“Good hotel very close to the slopes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

Stayed at the Du Col for 1 week over the New Year period as part of a ski holiday with Crystal. The hotel's central location is very convenient with an ATM, cafes and a the hire shop all within 20 seconds of the front doors. The room was fairly specious with comfortable beds and good storage space. However, the bathroom was let down by a very low shower and an almost non-existent screen. This meant that showering, no matter how careful you were, resulted in a small lake on the bathroom floor.

Another problem was the hugely unreliable hotel WIFI which simply didn't work unless the hotel was empty during the middle of the day. However, mounting complaints must have jerked the staff into action and the WIFI was upgraded on the second to last day of our stay and seemed to be working better.

The last issue, which can be avoided during booking, was the room location. As a road-facing room, as oppose to slope-facing, it was often hard to go to sleep with a constant buzz of people outside. Snowploughs going past in the morning were not the most pleasant aspect of my stay either...

The best aspects of the Du Col were undoubtedly its slope-side location; 2 mins walk from main Sestriere chairlift, the food; a huge buffet with great variety and quality each night and the staff; friendly and available throughout the entire day.

All in all the Du Col is a solid option for ski holidays in Sestriere providing lift access on its doorstep, great communal spaces, a lively bar and excellent food.

Great location just next to slopes, good facilities, great service and very warm hospitality from the staff were the highlights of our stay. Food good too, plenty available and very tasty. Only downside was the noise in the early hours from the snow ploughs. Ear plugs didn't keep it out and as we had lots of snow during our visit, unfortunately we had lots of interrupted sleep.

I have just returned following a weeks holiday at the Hotel du Col with Crystal. This is the second time we have skied this area. Previously we stayed in Sauze D'Oulx. We enjoyed a great holiday which was excellent value for money, but would comment as follows:

1. we were surprised to save over €60 by going direct to the ski hire shop recommended by Crystal rather than booking the hire through Crystal direct. The hire shop is conveniently located just a few doors down from the hotel. You need to return your skis by 5.30pm on the last day, which was a bit of a rush;

2. the rooms facing the road are extremely noisy. We were in room 111 and even with ear plugs were woken early each day and disturbed through the night;

3. the food is good, but the buffet is a real scrum every evening. I have never eaten in Italy where guests are given just an hour to have dinner. You are not rushed out of the restaurant at the end of the meal and the wine is plentiful and easy to drink, but there is simply nothing left after this time;

4. the Crystal trip to Montgenevre in France felt like a rip-off to us. This cost €23 per person. The bus arrived an hour late meaning the benefit of getting the bus in the first place was lost. We asked the rep if she could ask the driver to return later, but this was refused. A large no. of the lifts were also closed on the day. I was unsure how the rep did not know this would be the case.

On the positive side, the staff at the hotel could not have been more efficient and pleasant. The ski and boot rooms are great. You can literally walk out onto the slope and get onto the main chair within 5 mins. The ski area is huge and varied. There is a fantastic pizza bar (a slice of delicious pizza is only €2) 6 doors away and the most amazing chocolate shop over the road. And as others have said, the bar in the basement (Pub du Col) really makes this hotel.

My overall rating for this hotel would be 'good'.

Room Tip: Insist on a slope facing room

This was our second stay as part of a Crystal Holiday. Many of the staff were the same, very friendly and helpful. Clean and great food served buffet style. The slopes and ski lifts could not be closer. Great deals with sister bars (ask for details) and you get 10% off meals. Highly recommended hotel for families.

Excellect hotel and highly recommended. Booked our holiday through Crystal Ski. Ok the rooms are a little bit dated but its all adds to the warmth and feel of the hotel. Rooms very comfortable, large, cleaned daily and very quiet considering the hotel is located on the main road, honestly you won't hear a thing. TV, sat, large beds, plenty of space to walk around in the rooms, bath, shower etc. The staff throughout the hotel are amazing and make the whole experience very enjoyable and they can't do enough for you and are very polite and funny. The food delicious, plenty of choice to cater for everyone, we normal try and eat out somewhere different on the last night on our holidays but the food was so good we stayed at the hotel every night. The hotel is centrally located in sestriere and only a short walk to all the shops, restuarant and bars. There is a bar located within the hotel that is used by all the crystal customers staying in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed having a drink and a laugh with other people, staff and the crystal rep's in resort and made some new friends who we are looking to meet up with next year to ski again. The charity evening with the horse racing and live music is not to be missed. If your worried about the noise of the bar if you don't like to have a drink, honestly you won't ear a thing in your rooms. On to the Skiing, excellent, loved every minute of my time on the slopes with my partner and friends and we enjoyed the whole area plus also skied over in Montgenevre with the crystal away day, highly recommened to take up this option and have a go on The Monty Express. Normally ski in the French resort but after the excellent experience of skiing in Sestriere and staying at the Hotel Du Col we will be looking to return very soon. If your looking for a ski holiday in Sestriere there is only one place to book and that is the Hotel Du Col.

We stayed at the du Col for the last week of Crystal's ski season and were very pleased with the service and value for money.

The rooms are very dated in decor and the carpet in our room had seen better days, but overall they were adequate for the amount of time you spend in a hotel room. We always travel with a 4 socket extension cord and that solved the socket issue some have commented on.

We had a road facing room and it was quite noisy, but then we always sleep with the window open!

The hotel staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and were especially good with the younger children staying while we were there. The food is plentiful and there is a good variety; only the pickiest eater would struggle to find something acceptable. On the second evening, we arrived to find our drinks order from the previous night already on the table and staff were observant and pre-empted requests for refills.

The boot room is heated and next to the ski room, just a few steps from the slopes which makes for a hassle free route in and out of the hotel.

The Wifi, 10 Euros per device per week, was fine if you were in the lounge, but couldn't take the strain in our room of multiple users at peak times.

We were very happy with the skiing in Sestriere, although the comments about poor run markings/map are accurate on some runs. Our favourite coffee stop was the restaurant we called 'cafe Bimbo' on the red run by the same name. With a sunny terrace and views down into Sestriere, there really was no better place to admire the scenery.

On our arrival day we had lunch in the pizza restaurant over the road from the hotel (next to the newsagent). Our teenagers were delighted to choose their pizza by the metre and service was quick and friendly.

If you want an unpretentious hotel with friendly, helpful staff and very easy access to the slopes then du Col should be on your short list.

This was our 6th stay! This time we took some family, including children with us. It's absolutely brilliant. We were constantly asked if the children needed anything else, but the range of food was more then enough even for anyone having a picky day. Nice to see some warmth has krept into the boot room....

Some of our party tried out the local gym, a short walk away & reported it as very good.

We're just waiting for some work info so we can book for next year!

Room Tip: Think about whether you want a view of the mountains - which comes with the noise of music & pis...
