“welcoming but basic, extra star for parking”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2014 via mobile

We were welcomed here and given a choice of rooms. The room was basic and bathroom was nice with extras.
Unfortunately, the WiFi was intermittent but as breakfast was a good selection we could forgive the poor WiFi. Also, as we were on a motorbike we appreciated the underground parking during the thunder storm!
At €80 a night it was good enough value for money.

We were a little skeptical of this place because the reviews are so divergent. But many of the complaints here are nothing like our experience. The AC was fine. The room was quiet enough, considering it is next to a busy street and across from the ferry terminal (you can hear announcements from the boat, but we found this charming) and a playground. There's a farmers' market once per week right in front of the hotel, which is fun (confirm the day with the front desk) and convenient; you can end up with a nice picnic lunch or dinner.

Our room included a refrigerator, which was stocked with prosecco, mineral and frizzante water, and so on. The frizzante was only .20 more than the cafe across the street; I think the prosecco was 3 euro. If you want more things in your room, there's a supermarket about 10 minutes away.

The service was fine, ample cleaning and the beds were comfortable enough (I was in the third bed in a triple, so I may not have had the best experience). The bathroom window frame was coming apart, but that was the only sort of poor maintenance I could spot, and who cares how the bathroom window looks anyway?

Our stay included breakfast, and I would rate that as completely standard. You'll see coldcuts and cheese, toast and pastry, yogurt, cereals, etc. The staff is pretty straight-faced, but attentive enough. There are two seating areas and only one buffet spread, so food supplies can run low periodically.

Now for the rave: Pallanza is a great find on Lago Maggiore. The ferry connects to Stresa and the Borromean Islands very frequently, and is very affordable. But Stresa is a bit more touristy, so it's nice to visit there and stay in Pallanza. Actual Italian people actually fare la passeggiata (evening stroll) along the lake, walk their dogs, take their kids to play in the park, and you can mix freely with them without feeling out of place or like an intruder as you might in other towns.

Finally, one more tip: if you come by train, a taxi ride is 20 euro and saves you from figuring out the bus and wrestling your bags on and off. If you don't mind a walk and plan accordingly, you can take the train to Stresa and walk 10 minutes downhill to the ferry stop and get to Pallanza (in front of your hotel) for 3-4 euro and enjoy nice views of the lake and islands to boot.

The staff here was really, really helpful in finding restaurants and things to do. Our room was fine and the breakfast was typical European (only cold, hard boiled eggs). We really liked Pallanza and Lago Maggiore much better than Lake Como and Bellagio. The later was jammed packed with tourists, elbo to elbo, and one tourist shop after another. Pallanza, in contrast, had a much more authentic, Italian village feel to it. There was no swarm of tourist or tourist shops. In addition there is ready access to the 3 Belmonian (spelling?) Islands which are worth a days sight seing. We also enjoyed the Lago Maggiore Express that goes by rail from Stresa (just across the lake from Pallanza, travels north into the Alps foothills, then eastward to Locarno in Switzerland at the head of the lake. From there you take a waiting fery down Lake Maggiore to Pallanza.

Room Tip: Get a lake view room

Centrally located, in a rather calm spot of Verbania region, right in front of the boat terminal to the lake islands, old times charm but comfortable.
Not much to do or see around but close to Stresa by boat and Intra by car.
Very spacious rooms and bathroom
Very bright and airy room, good matresses but bad pillows, no air con but fresh air coming through the windows.
Ok breakfast, nothing special, no cooked dish but you'll find something to eat.
Wifi very bad, unfortunately.
Parking is possible near by, but could be a problem during peak season.

Room Tip: Front lake view is fantastic but could be a bit noisy because of cars passing by as there is no air...

We stayed at this hotel in July 2013. It has a beautiful location, right in front of Lago Maggiore and the ferry terminal. However the hotel is old and not that clean nor pretty. Our bathroom was run down, neon light was blinking and barely any pressure in the shower. Breakfast was very ordinary and it took forever just to get coffee and extra utensils for the kids - the people working the breakfast seemed simply overwhelmed. My main complaint about the hotel is that I had specifically asked, before booking, if the room was air conditioned, and they said that it was. When we got there, we quickly realized that although there was, technically, A/C in the room and that it was, technically, running, all it did was shoot regular air (like a fan) and not cold air at all. So the room was super hot, to the point that it was extremely uncomfortable to sleep in and the kids had to sleep with wet towels on them. Unfortunately because of the noisy street and the lack of mosquito screens on the windows, we could not leave them open. When I called the front desk they argued with me that the A/C did work, tried a few things and ended up telling us there was nothing they could do because the maintenance guy was not available until next day. The next day he came when we were out of the room, and when we came back the front desk said that he basically did nothing, because the A/C worked. But it truly didn't. So after two nights of very little sleep, the hotel brought us a fan they had in the hotel somewhere, which made for a so-so third night, definitely not air conditioning but more bearable in the very hot weather. When we checked out I complained again about the lack of A/C and the fact that it was an essential requirement to my booking, and all they did was offer me a 50$ discount on the room. Not pleased with our stay at all.

Stayed in the San Gottardo. Great location just opposite the ferry mooring. Reception very friendly and helpful with advice about parking. Our room was great with a fantastic view over the lake. Everything was clean and others have noted the AC did not work - though I think in retrospect this is because the state sets a minimum temperature level - and its wasn't that hot. The public areas are all a bit jaded and there are no facilities other than dining. Breakfast was good though the staff struggled to cope at busy times. We did not eat dinner at the hotel. Reasonable value.

This hotel must have been truly beautiful during its prime. It is a majestic building that sits on the shore of Lago Maggiore and is conveniently located within walking distance to several cafes and restaurants. The entire hotel was refurbished in 2005, but it appears not much has been done since then for maintenance and upkeep as it is currently a bit run down. The carpet on the steps does not look like it has been cleaned since the refurbishment, and the air conditioning did not work. On the bright side, the staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fine, but the wait staff was overworked. It may not be paradise, but it is a relatively inexpensive hotel, with a good location, that reminds you of better days.
