“A Hotel With Character in Bandipur ... Thumbs Up”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

The Gaun Ghar hotel is an old home or shop converted into a hotel. We were told that the former rulers lived there including when Bandipur was the capital of the region.. Its really a nice private charming hotel..Its well preserved to ts original form and one can see form the layout and the headroom..
When we checked in, we had to walk from the main road to the hotel as no cars were allowed in the main street.. The hotel personnel was so helpful to bring our luggage from the car to the rooms.. its a 8 mins walk, i must say... but really cool..
They offered us welcome drink with a beautiful view of the mountains and the valleys close by. We were served organic coffee... Dinner was very good.. food is very tasty and sumptuous.. lots of food and affordable price.. we had western food for a change,. Service is very personalized,. Although power came off and on at times, but we had candle lights lighted.. so not a big deal..
the room is really charming.. its wooden floor and low head room and with views of the mountains.. awesome.. heating is not too hot and water is not too clean.. but there are other plusses so, we were cool about it. Breakfast was made to order... good chef and willing to take our personal orders.. excellent noodles and fried rice...
Thank you guys @ Gaun Ghar

of course, there are a lot of brownouts in Bandipur, and the water in the bathroom cannot be very warm....the rooms have a countryside character, are small and simple. The cuisine is simple but good , breakfast excellent.
But the view on the Himalaya is beautiful , and the environment ,in the main street of this little mountain village ,is authentic.

Room Tip: of course, you must ask for the view on the Himalaya

We stayed there for one night. The house is really beautiful. It has been refurnished with such a good taste.
Our room looked to the terrace, and the views of the mountains from the windows were astonishing.
The service was friendly, and we had the best dhal baat of our trip there (with plenty of tasty dishes). I recommend to ask for it in advance, since it takes a while to cook it.
My only complain is that I find this hotel too expensive compared to other hotels of the type. For example, it's double the price of Newa Chen in Patan.

I almost passed this place over on the suggestion of The Old Inn next door (is there a rivalry?) but I'm so glad I took a chance on it. I ended up with a small room that opened onto a large terrace, with a full view of the mountains right from my bed. What more could you ask for? The room and bathroom were very clean, though everything, including the bed and bedding, smelled a little musty/damp. For some reason I was more forgiving about that here than I normally would be. Maybe because of the location?

Everything is done in very authentic Nawari style throughout the room and the entire building. Absolutely charming. (Note that Nawari style is generally dark, so be prepared for that.)

Great thoughtful touches in the room like a rechargeable flashlight (handy for all those power outages!), refillable water bottle, candles etc.

Hot water is only turned on between 6 and 8 pm and again in the morning, so if you're hoping to land in and take an afternoon shower like I was, it will be a cold one.

There's no WiFi but if you buy a beer/coffee at Heaven's Hills next door they'll hook you up to their WiFi for free, and once you've done that, from the front step of Gaun Ghar you can pick up the signal.

Food was delicious and from their organic garden. Breakfast was huge.

One drawback is that the staff is a little cool and stiff. I worked hard to get the manager, Ram, to warm up to me and I realized he's just a quiet, pensive, keep-to-himself kind of guy, but ultimately quite nice (got up at 5 am to walk me to a sunrise-watching spot).

I agree that it's a hefty price tag, but I'd be tempted to stay again just because it's so charming.

We stayed here as part of a group in April 2011. We enjoyed our stay and loved Bandipur. The rooms were basic but clean and the service was good throughout the stay. Only point to mention is I think it was a little too expensive for what you actually received.

Would highly recommend staying in bandipur, this hotel is right in the centre of bandipur. It's like the set of a film set, we spent 1 night there on the way from Pokora to chitwan. Rooms are basic and the doors are extreemly low so watch your head but this just adds to your stay. Dinner was by candle light as the power went out, food was excellent with a high attention to service. A must stop on a trip to Nepal.

We stayed in this nice hotel for 2 nights and had a great time! The hotel is in a traditional and authentic Newari style building, which is well renovated. Our heritage room had a fantastic view on the Annapurna range, which we enjoyed tremendously early morning from the bed!
The rooms are small, but nice and the bathrooms are good. The rooms are located in various parts of the building, accessible through stairs and corridors and the doors are low, so you have to mind your head all the time. Power cuts are quite normal, so when it gets dark you have to wear a torch (provided by the hotel) all the time.
Food is great and freshly prepared. Weather permitting you can enjoy your meals and breakfast on the small terrace, overlooking the valley and the mountains.
The service is perfect and we really enjoyed the hospitality of the manager, who is also an experienced naturalist and took us out for two great hikes.
Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the mountains
