“you will find it terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

we (my wife and I) have been stayed in this hotel for 3 days. best thing about the hotel is the very nice view over the lake and forest. breakfast is good enough. but the negative points:

- very old style (which will be interesting for some people) but nothing is working properly!
- very angry, impolite reception desk
- expensive service (internet, food, ..)
- hard transportation (it is on top of a hill without any special transportation, should take taxi all the time)

the hotel is nice in the view and old style, but it could be very very very better if the reception learns how to smile, the air conditioners work better, a shuttle to the city (downhill) provided, the mattress of the bed has been changed, the shower works better ,....

finally it never worth the price (about 110 euro for a double). if it was 20 euro ,uuuummmm good ;)

Staying for two nights at the Grand Palace Hotel was one of the memorable experiences of our trip.
It certainly is "grand" with its imposing position on top of a hill overlooking the houses of Varese and Lake Varese itself. It is immersed in a park full of huge trees, just outside the centre of Varese so it's convenient to have a car!
When you walk into the lobby it is as if you are entering the world of the Grand Epoque, albeit faded and showing signs of wear. You are immediately struck by the immensely high ceilings, marble columns, sparkling chandeliers and groups of sitting areas furnished with comfortable leather settees and lounge chairs. Numerous public rooms lead off the main lobby for functions large and small. A grand staircase leads down to the lobby. The carpets on the staircase have certainly seen better days but don't detract from the overall impression of grandeur. There is an elevator to all the upper floors.
Our room on the third floor was huge and had a balcony with a view of the park, the houses and the lake. Stunning. There was a big bed, bedside tables, desk, coffee table, velvet covered chairs, lots of lamps, a mini fridge and a flat screen TV with two English channels. All the tonings were in pastel pinks, greens and greys and there was an air of sumptuous elegance of times past, but not forgotten.
The bathroom was vast with everything you'd wish for in a bathroom – lots of towels, toiletries, tub, bidet (if you are so inclined) and bright lights. Spotlessly clean.
A quality buffet breakfast with an enormous range of breakfast foods, both sweet and savoury, was offered in one of the dining rooms. I couldn't believe just how much was available and the platters and baskets were kept topped up by the staff.
From what I could ascertain from a rather distant receptionist, there is a voucher system for 30 minutes free WiFi in the lobby if you have your own laptop. Included in the price of the room, there is a voucher for 15 minutes free time on the hotel computer in the Business corner. WiFi is available in the bedrooms on payment.
The staff at the Front Desk of a hotel is always a vital key in a guest's negative or positive response to that place. We found the staff at the Reception desk to be the main draw back to this hotel. They were rather superior, not very welcoming on the whole and not very helpful in responding to questions. They spoke English. A few warm smiles would have been welcomed!
Despite this niggle, we found the Grand Palace Hotel to be excellent value for money and we would heartily recommend a stay here!

Price vs Performance was very good. I would stay again in this hotel while visiting Varese. Hotel is situated above the city of Varese in a beautiful Park. High ceilings, marble columns, nice hotel bar with woodwork, etc. "Grand Hotel" but they kept renovation on a minimum (I assume it must be very expensive to keep it uptodate - therefore the price was very much appropriate). Friendly and helpful staff, a clean room, nice view.

We made this hotel our one night stop on our way home due to the price and expected price performance. We were not disappointed. This old mansion is somewhat unique in that it looks more like an apartment building than a hotel. However after entering one discovers a very nice ground floor with unusual high ceilings. There was a congress going on but except for the signs there was no negative impact on the guests. The room we were given was quite large as instead of a double room we were given a good size triple room with a magnificent view. The obvious negative during our short stay was the lack of international TV stations.
Breakfast was included in the room price. The buffet was average, the juices were syrup based but the 2 coffee machines enabled us to make coffee to our liking.
The only service we used was the Reception for check-in and check-on: friendly and efficient.
The location can be viewed as central but the points of interest are 30 – 45 minutes away by car.
The trade-off is the room rate is about half of similar hotels on or close to the lake shores.
With the above in mind I would recommend this 4 star hotel.

Located on top of a hill, this old palace is magnificent. The lobby is elegant, the rooms are large, the bathroom is huge. Our room, on the third floor, overlooked the lake-a view we enjoyed morning, noon, and night. The food was very good, for hotel food. There was a large selection to choose from at breakfast. Others have said that the carpeting is worn, but I think it adds charm to the old palace feel. The grounds are pretty, too.

Room Tip: The view is breathtaking overlooking the lake.

This is one of those fantastic properties you always admire from afar ! It is truly grand, the hotel is fantastically maintained and the rooms are lovely with amazing views over the lakes of northern Italy and the alps. Breathtaking.
The service was great, the bar is lovely and the bar man Marco has many stories and photos of the hotels colorful history. Including its occupation by Hitlers army - and the hotels use as an army hospital. We loved it, a real find.
