“Hotel, restaurant and management”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

We had been here before and knew what to expect. As before, the staff were helpful, working very hard to please guests: the standard of the room was good and there was plenty of delicious food. In particular, the restaurant manager, Salvatore, was exceptional in making guests feel welcome: whether a early breakfast was needed for day trip or departure (6 am!) or late meals because of such trips or evening arrival, he was always there to personally organise this for you! This was the overall picture last time we came (June 2012) and also in this visit (October 2013). So everything was as before... except for one small lapse. A pack of chocolates - costing £5 (not a great amount in value) - was stored in the mini-bar because of the heat: the package was almost full, but on returning to it, we found three quarters of its contents to be missing. Although the product was not costly, we mentioned the incident to the management to avoid any future 'misunderstandings'.
The reaction to this was that the hotel manager said she would speak to the room maid, but we subsequently received no feedback whatsoever: however, after this, two members of restaurant staff were, strangely, very frosty towards us (for example, bottles of water and wine ordered were abrupty dumped on the table and these staff members quickly departing without speaking - for all other guests, wine was poured and, for fresh bottles, the guests invited to taste it). It was bad enough that no explanation or apology was ever received from the management about the chocolates, but the unacceptable way it had been dealt with had obviously escalated the matter in some way amongst the restaurant staff. (We don't think the room maid - with whom we had always enjoyed a cheery relationship - was responsible. So was it the restaurant staff member who daily checked the mini-bar? We would never know.) The way that this whole episode was handled - that is, very, very badly - could potentially have spoilt our stay at the Alpha.
Would we go there again, though? Most certainly!

Stayed here beginning October. The Hotel staff are very good from reception to bar, even the maids were polite, but the staff in the restaurant are brilliant, so friendly, helpful & quite funny!
The Hotel itself is about 25 minutes walk into Sorrento but its a pleasant walk.
The pool at this time of year was mostly shaded by trees & for most of the day there is only a quarter of the pool in the sun, shame really, but I'm sure in summer this is not the case! At least it was quiet with only 2 or 3 other couples around at one time.(Not that we spent a lot of time sat round the pool)
The food, Breakfast was a good choice, & the evening meal we really enjoyed there was a very good choice of all 3 courses & they were hot & tasty, also we never had the same thing twice in a week! We also enjoyed the Gala evening which was a set meal but a lovley change.
The rooms are a little dated & could do with a make over also the bed on the side I slept had a huge dip in it so wasn't very comfortable... That was the only down side of the Hotel but didn't spoil my holiday in any way.

This review is quite overdue (I had to select Now 2012 to post it but we actually stayed here on our honeymoon in June 2011!) I have meant to write it for a long time as I promised I would. This hotel was a little disappointing because it was our honeymoon and the room wasn't as great as we had hoped. The view wasn't great (the back of some farm buildings and mountainside rather than the sea) and the room seemed faded. However we did get some bubbly on arrival and the service was great. In the evenings & at breakfast the welcome we got was lovely. Salvatore was a brilliant host and really made the stay for us. Lying by the pool wasn't that relaxing as there were some roadworks going on (the hotel is on a T-junction) however these are probably complete now. We also felt a little young to be at this hotel, as the other guests were quite a bit older than us. The location was ok. It's quite a long walk to Sorrento if you are planning on that. The trains ran very regularly and also we were off the beaten track a little, which made it less touristy. There was a lovely Enoteca at the top of the road past the train station in the centre of Sant'agnello by the main road, and we went there most evenings. We didn't really venture into Sorrento as we should have. Partly because the holiday was so expensive, so we didn't feel we could justify the spend on another meal when we were half board. The food was good from what I recall. They did a brilliant spaghetti pomodoro and Salvatore talked my husband through exactly how to make a good one. He was just great. In the days we took trips to Herculaneum and Pompeii, Sorrento and Amalfi coast. The transport was really easy and reasonably priced. I think on reflection we'd have preferred to go to Tuscany and get more for our money for our one honeymoon, but it was a lovely area to visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view or sea view.

