I would hae to say I totally agree with everything Wendy had to say.. tho.our room was more than adequate for two tho...and bed linen was changed as needed....
Our only problem was the unfreindliness of some of the the other guests... what does it take to smile and say hello to folk you see every day for almost two weeks....I just dont get that....but that is not a fault of the Hotel... you would get that any where...but we do let ourselves down as a nation .......we were sat beside a lovely young couple at meal times, who we got to know really well over the two weeks we were there and we did meet some other nice folk too.

Sometimes the area around the pool became a bit cramped for space and on our last day we we re unable to get a space at all by the pool...so get down early to secure a space lol lol.

But all in all a great time clean freindly and the food sooooooo good....

We have just returned from spending 2 weeks at the Florida Hotel.
Before leaving home, I had read all the reviews and begun to wonder why I had booked at all.

On arriving at the hotel we were ushered to the dining room for a meal, as it was around 11pm this was most welcome (although we didn't expect pork and mash in Italy).

Next came the room. We were a party of 4, cramped into one room that was not big enough to hold 4 beds, added to this was a small balcony that could only hold 2 people. Rooms are not air conditioned and a fan will cost you 3 euro a day. We found a shop in Piano de Sorrento that sold brilliant fans for 18 euro.

Right, now for the good stuff.

Regardless of the food not really being what was expected in Italy, everything was edible. Pasta was served as a starter and the potions were a meal in themselves. You order the day before, from a choice of 3 starters and 3 main courses. Breakfast is continental. Lunch can
be bought at the hotel and is the cheapest price around, with a margerita pizza only 3 euro and pasta 5 euro.

The rep is Janie, she is very helpful and helped me organise a surprise birthday cake for my husbands 40th.

Travelling around Sorrento and the surrounding areas is cheaper done by yourself. A bus ticket (bought at the tobacconists) is only 1 euro
and that is valid for 60 minutes from getting on the bus and validating it. Train tickets are 1.80 euro and stops at all stops from Sorrento to Naples (including Pompeii)

If visiting Pompeii and Herculanean with children, take your British passports and the children will get in free. It is 11 euro for adults, but get a guide when you get there, without one you will just wander aimlessly (guides are from around 10 euro per adult). Amazing places, Pompeii is huge.

You can get to most places from Sorrento or Marino Picolo (the harbour). We booked a mini cruise (green cruise) from Marino Picolo and it was the worse day of my life. The cruise goes to Ischia, but you get hardly any time off the boat and the day starts at 8.50am and doesn't end until 6.30pm. Unless you are a seasoned sailor give this one a miss.

Tuesday evening is entertainment night at the hotel. You eat around the pool with a guy playing soft music. Later the music is changed and the kids get a chance to dance (there is only a few English records though). Around 11.30 to Midnight it is pool time. You will have to run or hide if you don't want to get wet.

The friendliness of the staff varies. Pepe is brilliant and on his day off everything is in chaos. Eugenio, the barman is nice and is great to look at as well. Michel is a bit sleazy. The owner is miserable and doesn't speak much English, his son appears to be following in his footsteps. Janie the rep is great.

Although the Florida is small, this means that people tend to speak more. We had a brilliant holiday in the end and met some fantastic people. I would even go as far as to say, I might even consider returning at some time.

Sorrento and Sant Agnello are along busy roads. If you think English roads are bad, you haven't seen anything yet. To add to this are the narrow pavements, which are partially blocked with trees and messed by dogs. Anyone with small children and prams should be made aware of this before travelling.

Anyone looking to go, don't let the reviews put you off. The views you will see and the experience will be with you for life.

To conclude, a good holiday, enjoyed by all. (I even managed to put on 5lb in weight).

I have just returned from the hotel florida as part of a party of 6 people. I would firstly like to say what a wonderful place sorrento and its surronding area is, and I would recommend anyone thinking about visiting this part of Italy to do so. The only downside to the resort is there are few beaches, and they're mostly shingle type and expensive to get on (minimum 10euros including sunbed).
As for the hotel, it is decidely average at best. It claims to be a 3* but it really isnt, think of this as a 2* and you would be much closer to the mark. The rooms were ok, but we didnt get what we booked (pool view) and watch out as you may get the 'basement' rooms if you book a standard room. There were no plugs either, accept for one in the bathroom and one high on the wall for the TV! But at least the rooms were clean and cleaned daily. The pool was ok & clean, though there could have been a few more sunbeds. And on one day, it turned my white trunks green! But that aside, it was clean and pleasent enough. The food was very poor for breakfast, just a few rolls cheese and ham along with some juices, coffee and tea and packaged toast. Though they did invest in a electric toaster on the day we left! I think I managed to get hot milk for the coffee at breakfast on one occasion only. Evening food was not really of Italian nature, more typical english affair (such as chicken and chips). It was served to table and sometimes there were long waits between courses. But everything that was served was just about edilble, bar the wafer thin fried fish! And one other thing, get breakfast early as they dont like to finish on the dot past the allowed times. Staff at the hotel were in the main part ok, especially the cleaner who was very nice and some of waiters you could have a joke with.

All in all this was a lovelly holiday, so much so that not even the shortcomings of the hotel could ruin it. I do get the feeling if the hotel & its staff tried that little extra with the food, & stopped acting like 'the management' then it could actually be a decent place to stay.

