“Lovely hotel near the ski slopes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Pralong over the Christmas week. It was an expensive stay as it was "high season" and we were required to take half board (breakfast and dinner) but the price was justified by the high quality of the meals and the excellent service, especially in the dining room. a
All of the staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Our room was comfortable and spotlessly clean, with a view of the ski runs, and the dining and reception rooms have been recently and tastefully upgraded. Breakfasts were plentiful and varied, and dinners consisted of five gourmet courses, with several choices for each course, served by waiters in black tie. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony: although these rooms overlook the main road, the mountain views are l...

Stayed @ Hotel at beginning of September on walking trip. Food was excellent, hotel was spotlessly clean. Staff were extremely friendly. Location of hotel was more than adequate for our purposes. If one was looking for nightlife then Orthesia may be a better location, however, we were extremely happy with our choice of Hotel and Village.

Room Tip: We had requested a full bath rather than just a shower and were accommodated with same. Also had a b...

We have just spent our honeymoon at the Hotel Pralong, and what a wonderful time we had. The Pralong is ideally located about 5 min from the cable car ( last reviewer said 13 minutes, they must have walked very slowly) We had a very warm welcome from all of the Denicolo family, and all the staff were very friendly & professional.
The room was extra specially prepared for us, with some very lovely touches for our honeymoon, the view from the balcony was stunning.
Having walked around Selva, it would be very difficult to choose another hotel with a better setting. As its a small valley, the road passes most of the hotels, & we didn't find it disturbing at all. It is not overlooked by other hotels, many in the centre of the town are.
The food at the hotel was FANTASTIC. I require a gluten free diet, & this was very well catered for in all respects, even wiping down the toaster for me & refreshing my rolls at breakfast, so I could have some lunch. The choice of foods at breakfast was large, & there was a choice at dinner of the first & main course.

Walking from here is very easy, we found the Val Gardena card great, a real saving, & made it so much easier to jump on & off buses & cable cars without having to worry about the language barrier & fiddling around for change.

We would like to say a big thank you to the Denicolo family for such a wonderful welcome. & helping to make our honeymoon very special. If we are ever back in Selva we would most definitely return to the Hotel Pralong.
Many many thanks
Christine & Andy Oakes

Room Tip: We had room 34 a very comfortable & decent size room with shower & fantastic view

Don't bother looking up the location of Hotel Pralong on Google Maps. Instead of being to the west of town, the correct location is 1km to the southeast of the town centre on the SS242 - the main road towards Plan and Plan de Gralba. Unlike Ortisei and St Christina, Selva doesn't have a by-pass, which means that a lot of traffic goes right past Hotel Pralong and other accommodations on the main road. It's something to bear in mind if you're a light sleeper.

The walk to the Ciampinoi cable car takes 13 minutes, and it's a further five minutes to Hotel Oswald and the supermarkets. For a pleasing alternative to the main road, you can use a paved footpath which passes behind the Hotel Pralong, The path is accessible via a flight of steps from the hotel garden.

Pralong is a comfortable hotel built in the early 1970s and run efficiently by its friendly owners, the Denicolo family. Most of the team speak good English. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean, with an Austrian-style double bed. The bathroom had a bathtub with a shower attachment, rather than a proper shower. There was also a bidet. Hot water was in plentiful supply. As our room was on the corner of the building, we were fortunate enough to have a large double-sided balcony with nice views of the Sassolungo mountain range.

There's supposed to be internet coverage throughout the hotel. In reality we found the only usable signal was in the corridor on the second floor. The hotel has various 'wellness' facilities in the basement including a sauna, but we made no use of these.

Dinner (7.30-8.30pm) typically consisted of a salad buffet starter, followed by a further four courses - all prepared with great attention to detail and beautifully presented. This is the sort of food you would expect at a four-star hotel. Sadly (for me, anyway), pizzas and hearty main course pasta dishes are not part of this fine dining regime, and at 20 Euros a bottle, wine is not exactly a bargain.

In the morning, the first-rate breakfast buffet (7.30-10am) was well stocked with cereals, yogurts, cakes bread, ham and cheese.

Hotel Pralong is a member of the Selva Active scheme. Ask the reception staff to give you a green membership card. You can take this to the tourist office (just beyond the Champinoi cable car) and book onto the daily guided walks and activities at no charge. However, where the walks involve public transport or a cable car ride, you need to pay for those yourself at the time of departure.

The hotel's membership of Selva Active also entitles you to buy a Val Gardena Card, which offers unlimited use of cable cars in the Selva, St Christina and Ortisei area plus most public transport across the whole of South Tyrol. The cost is 82 Euros for six days. It's well worth doing some homework in advance and deciding whether you're likely to get your money's worth.

After much number crunching, we decided to buy the Val Gardena Card and organised our walks to make the maximum use of lifts, cable cars and buses - finally racking up well over 100 Euros worth of travel. We were even able to use the card for a day out in Bolzano travelling on buses, regional train, the Renon cable car and the historic electric railway from Oberbozen to Klobenstein - gateway to the famous Earth Pyramids.

If you want a card giving unlimited use of buses but not lifts, the tourist office sells the South Tyrol Mobilcard at 28 Euros for a week, or the Museumobil card for 32 Euros, which additionally gets you into 80 museums across the province. A great idea if the weather's too bad for walks.

Room Tip: Room 23 on the first floor has a large corner balcony with good views of Sassolungo.

We recently went on a walking holiday in Selva, Italy organised through Inghams. We stayed at the Hotel Pralong. The Pralong is a very welcoming, family run hotel, and the food is excellent. A big thank you to the Di Niccolo family and staff for making our stay a really enjoyable one. Would recommend it.

We are just back from our first stay at the Hotel Pralong. It is a beautiful, family run hotel in the dramatic Dolommites. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the food was first class. we cannot remember being better looked after.

We had a really enjoyable stay at this hotel right at the end of the skiing season. The family Denicolo were very friendly and welcoming, and answered all our questions. The room was of adequate size, clean and pleasantly furnished. We had a bath (shower head but no shower door or curtain), while our son and daughter had a shower in their ensuite bathroom (but no bath) - this wasn't a problem for us.

The restaurant meals were excellent - we've stayed at two other hotels in the Dolomites on five previous holidays but this was definitely the highest standard (not that the others were at all bad). If you include the salad (with variations such as lasagne or grilled mediterranean vegetables) then there we five courses each night - no choice for antipasti but a choice of three first (pasta/soup) course and usually two main courses. Then a choice of three desserts. The waiter and waitress were extremely polite and courteous, and nothing seemed to be too much trouble (for example my daughter had two puddings more than once because she couldn't decide - although there was always more than we could eat).

The skiing advice from Christian was really helpful - we had an expedition to Lagazuoi (called The Hidden Valley by the British package companies - they charge for a coach, but we skied there and back at no extra cost). We also finally managed to do Marmolada (the highest glacier in the Dolomites, I think). Christian's advice and guidance helped persuade my rather cautious wife we could safely do it.

The nearest piste and lift is less than 100m away, but while we were there the chairlift was closed all week due to avalanche risk. The piste down from the top of this lift is a red and not suitable for beginners. However we used the riverside path to ski down to the "Glass Bridge" and a short walk across the road to the Costabella lift. It is possible to ski down the nearby piste but it ends in amongst the nursery slopes and you have to negotiate two button lifts to reach the Ciampinoi gondola. Given the slushy state of the snow in the village at the end of the season we liked being on the uphill side of town, anyway.

We would definitely like to come back - even perhaps in the summer!

Room Tip: We were on the front (road side) of the hotel on the second floor, but we never noticed any noise. T...
