“Are all the positive reviews justified?? Read on for an update..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

I was first told about the Roseo Hotel on a flight to Monaco. I asked the couple sitting next to me for a good ski hotel close to the Riviera. They wholeheartedly recommended this hotel & Sestriere as it was close and top notch both for skiing and for accommodation. So, even before I looked it up on the web, the positive reviews started coming...

But are the copious positive reviews on Tripadvisor justified? Read on and as always, I will give you the honest truth....

This hotel isn't really 5 stars. You know that as it only has 2 types of rooms, and no suites. When you first arrive, there isn't a doorman to help you lift your ski bags. Furthermore, you notice little signs of simplicity like the basic all-weather carpeting & the basic room furniture. And when you go for your meals, you notice it's buffet style with everyone piling in at the same time (half board is the norm here).

Yet, soon enough, you will discover that all the simplicity makes sense. The furnishings are weatherproof for obvious reasons, the decor gives the hotel a "mountain-lodge" feel, and the buffet is marvelous! Everything is practical but everything works! Here is a summary:

Decor: practical mountain lodge interspersed with Italian style
Rooms: relatively basic but tastefully decorated with all the necessities (check out the jacuzzi!)
Pool: large though packed with kids but has nice communal jacuzzi next to it
Spa & Gym: new Technogym equipment and adequate; didn't try massages
Parking: 40 covered spaces for only Euro 10 a night and around 20 outdoor spots

But.. food and service deserves a special mention.. the food is superb! I am not a fan of buffets but here the buffet was plentiful and constantly replenished. I spoke to a family that stayed here for 2 weeks and the choices were different every night! There is something to suit everyone's tastes from freshly cooked pasta, to meats, to fish to fresh salads. And.. red/white wine is free flowing (a delight for us Brits!).

As for service, it's efficient and friendly. Though there isn't a doorman or valet, once you enter you meet staff that are friendly, helpful and well-trained. Benedetta, Martina and Dino at reception are very professional and the manager of the restaurant is excellent! There is also an efficient van shuttle service that picks you up within 5 minutes anywhere in town. But you don't really need to use it as this hotel is virtually ski in/out (just walk up the slope outside & you're on the slope.. and ski back too!).

So all in all, the positive reviews are spot on! There are a few niggles like the poor wifi reception (esp on the top floor & in restaurant/bar), limited free parking (they shouldn't let the public park outside but only guests), and access to ski room (steep bare steps.. not good for ski boots).... but hey, nothing is perfect in life!!

PS: as for skiing in Sestriere, it's very good - equivalent to Verbier. Just don't try to get to France as it will take you a long time on chairlifts (& not covered by ski pass, unless you only have a daily one)

Room Tip: If you wan't extra space, get a room on the top/6th floor. They have no view but are larger and...

We have just come back from a weeks stay here. Great location for this ski in/ski out hotel literally yards from slopes. Staff were great and food was fantastic. Free wine and water provided every night with dinner. About 15 minute walk to centre shops and bars was only negative though hotel does provide a courtesy bus though this stops at 7pm. Really good spa and gym area too. Rooms were spotless. An excellent choice and we would happily return

Room Tip: we stayed in a superior room - 412 - had a jacuzzi bath - worth the extra money with great mountain...

Stayed at Roseo over the half term break with our children, we couldn't have picked a better accommodation!
Location - 5 minutes walk to town. There is a free shuttle available for guests which we used frequently, very handy when collecting ski equipment. The main skiing area of Sestriere is across the hotel drive, you can ski down to the chairlift which takes you up to the Sestriere's side of the mountain or the gondola that connects the nearby ski areas - Sansicario, Sauze D'Oulx, Claviere or France. We preferred Sestriere as it's higher and the snow quality much better. Great location for skiing!
Room - we had two connected rooms at the fourth floor, very comfortable beds, tv, good bathrooms and great views of the mountains from the balconies. Oddly the bigger bedroom was made up for the kids, the fridge wasn't always re-stocked with drinks but other than that we were very pleased with the accommodation.
Restaurant- superb! Both quantity and quality of food was outstanding. Very wide choice of antipastos, first and second courses and amazing desserts and fruit. The chefs were also more than happy to make simpler pasta for children. The table wine that was included in the price was not so great, in particular the white was not chilled, but there was an excellent wine list selection available. Staff were very friendly and efficient.
Bar / pool / reception area - all very nice! We loved a drink or two after skiing in the cozy bar area. There were always free cakes in the afternoon and a selection of savouries before dinner. The pool was beautiful and our children loved going there on most days.
All staff were very welcoming and professional.
Sestriere town is quiet, only a handful of places to go for a drink. The hotel facilities were much better so the fact we were not in the centre wasn't really a problem.
All in all we had a fantastic week and would be happy to return to this top resort and beautiful hotel in future!

