“Oh What A View!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

I loved this hotel - I could almost go 5! We were there during off season so it was very quite, we chose to stay in Viareggio instead of Florence to get away from the crowds and take the train to in. We had an ocean view balcony room with an amazing view. The hotel is very old but has a certain charm and elegance about it. The room and bathroom are a good size and have every thing you need though nothing fancy. The staff is friendly and the breakfast was incredible, and they kept the cappuccinos coming! The day we arrived it was sunny and warm, on our third night I was awoken in the middle of the night by an extremely load BOOM! It was an awesome thunder and lighting storm over the ocean and found myself sitting on the balcony for at least an hour watching it!

Room Tip: Highly recommend ocean view balcony room!

Dear Guest,
thank you.
I agree with your decision to stay in Viareggio and take train to Florence is very good choice.easy, cheaper and convenient.
Yes, sea view balcony room is one of the must requested, little bit exspensive but is a very good choice to enjoy the wonderful view of the Tirrenian sea!
Hope to welcome you once again
Kind regards

Stayed here with my wife and 2 children (9 and 11) in July 2013. We were given a large room on corner towards the port side of town on third floor. Hotel very clean. Staff friendly. Pool set up was excellent - we had free passes for the beach across the road but my children prefered the pool as did the grown-ups. Table tennis and nice bar at the pool with great staff. We had lunch at the pool - the waiters were fantastic. Also very good breakfast. Hotel is in central Viareggio and very convenient for day trips - we went to Lucca and Pisa by train and did a boat trip to the Cinque Terre. There is an adventure park in forest behind hotel which will provide entertainment for hours. Finally, the hotel is right next door to a wonderful ice cream shop called Anisare - my children said it is the best ever!

I stayed at this hotel with my wife for just one night in May. The receptionist was helpful to tell me the way to several destinations. The room was spacious and the bed was very soft and good for me. The cost was 140EUR for one night and 15 EUR for parking. A bit more expensive than other hotels around here. However, I will stay at this hotel at the next visit to Viareggio.

This hotel is lovely, with a huge foyer and grand staircase. The rooms are spacious, there is a huge variety of delicious food for breakfast, and the location is just perfect with the mountains behind, and the sea just in front of the hotel. It is very picturesque, with lots to see and do. The staff are pleasant and helpful. There is a restaurant within the hotel, and a terrace outside for drinks/snacks. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, and definitely worth the trip. It is somewhere we would definitely return to.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel overlooking the beachfront are the best rooms.

If you like old fashioned hotels you will love this place. Lots of class and beautiful furnishings. I loved it but probably wouldn't appeal to everyone. The staff were extremely friendly and the staff on the front desk very helpful.

Dinner in the evenings was very formal and probably could be a bit more relaxed in this day and age but the waiting staff were again friendly and very good. The food was pretty average.

As it was October there was not a lot to do and on contacting our tour operation Citalia were told that all excursions finished at the end of September. However, we did get to Florence on the train and to Pisa on the bus. Both much cheaper than an excursion and we were not time limited by other people. Well worth doing on your own - cheaper and more fun.

During our five week tour of Italy we mainly stayed in B&Bs and small apartments/houses-this was one of our rare hotel stays, and we were so impressed! The Grand Hotel Royal has an important location on the beach front boulevard of Viareggio-close to some of the best restaurants and train station. We used the hotel as our headquarters for day trips to the Cinque Terre and Pisa by train. Once we parked our car in the convenient lot adjacent to the hotel (15 euros/day) we walked everywhere in the delightful city including the train station.

Our room was spacious and had a partial ocean view. The king bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was roomy and immaculate. Breakfasts were ample and included some welcome eggs and bacon each morning, in addition to the usual fare.

But what sets this hotel apart and makes our stay so memorable is the attentive and caring staff. From the front desk to the afternoon bartender (Andrea) we were given the "royal treatment"--dinner suggestions, reservations, and lots of sound, practical information!

We were not expecting this hotel to be as wonderful as it is. Would definitely stay here again and loved Viareggio!

We were so surprised that such a beautiful old palace is now a best western! Beautiful lobby and dining room and very friendly (and helpful) staff. We really enjoyed our stay, and the breakfast (yummy!). We only had two minor complaints 1.) the bed and bedding was hard and uncomfortable and 2.) noise easily passed through the walls, so one evening, we got to listen to air force one in italian instead of being able to sleep that night.

Dear Guest,
I appreciate your kind feedback and was happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the hotel
wich is a building born from begenning of 1900.
Thank you. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused, particularly for the noisy coming from the wall, and for the harding bed wich are all new in the room, this is maybe the reason.
Hope to see you another time in the future
Best wishes
