We had been here before and knew what to expect. As before, the staff were helpful, working very hard to please guests: the standard of the room was good and there was plenty of delicious food. In particular, the restaurant manager, Salvatore, was exceptional in making guests feel welcome: whether a early breakfast was needed for day trip or departure (6 am!) or late meals because of such trips or evening arrival, he was always there to personally organise this for you! This was the overall picture last time we came (June 2012) and also in this visit (October 2013). So everything was as before... except for one small lapse. A pack of chocolates - costing £5 (not a great amount in value) - was stored in the mini-bar because of the heat: the package was almost full, but on returning to it, we found three quarters of its contents to be missing. Although the product was not costly, we mentioned the incident to the management to avoid any future 'misunderstandings'.
The reaction to this was that the hotel manager said she would speak to the room maid, but we subsequently received no feedback whatsoever: however, after this, two members of restaurant staff were, strangely, very frosty towards us (for example, bottles of water and wine ordered were abrupty dumped on the table and these staff members quickly departing without speaking - for all other guests, wine was poured and, for fresh bottles, the guests invited to taste it). It was bad enough that no explanation or apology was ever received from the management about the chocolates, but the unacceptable way it had been dealt with had obviously escalated the matter in some way amongst the restaurant staff. (We don't think the room maid - with whom we had always enjoyed a cheery relationship - was responsible. So was it the restaurant staff member who daily checked the mini-bar? We would never know.) The way that this whole episode was handled - that is, very, very badly - could potentially have spoilt our stay at the Alpha.
Would we go there again, though? Most certainly!
Go as high up as possible - the sound of people above moving furniture in the room and on the balcon...