Overall this is a nice hotel and they try hard to please in the restaurant.

There are 2 areas the hotel could improve on:

1. The wifi in the rooms is woeful and poor and for a 4* star hotel in this day and age this is unacceptable. A side issue, which the hotel acknowledge, is that the user must re-login each time an iphone or iPad logs out of the network - very annoying.

2. We had a problem with out safe that couldn't be repaired as it was early evening and I guess the maintenance man wanted to go home (?). We were told that a replacement would be installed in our room the next day - which wasn't. When checking with reception they told me this had been done but clearly their maintenance people hadn't done it. The safe was eventually replaced exactly 24 hours later. Maintenance man not happy as he had to stay late (?). Again not really 4* service ?
Whilst on the subject of safes, they are big enough only for a wallet and passport and certainly don't accommodate a laptop or even an iPad.

The buffet food is plentiful although not a massive selection for vegetarians as having pasta with tomato sauce each night gets a little boring.

The free wine at dinner (a slightly fizzy white or red) and a few soft drinks in the room is a nice touch.

The spa and swimming pool area is highly recommended and is a major feature of the hotel.

We had an upgraded room and it was very big with a nice bathroom. The room cleaning here is very good.

The girls on reception, particularly Martina are a credit to the hotel and always had a smile for each guest.

One day, the gentleman on reception tried to give me someone else's passports as they were mistakenly put in our key box.

The hotels preferred ski rental shop (MTV) is very good and as well as offering a discount they will also collect your skis from the hotel at the end of your holiday. Great service.

Overall this is a nice hotel in a good ski in/out position but I would have preferred it to be closer to town.

Great ski in/ski out hotel with very friendly staff. The hotel is very clean and the food is good (its buffet but don't be put off by that as it's very nice!). Despite it being half term, we could always get a very nice place to sit in the bar every night and it never felt too busy. Been here 3 times and enjoyed it every time. It is not located in Sestriere itself (10 minute walk or 2 minute drive) - but I prefer that. Plenty of skiing!!

Roseo is a five star service, the rooms are small but nice! Stuff very helpful and the restaurant, spa and everything is amazing! Roseo is one of the best hotels we stayed for ski. Is better than Castello Falkner in Solden and less than half a price! Also the pists are near the hotel, cross the road and you are on the ski area.

Room Tip: Ask for larger rooms!

Stayed here last week of Jan 14. Staff are lovely, very friendly team. Standard rooms (called classic) are very small. I would recommend, as others have done, upgrading. After upgrading our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the mountains but away from the piste. No noise outside. Our one night in the classic room we found it to be noisy in the corridors, which I think was a combination of the bed being so close to the partition wall, as well as changeover day with early leavers. No noise at all after the upgrade as the bed is separated from the corridor by the walk in wardrobe (oh yes) & bathroom. Bath has jets in, lovely to soak after a hard day on the piste. There are soft drinks supplied in the fridge in the room free, and are generally but not always replaced daily.
Food - cant imagine anyone NOT liking the food - so much of it, and such variety. House wine is a carafe per person & perfectly acceptable. Water is provided, as much as you would like. Breakfast is a very good mixture, continental as well as eggs/sausages/bacon plus usual cereal & bread. Orange juice is made in front of you, & two coffee machines, very well supplied food all round. And they supply hot chocolate (which is so thick a spoon is needed!) & cakes from @ 4. Only comment on the evening meal, is that it is advertised to start from 7.30pm but the doors were rarely open until @ 7.45/7.50. So don't go down too early as you will have to hang around.
A locker is supplied for skis/boots/helmet, with warm air piped through for boots & gloves, so no need to take them back to the hotel room to be dried out. The piste is separate from the hotel by a road & short incline. Back to the hotel on several snowy days we could ski almost to the door of the ski room. The locker is opened by your ski pass - the reception staff program this for you on arrival. Ask at reception for a wifi card - it is free but you need to ask as they will supply you with a card giving log in details.
There is a swimming pool & gym area (separate). Our first evening it was very busy, lots of children & our hearts did sink. However it was never that busy again, and it is worth a swim after skiing to stretch out those muscles.
Sestriere itself, I cant comment on the village as we didn't manage to make our way down there. There is a free bus supplied by the hotel, but after skiing, swimming & bath it tended to be dinner time, followed by cocktails in the hotel bar. There is a lovely ambience in the bar, with several nooks to sit in. Lots of stuffed animal heads too, in the stairs as well as the bar!
All round this is a great hotel, and we intend to return hopefully next year, and aim to get into Sestriere this time!

Room Tip: Don't go for a classic, upgrade.
