Room Tip: Room was very cream, no tea coffee. There was a hair dryer towels gown and slippers plus lovely toil...

We stayed in an apartment in this hotel with our 2 elementary aged children. It was perfect! With access to the beach one way and the large park the other, we had unlimited opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. We paid the daily rate to go to the beach club across the street and enjoyed every minute of it. Entry included pool access and your own umbrella and chair set up on the beach. Note swim caps are required to swim in the pool. The hotel staff was excellent and recommended 8etti, our favorite restaurant in Viareggio. We enjoyed renting bikes in the park and nightly strolls along the beach/boardwalk.

We had to extend our stay in Italy due to our car broke down. We ended booking this great Hotel in the last minute due to the reviews on Tripadvisor.

Despite that we hit the hotel in peak season they managed to get us into an apartment which was comfortable for our family of 5. Especially the staff on this Hotel is great and extremely sweet. They offered us to stay in a flexible time frame since our car kept being delayed. At points they had to mingle a bit with their logistics and even then they managed to exceed our expectations.

That said the breakfast in the hotel could be improved by a little bit more of fresh fruit in trade with all the cakes and danish that were available. Also the chef waiter would be better off if he relaxed a bit - he was rather uptight - not that he bothered us - but he was just such a contrast to the rest of the staff on this Hotel. Even our kids noticed it... maybe he had a bad week.

BUT once again thank you for a great 5 star treatment in a 4 star hotel. A special thanks to the frontdesk that was extremely well run with great people both night and day.

Room Tip: Get off the ground floor

We were en route from the Frech Riviera to Tuscany and needed a comfortable pit-stop midway. Viareggio seemed to be small enough to give easy access and a chance to swim, dine and sleep. This hotel proved to have all we wanted, clean mini appartment with four full-sized beds, across the street from the promenade. There was a kitchenette, but not tempting to do more than keep the rosé chilled in the fridge. For us road-trippers location was convenient with curbside parking in front. Service was friendly and scored an extra point for chasing us after check-out to return a forgotten item. All beaches nearby are private and the hotel had a deal with one of them - we only had a couple of hours of sunlight so we got a special deal for 15 euros for a sunbed, two chairs and an umbrella - the pool would've cost extra. Wouldn't stay here for more than a couple of nights, but in the event I would come back with the same itinerary, I would have a reason to go anywhere else either.

We were a family of three, and stayed here for 3 nights in July. The hotel has an excellent location 50 meters from the long Avenue going all the way along Viareggio’s beach line, and 150 meters from the waterfront. We had a family room which actually was a suite with separate bedroom. They serve excellent breakfast with all kinds of Italian coffee served at your choice. The hotel has a deal with two private beaches nearby. We only tried the Principe di Piemonte beach. It was rather expensive (35 Euros for an umbrella, sunbed, two sun chairs and an ordinary chair). The beach was clean and spacious and we also had access to a pool, restaurant and beach bar. The Hotel also has bikes to let, both city bikes and mountain bikes. We rented city bikes for a day (8 Euro a bike). All bikes have locks and are in good shape. We had a great trip to the fair city of Pietrasanta. It is approximately 11 km away and you can ride on a bike path all the way. We would certainly recommend this hotel if you wish to explore Viareggio.

They had no single rooms and I was offered a family suite at 100e. What a great deal for a super large room, living room, kitchenette and across the street from the promenade, plenty of street parking, a block from the central park