First time in italy, so didnt know what to expect, the hotel Florida compares well with other 3* hotels, and the fact that guests at the 2 hotels either side chose to use the Florida gives a good account for it. Beds sleep either 2 or 3, with ample clothes space, and a safe in the room but no air con ( 3 euros a day to hire a fan). Continental breakfast self serve with plenty of food, and on our last day they bought a new toaster!. Choice of food in the evening, chosen the previous day, again if you want more then ask. Waiters and staff are very friendly. Bar shuts at midnight, but may appear closed if there is no one there just ask at reception if you want a drink and they will open the bar.
The only downside is that the pool is deep! About 1.5 metres in the shallow end to 3 metres in the deep end.
The beach is about 800 metres away, 400 horizontal and about 400 vertical! You pay to go on the beach, so ask how much before hand, appears about 20 euros a day, plus lounger and parasol.
The walk into Sorrento is about 20 minutes, and if you dont want to brave the main road, go down the hill and turning left, will take you to the first square which you can then walk through or continue on that road to the Marina Piccolo.
Most trips are easy to sort out yourself, we went to Rome, Capri, Pompeii and Heraculaneum by ourselves. The graffitti train (Circumvesuviana) is very cheap, and the Eurostar from Napoli to Rome is very quick ( 66 euros return each). When in Rome, book a sightseeing coach trip so that you can hop on and off to see the sights, and you wont have to stand still in an overcrowded metro gripping your baggage or camera tightly so that it doesnt get stolen.
A final tip, go to the information offices, ( an i in a circle ) and get a map, they are all free.

We booked the Florida understanding it to be a welcoming, small, family-run hotel. Our welcome was poor; ushered straight down to dinner with no opportunity to even get freshened up and upon returning to reception our bags were still where we had been told to leave them. When showed to our room we were left struggling with our cases down steps as the man from reception surged off ahead.
Our room was clean but terribly disappointing. The brochure states that all rooms have a balcony-as described by the other reviewer we were below ground so our "balcony " was tiny and built into a wall. The room felt dark and dungeon-like while others were lucky enough to have large balconies overlooking the pool; those people with children it appeared!
The dining room is also below ground and depressing and if you go as a couple you have to share a table for all your meals. The meals were poor quality and the service felt like the staff couldn't really be bothered.
The pool area is nice though it was full of screaming children, something we weren't led to expect, thinking it a more couples-focussed hotel. I think the Florida could be a good holiday if you are lucky with your room and don't mind mediocre food as it is fairly inexpensive compared to many in the area but our holiday ended up costing us a fortune as we were so disappointed by the non-authentic Italian food that we ate out almost every night.

  • Disliked — Our room, the food.

We stayed at the Florida Hotel in Sorrento for a week and found the hotel to be exactly as it says - a small family run establishment. The hotel is spotlessly clean although the furnishings are very simple and basic. There is a good choice of food each evening although we found the staff were not very friendly. Our booking showed a pool view room. To view the pool we had to stand on a chair and look over a wall!! The room was in the basement and our terrace was built into a blank wall. This made our room very gloomy although it did keep cool. We would have much preferred a ground or first floor room so that we could have sat and looked at the pool and orange lemon grove. There is nothing much in San Agnello and the hotel is more like a mile from the centre of Sorrento which is not a very easy walk with traffic and obtacles on pavements. If you want to see more of Sorrento we would recommend staying somewhere nearer the centre of the city.

  • Disliked — The distance from the centre of Sorreno

For anyone who is wondering whether or not to stay here - what are you waiting for!? I was very sorry to see the bad reviews Hotel Florida has got on here - me and my boyfriend went last summer and loved every second!
When we checked in we were given the key for room 101 so were a bit dubious at first, but we were led through lemon trees to our little room at the back of the hotel and all doubts were soon gone! We had our own mini garden and terrace with chairs. Our room was like a chalet type thing with french doors onto our terrace, really lovely.
There is also a little orchard with MORE lemon trees and lots of tables and chairs where you can sit and chill with a beer or glass of wine in the shade when the Italian sun becomes too much.
The pool area is also great, although I do agree with past reviewers that children splashing can be quite annoying! The lunch menu is delicious, something like 5 euro for a full pasta lunch with breads etc. We spent a couple of days barely leaving the hotel, just chilling by the pool and reading in the orchard.
The staff were great, especially Pepe! Really friendly and chatty. It is quite a small hotel so everyone gets to know eachother quite well, which is nice.
Regarding entertainment, there were a couple of nights when a band came to play I think and there was a big meal, but we weren't really into that sort of thing and didn't go so I can't comment on the standard! I think it's important to remember that Hotel Florida is a small family-run hotel, not a chain hotel in Benidorm, so entertainment is not exactly going to be fireeaters and circus performers!
There are a few lovely bars and restaurants about 5 minutes walk from the hotel, especially La Terraza where we went a few times - it has fantastic views over Sorrento bay and amazing ice cream! Sorrento is easily within walking distance, but if you're too lazy there is a bus stop literally across the road. From Sorrento you can go to Pompeii or Capri no problem - it is MUCH cheaper to do this yourself rather than through a tour operator, it's only a matter of getting a ferry or train.
I suppose the biggest weakness of the hotel would be it's dinner menu - we only ate in the hotel once as we preferred to explore the local restaurants - but the choice seemed quite limited and not that high standard.
The other thing I would say is that we went in high season, so I can't comment on how the service in low season as it seems to be quite different according to the other reviews.
Sorry for writing so much, but I really loved our holiday in Sorrento. It really is a beautiful place and we hope to go back again as soon as we can afford it!