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday at the Hotel Alpha.
Having read previous trip advisor reviews of the hotel, we were optimistic about what to expect.
We arrived and were shown to our rooms, which were in the villa annex part of the hotel. There was a lovely view from the balcony from both rooms, mainly of mountainous landscapes.
The rooms were pleasant. Most of the hotel guests spent their days out on trips and so not much time was spent in the room anyway. Personally I found that the room comfort was fine, however, my parents did feel that their bed was quite uncomfortable. The room cleaning service was excellent.
The pool area was lovely, with fruit trees surrounding it. The fruit trees did cause some trouble later on in the day if you wanted to sunbathe, as they cast shadows over most of the sun beds.
The actual pool was quite cold and it was a bit of a struggle to be brave enough to get in! I’m sure that it would have been nicer a bit earlier on in the summer when the temperature was higher!
We found all of the staff to be very helpful and friendly, particularly the restaurant staff, including Rocco, Luigi and of course... Salvatore!
The food was lovely, particularly the pasta and seafood dishes. There was a large selection and Salvatore was happy to oblige any specific requests that we had. The starter was always quite filling and so we were usually almost full before the main course!
The restaurant and bar areas of the hotel were always spotlessly clean.
We were able to walk into Sorrento from the hotel and while the pavements are quite narrow with some traffic, it is possible to reach Sorrento by foot. You could also get the bus to Sorrento from just outside the hotel and the train station was just up the road if you wanted to catch a train.
There wasn’t any evening entertainment, other than Neapolitan music on a Sunday night, but this suited us as we were usually tired from trips during the day!
Overall, we had a great holiday at the Hotel Alpha and would definitely return.
Thank you for a lovely stay!

This was our first trip to Sorrento and chose this hotel because of the reviews. It more than lived up to our expectations. The hotel is elegant and comfortable, the staff helpful and friendly and the service and food good. I have two negative points to make:- the air con is not on in October and the nights can still be warm and as with many hotels in this area there is some road noise until midnight and it starts again about 6.30am. If we returned to this area I would definitely go back to the Alpha.

Room Tip: Choose the main hotel and not the villa.

Stayed here on a 4 day break and was slightly disappointed after reading such wonderful reviews.

The rooms were big and basic, we had a room with a good size balcony which had a table and chairs. The beds were narrow and not very comfortable. The TVs in the rooms are tiny and if you want to use the mini bar in your room for your own stuff you will get charged. We got one towel each and the hand towels etc look like cut up bed sheets?!?!? Would of laos of been nice to have tea/coffee facilities in the room.

The food at the hotel was good, warm and the service was quick. The staff in the dining room and bar were all kind and friendly, reception staff were ok apart from a couple which when asked questions we were just grunted at!

There isn't anything to do on the evenings no entertainment at all, and most people went to bed by 10pm, there is Wi-Fi free at the hotel but connection was hit and miss in the bedrooms.

The hotel is situated about 35-40 mins walk to Sorrrento itself but there is a bus stop outside the hotel which will take you into the main square for e1.20 each way. Also the train station is approx. 5 mins walk away and again is cheap to use. Like most people we made our own way to places, we visited Pompeii which cost e4.40 return on the train which took around 30 mins (the entrance to the site is just right of the station a few seconds walk) and cost e11 to get onto the site we didn't do a tour as we took a decent guide book which had all the information we needed. Herculaneum again is the same cost of train and to enter and takes around 45 mins on the train (the site is just down the hill form the station around 10 min stroll again we had a guide book and didn't need a tour. We also visited Capri on the ferry which is around 30 mins away for two people return was a cost of e70, we found Capri expensive and the people not very helpful or friendly.

I would say this hotel is more of a 3*, we did enjoy our short stay as we saw some interesting places as this is what brought us to the area however I wouldn't say this was your usual holiday destination and I think I would of struggled to stay here a week
