I've been in Sestri for 6 weeks and have tried most of the gelaterie here. And in all the surrounding towns. I'm certainly enjoying the growth factor of long looose dresses and tunics over leggings as a result!
Hands down, no comparison, Angel's is the best! The 3 employees who work seemingly every day take great pride in their product and their shop. I'm reminded of tomatoes in the US--you know, when we were kids and had some growing in the back yard, and they actually tasted like tomatoes, not a cheap imitation like we find in supermarkets now? That's like Angel's vs most gelaterie. The dark chocolate tastes intensely dark and complex like it's supposed to, the lighter chocolate, all milky chocolatey goodness. Canella (cinnamon) has the proper spice bite, and the fruit sorbet tastes like the fruits (mmm, mango and frutti di bosco!) have all been concentrated just so to their essence. I like that they come up with one-off flavors sometimes. The chocolate fondante, thick and dark and rich, with peperoncino is a perfect kick of hot/sweet/intense.
What is also unusual here is that if you'd like, they will talk with you about "good combinations." I wanted zuppa ingelse tonight, and I also was in the mood for tiramisu, and considering getting a little cup of a taste of each. I know the 2 have nothing in common other than they both have a little cake tezture in them. Actaully, tyheir tiramisu is loaded with cakey goodness. No way...their expressions told me plenty, that the palate won't enjoy that combo. Maybe amarena (cherry?) Or, I suggested canelli? They thought it over...Si, canella! Fantastico!
It's also fun and a relatively good bargain for pricey Sestri that the toppings are included int he base cost...lovely, well-though-out and they'lll suggest certain ones, although you're always free to choose what you want, of course. Panna (whipped cream)? Sure! It's free. And perhaps a few chopped nuts, or a splash of chocolate or cherry sauce? How about sprinkles the kids love? Or a few whole hazelnuts (nocciola). When one night he wanted ot put on a cherry on it, I cringed, imagining a US pink-red dyed Maraschino cherry, but this one was dark red, perhaps dried to its essence then reconstituted to be a cherry. And whatever you order, they top the whole thing off with a thin crispy wafer. God, I love this place!
