“Great location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2014

We stayed at Hotel Pallanza for 2 nights in May 2014. We were received very warmly by the staff and the room was nice too, albeit no frills. They were very accommodating with our baby and provided a crib in the room also (at a charge) There is some outdoor seating overlooking the lake. The hotel is right outside the ferry station where you can easily catch a ride to the Borromeo Islands (must see Isola Madre) or to Stresa. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance and also nearby lovely Villa Taranto.
Overall, nice hotel, great staff and great location if you want to spend some quiet time on Lake Maggiore.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the lake may be quieter. Our room faced the alley and we had some noise from late night...

My wife and I spent three nights at the Hotel Pallanza, so we could enjoy the western-side of Lago Maggiore. The Hotel Pallanza, it turns out, is in a really excellent location for this since the dock from which the boats go to the Borromean Islands and to other towns on the Lago, is literally a one-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel is loaded with old-world character and is directly across the road from the lake, which undoubtedly makes for a nice stay at an atmospheric locale like Lago Maggiore. There's parking along the lake-side only and the hotel provides guests with a window-permit for that. There was fairly good availability of parking spots for our rental-car, though I can't say whether or not this is the case in the high summer tourist season. Still, there is tourism at the lake in September so I was satisfied with the situation.
While the Hotel Pallanza is a genuinely nice hotel and the staff is very friendly and helpful, there were a few things that I’ll note in my review. We took a room with a lake-view and a balcony...both of which come at additional costs beyond the price of the hotel’s standard room. Even though it was on the third floor, any and all conversation on the porch on street-level below as well as any other noises from cars, trucks, etc. were quite pronounced and in the morning, were particularly obtrusive. This may have been attributable to the fact that the hotel had already shut-off the air-conditioning system for the year, as we were told. Since it was still quite warm, being September in Italy, we had to keep the doors to the balcony open. I suppose that if the air-conditioning were still operating and the doors to the balcony could be closed, the outside noise wouldn't have been so much of a problem. But, beyond that, while there isn't much guest traffic on the hotel floor outside the room, any conversation at all was also very obtrusive and I have to conclude that the rooms aren't very well protected from any noises, wherever they may come from. I really thought it was unusually noisy, even given all the traveling that my wife and I do.
Something else...while we did upgrade, as mentioned, to a lake-view room with a balcony. Still, the room was rather unimpressive. I think that I'd expected something more from the photos that are posted on the Internet suggesting the level of the room that might be expected at the Hotel Pallanza. It was fairly small, though not so small as to be awful. It was immaculate, though, so even given the size, was not uncomfortable. The bathroom was also small, though immaculate and though the shower was particularly tiny, it was otherwise fine. (Please see the photos that are posted with this review.) So, if you’re given to prefer a more luxurious accommodation I’d suggest that you call the hotel directly rather than use any of the hotel-booking websites so as to be able to better address your needs and avoid any disappointment. And, I guess a further point is that when considering the Hotel Pallanza, it might be preferable to take a room that isn’t facing the lake even if that seems appealing as it did to us.
With all that I’ve said, I don’t want to give the impression that we didn’t enjoy our three-day stay at the Hotel Pallanza and I'll give it a "Very Good" rating. With a little more attention to your particular needs than you might have to give to another hotel elsewhere, it will be a fine place for your stay stay at Lago Maggiore.

Stayed for 7 nights 2nd - 9th. September and had an excellent relaxing break. Room so comfortable with balcony overlooking lake and very clean. Views amazing! Had requested soft mattress and we were provided with a woollen mattress which meant we slept very well. Tea served in room every morning at 7.30. Service excellent. Staff very friendly and efficient. Recommendations for dining were great, no problems with language and the place had a lovely friendly ambience. Can recommend for traditional family welcome at a charming, individual and quiet hotel.

Room Tip: Book a room with the hotel direct to get a balcony room overlooking Lake Maggiore. Well worth the ex...

I am a bit torn on this review. We chose this hotel because it was about the only thing still open in Verbania with rooms available on the night we arrived in town. On the one hand, the hotel is lovely and charming and the staff are friendly and helpful. They spoke English, Italian and French. The room was spotlessly clean and the view over the lake well worth the extra few Euros. Breakfast was included and was good. The location was ideal for catching the boat across the lake.

On the other hand, the hotel promotes itself (and charges your wallet) as 4-star and yet is missing several amenities you'd expect. No bath robes, no slippers, no turn down service, etc. Scratchy, thin toilet paper. The rooms are small, even for European standards. As another reviewer said, the decor does look a bit like "antiqued garage sale" pieces. The bed wasn't very comfortable and you could easily hear noises from other parts of the building.

But...we found it charming in spite of the negatives and the staff let us put our luggage in a secured area after checkout so we didn't have to drag it all over town. I don't know if we'd stay here again, but we would at least consider it because the positives outweighed the negatives (for us).

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a lake-view room. It's worth it.

After a demanding business trip in Italy we arrived on Friday afternoon in Verbania at the Hotel Pallanza. It is located at the lake, very near the town centre of Verbania-Pallanza. It is a nice 4-star hotel with the amenities you would usually expect, an old building but well renovated, in the lobby, the restaurant as well as in the rooms. However there is a distinctive difference to other hotels of the same class: friendliness and the dedication to make guests happy. Without exception, all employees we had contact with seemed to be there just to serve our needs. Be it the receptionist who took care of us, or the young waiter, who served us breakfast with pleasure even though we overslept, or all the other employees we met, they all made us feel like being on a relaxing holiday trip.

The only not so positive point we could mention is the wireless LAN, though free, it is either unavailable or very slow. But I am sure that the hotel management will take care of this.

The Hotel Pallanza definitely deserves a top recommendation. Five smileys!

What do you want from a hotel? A warm welcome.....we got it! Good food...we got it..though it was a bit odd being marched along the street to a sister restaurant in the rain and asked to sit in a sectioned off corner because a coach party was taking the rest...AND a comfortable bed...oh how we did NOTget a good bed. If I had slept on an ironing board it might have been an improvement. I KNOW everyone likes different degrees of hardness/softness in a bed but all I can say is that if you are a "softy" then steer clear of the Pallanza. Reception staff were delightful and helpful and we got free garage parking. Lovely team.

Room Tip: Forget the room..take your own bed!

There are several things we really liked about this hotel:
- location: excellent, by the border lake, possibility to ask a room with lake view
- helpfulness of the staff: constantly available to respond questions and clarify doubts
- good food: both at breakfast as for dinner
- transportation: relatively easy to find a parking spot (if coming by car), the staff will provide you explanations about the system
- the lake: the quay is just 100m from the hotel steps and you can easily enjoy the islands with a day tour
- several languages spoken: English, Italian, German, French

But above all, we'll always remember the personality of this place where the staff was always a smile!
Great job done by Pallanza hotel team!
