“Good Hotel for ski holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

We booked this hotel independently of ski holiday operators and were well satisfied. Large room with mountain view - very clean and comfortable. Helpful and friendly staff. Large helpings at meal times with good range of food at breakfast buffet and evening meal, typically, of salad buffet, soup or pasta dish, meat or fish course and then a choice of sweets (e.g. cake/studel/parfait, or ice cream or fruit salad). Hotel has infrequent ski bus from outside door to steep run down to St Christiana or to Hotel Oswald in centre of Selva and connecting to other villages and main lifts in Selva, or you can walk to main bus service and centre of town (about 5-8 minutes away). Good centre for Sella Ronda and other ski runs in Val Gardena.

The PIneta cannot be faulted for the accommodation and food. The rooms were very clean, large enough and the shower was powerful and hot.
The food was basic but plenty of it. The buffet breakfast and the salad bar in the evening provided something for most people.

The staff in the hotel were friendly and very helpful.

On the down side our room was very noisy. When guests in any of the adjoining rooms decided to wake up, so did we. Whether we wanted to or not. The noise from the adjoining rooms and corridor made it impossible to sleep once people were moving about. We had a 'screaming toddler being chased and shouted to by the mother' unbooked alarm call most days, very novel but not appreciated. Perhaps best not to go here during school holidays as the screaming and running made it difficult to sit in the hotel after dinner as the bar area is quite small.

The location of the hotel meant a 20 minute walk to the nearest ski lift. This could be viewed as a warm up to a days skiing but after a few days it wears thin. There is a ski bus stop outside the hotel.

To end on a positive note, the hotel provided a wonderful New Years Eve Dinner, the staff were marvellous.

Room Tip: Do not visit during school holidays

La Pineta is not close to the Cimpanoi lift station. Walking on ski boots will take 15-20 minutes to get to the lift station, so make sure you are equipped with Cat-track or equivalent. Ski bus stop is right outside of the hotel though. The room was nice and big for an alpine resort hotel for the price. Breakfast was always plentiful. Do not expect English breakfast fried bacon or fried eggs: Selva is not in the UK. Half board guests face a menu every morning. The menu could be in German, Italian or English. As usual, translation does not do justice to the food, especially if one based the choice on the English menu. Food was of good quality, but do not expect burgers or fish fingers. Often the waiters bring extra food! The waiters were always smiling and helpful. The bar had weizenbier from a barrel, which was very nice.

The hotel La Pineta was a joy to stay in-very welcoming, traditional style for this region, good size rooms, warm and comfortable beds, you will get a good nights sleep-nice and quiet location in the bottom part of the town, short leisurely walk to the Ciampinoi gondola station in the mornings. We had a good sized twin room, plenty of storage place and decent sized bathroom/shower-plenty of hot water and clean towels, rooms were cleaned and beds made up every day.
The service we received was excellent-soon as we arrived we were made welcome, all the staff worked extremely hard and nothing was too much trouble, the food was excellent and plenty of it, the breakfast buffet was great and it set you up for the day - breads-meats-cheeses-cereals-fruits-yogurts-coffee-tea and juices - you will not go hungry.
At breakfast you tick off what you want on the menu for the evening meal and there is a good choice-soups-pasta-meats-fish-cheese dishes-one of us in the group is a vegetarian and that was no problem, they said write down what you would like and there it was at dinner-good wine list too
All in all this was a great stay and i would go this hotel again. Selva is a great place to ski and this hotel was a little gem-cannot fault it.

I too having read some of the reviews prior to arrival was a little apprehensive. However, as with other reviewers we were also more than pleasantly surprised on arrival. The hotel itself is charming, spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Our room had been refurbished to a very high standard compared to some similar tariff hotels we have stayed in. Others in our group were in rooms yet to be updated however these were also more than adequate, being more traditionally furnished rather than actually in need of renovation. The rooms were of a very good size with more than adequate storage space and comfortable beds. We had a decent sized bathroom with shower cubicle/good strong shower, fresh towels and toiletries as needed and plenty of hot water. We also a a decent sized balcony with table and chairs and rooms were cleaned and made up every day. This is a family run hotel and the service we received was excellent - everyone was extremely friendly and accommodating, from reception staff to the dining room/waiting staff to the bar staff. I personally feel that all the staff worked very hard to build rapport with the guests - nothing was too much trouble. As per the previous review the food was excellent and caters very well for vegetarians as we experienced. You literally tell them what you want at breakfast and its there at dinner and you get plenty. This is by far the best dining experience I've had on similar and more expensively tariffed ski holidays - good wine list too and the apple strudel was amazing. The location of the hotel is fine - just a short walk - shorter than I was expecting actually, slightly uphill, from the square/bus stop at the bottom of town. However the walk is fine even in ski boots. From the square at the bottom of town, Hotel Oswald, you can hop on the regular ski buses to either the Ciampinoi or Dantercepies gondolas. There is also a bus which runs past the hotel which will take you down to the square, Hotel Oswald. Bus pass 7euros for the week available from the hotel. We also used the pass to travel by bus to Santa Christina and Ortisei - efficient/easy - short journey - hop on outside Hotel Oswald. In Ortisei which connects you to the Alp De Suisi ski area there is also a public swimming pool, massage centre etc. which I was advised by a user is very good. Selva itself is a beautiful little village with all the usual amenities. We sampled the bars - good apres ski - be prepared to play party games - very tyrolean !!! We didn't sample the restaurants as the food in the hotel was so good. All in all for hotel/Selva - excellent location. As for the ski area itself its easy to see why this area of the dolomites is a Unesco World Heritage site - it is beautiful. the Sella Ronda circuit is a must - but set of early to avoid the lift queues. In summary I would highly recommend the area and the hotel and would definitely return myself. This would also be an excellent stay for spring/summer/autumn walking and other mountain activities.
