“Could definitely do with a face lift,”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2012

I stayed at the Palace Hotel, for a week last April. I think it was probably very high class back in the 1940s and it really hasn't changed much since. The decor is rather shabby and the whole place could do with a lick of paint, however I really enjoyed my stay here. When I checked in I was disappointed that my room didn't have a balcony but when I asked if it was possible to change, the lovely night porter gave me a huge room with a balcony and sea view. The food was o.k and very plentiful and if you stuck to the pasta, anti-pasti, breads and salads, it was really good. Overall I loved this quirky old hotel and will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with a balcony and sea view.

“Not for us”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

Reading the previous review, you either like or dislike this hotel. I don't know if our experience counts, because we checked out of our prepaid accommodation having just only just checked in without actually staying there. (We were booked and had prepaid for 4 days). Equally, being fair to the hotel, I'm not sure if our travel agent's allocation of rooms was particularly poor - the hotel did offer us another room without extra charge, but we just wanted to leave. The only comments we would make, are that our room looked nothing like the professional photos, and we didn't feel this was a four star hotel Maintenance needed attention. Our experience was based only on the room we were allocated.

Room Tip: Do not pay extra for lateral seaview.

“Quirky Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

You will love or hate this hotel , Drive upto it and you will wonder, walk in and you will love it, walk to your room and you will wonder, walk in and you will love it .
Give The Palace a chance, we were there 11 nights so long enough to judge it.
Its very clean, the staff are very helpful in their own italian way, the service and the food in the restraunt was good ,never great.
Viareggio is a seaside town ,The Palace is on the front, it is on a very busy road, you do hear traffic and people all night in all the front rooms. But if you read about the hotel before you go they dont hide this.
Like I have said ,you will love or hate the Palace , the same can be said about Viareggio.
We found it was great to travel from , the train is a ten min walk away from the hotel, the trains are easy to use and very inexpensive, you can cet to most places on them with no problems .
We visited Florence, Pisa, Lucca , to see them properly you need to go two days to each.
We got bikes for a day , you have to do it , its so flat you can go for miles up or down the coast.
If its the beach you like , its great ,miles and miles of clean sand .
Viareggio is very expensive, so a tip on eating out , dont eat at the front, walk up the side streets, they are full of very nice coffee shops , bars and restraunts that will cost you half the price of the ones on the front.
We could find no faults with the hotel the staff or the area, I used the word Quirky at the start , I can think of no other word to sum it up.

Room Tip: Ask for a back room if you dont want noise, a front one for a view ,,,but then you have the noise.

“Charming, Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Our three day stay here, was in a word: "enjoyable." The hotel has a good central location for getting to and from anything that you might want to see or do. The staff aims to please and more importantly they are generally successful in that undertaking!

Our top floor room had a cute little balcony with views of the sea and the mountains. The sunset shows were worth the price of the upgrade. The king bed was comfortable. The bathroom well appointed. Being off the main street made the setting serene and quiet.

The breakfast buffet was varied and of high quality. Perfect cappuccino! A highlight is the roof terrace and the bar. We spent a good part of each day lounging and imbibing. A shout out to the night hostess, Claudia. She was a delight. We didn't dine in the hotel for lunch or dinner, but the dining room was always quite crowded.

The hotel's clientele skews toward the gray-hair set, but we didn't feel out of place. Although the overall aesthetic and entertainment program is definitely skewed to this demographic. The dining room doesn't open until 7:45 PM and it was full by 7:50! It was comical one night when we sat in the lobby using the free internet watching people queue up for the evening's rendition of release the hungry hounds!

The only note of caution is that the internet is an extra 13 euro's per day and it only enables one device. There is free reliable internet service in the lobby, however.

We'll be back again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the main street are going to be noisy, especially during summer weekends.

“Friendly relaxing hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

We spent a week here during our first trip to Italy. Whilst the cosmetics of the building could benefit from the odd touch of low level maintenence we found the place clean, tidy and well positioned for the town, beach and surrounding area.
Staff were helpful and spoke good English. Food was good and the restaurant staff attentive and accommodating.

We just loved Claudia (practice, practice) who manned the terrace bar, we found her friendly, funny and a great asset to the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel.

All in all the hotel gets the thumbs up and we would certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to visit the area.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front of the hotel have sea views, but have the road the is the main through road just...
