“Great atmosphere, superb service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

Having stayed one night at Hotel Ancora, we would definitely come back!
The hotel has an excellent location with an amazing view to the lake. The room we stayed at had a warm and pleasant ambience, and it was functionally very well furnished. The lady at the reception was really friendly and service minded, making a good check-in and check-out experience. We also appreciated her being helpful when asking for a wine opener and wine glasses in the late evening :-) And at last the breakfast is amazing, wide variety of quality food and the freshly squeezed orange juice was a delight!

Room Tip: Make sure you choose a room with view to the like, it's definitely worthy for the extra!

Trying to find a good room in Verbania was a bit tricky. I booked two rooms here and they were both extremely nice. The hotel was super friendly and clean, but the best part was the views from the rooms and the breakfasts. The breakfasts were the best part. I'd go back again just for their breakfasts. Everything the served was extremely fresh. And I appreciated that they also used Frette table cloths and napkins. I was very pleased and impressed with the attention to detail the staff puts into their work, especially at breakfast. I even dropped an ink refill capsule from my pen, and the next day at breakfast they handed it to me.

The rooms had lovely views of the lake and the marina. Which also made the hotel's location great. It was easy to get on a boat and tour the islands and the lake, which are really the major points of attraction.

Surprisingly the town of Verbania is not all that bad. There are a few good places to eat, kind of tucked away, but they exist, just takes a little digging. There are also a couple of good shops for clothing.

*My mom left her clothes in the dresser at checkout, and a few hours later the hotel called to tell us they had them. I returned a few hours later to pick them up. This was greatly appreciated!

I cannot fault the hotel itself, it is well run, very clean and modern and most of the staff are polite and friendly, although the greeting we received from one of the receptionists on our arrival was as cold as ice. We soon learnt to save our questions for the other receptionist, who was kind and helpful. The breakfast was lovely and the rooms had a nice size fridge for mini bar and anything else you want from the nearby supermarket. They also provided free bottled water, both fizzy and plain, every day, which is a very nice touch.

Unfortunately, this hotel is situated in Intra, a built up area with lots of shops and bars but not that many restaurants. The staff in the restaurants we used did not appear to want visitors to return, most being cool at best and sometimes downright rude. On our first day, when eating at the prime lakeside pizzeria, we witnessed a couple being sent away with a flea in their ear because they dared ask for food at 2.45pm. Another time we entered an empty restaurant at 7pm, got glared at by the owner who was on the phone, and finally we were served, with a slamming down of cutlery worthy of Hotel Faulty Towers.

OK, we thought, we'll eat at other towns. Well Stresa is a lovely resort but the last ferry back to Intra is 7.30pm and we didn't have a car. The exception is Laveno, where the car ferry runs back and forth up until 12.30 am, but again, don't try to eat there between 2.30 - 6pm.

We had some nice ferry trips out and good days, but I have to say we have never met such an unfriendly bunch of people as in this area, and we have stayed at several other Italian resorts including Lake Garda. Buying a ferry ticket at Intra is akin to an interrogation - you ask for what you want, you are told you can't have it and have various questions fired at you, you eventually get a ticket which turns out to be what you asked for in the first place. Tip: don't try to speak Italian, don't smile or be friendly - you seem to get more respect for it.

To top it all, we encountered some extremely rude check-in and security staff at Malpensa 2 on the way home. You start to wonder if it is you, and when a member of EasyJet cabin crew smiled at me and said 'good morning', I nearly cried.

If you must stay at Intra, the Ancora Hotel is very good, but If I returned to Lake Maggiore, I would definitely stay at Stresa, a large resort that caters for tourists. Maybe we would have had a different experience had we stayed there.

Room Tip: We had a deluxe room with balcony - an essential to have somewhere to sit out. There is traffic noi...

Arriving over the wintery heights of the Simplon pass, Verbania, on the northern edge of Lake Maggiore spread before us green and lush and warm. Hotel Ancora is set about five miles east of the main highway continuing south to Milan; by the tourist ferry dock and near to the antique court-yards and cobbled alleys of the town. With my head full of drowsy romance, it was a bit of a shock to find the main town roundabout absorbed in elated passion...Juventus had just won Serie A and everyone was celebrating. Kids, girls, boys, parents, grand parents everyone was out on the street and waving a flag. But you had to love it, after all what would Italy be without passion. The hotel staff were extremely lovely, helping us navigate the parking (set back over the main roundabout) and settling us in with a couple of aperitivos on the terrace. They were great with the dogs too; happy to bring water and make sure we were all comfortable. About 7pm the peace and quiet returned and in the morning the sun rising over the lake, seen from the balcony, was enough to convince that this is another great independent hotel that deserves another visit.

Room Tip: Definitely book a room with balcony - wonderful to step out in the morning and watch the sun-rise.

The hotel was very nicely designed throughout. Both the bedroom and bathroom furnishings were excellent. The breakfast choice was very good. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel is situated right in the middle of the town and rooms at the front overlook the lake. What more could you want? Oh yes, it also accepts dogs.

This is a great traditional hotel centrally located on the waterfront opposite the ferry terminal and close to shops and restaurants. Our en-suite room was modern, clean, quiet, spacious and comfortable. It had all the amenities you needed. The staff were helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was great with lots of choice of fresh food. The room had a great view over the harbour and lake, lovely to wake up to. The parking is just over the road next to the car ferry and the hotel have a concession rate per day to park. You can pull onto the front of the hotel to off load cases. We would recommend this hotel to travelers in the area.

Room Tip: All seem good.

From start to finish we loved this hotel! First off, how can you beat the view!!?? We rented a Junior Suite with a terrace and lake view - WOW! The room was spacious and had a separate sitting area from the bedroom - perfect! It had two large french-doors that opened onto a lovely terrace overlooking the main street and the lake. Stunning! We ate breakfast in our room - on the terrace - each morning. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel was absolutely perfect! Would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: Book a junior suite with a lake view - you won't be disappointed!
