“Great for Our Large College Group”

We stayed in the dorms which were very clean and comfortable! Laura at the front desk was very helpful when we booked a boat tour to Capri- something everyone should do! Not super impressed with the dinner, but the breakfast was great. The property itself is a bit rundown, but very homey and comfortable, and we felt the value was excellent. Overall a great stay! Will stay closer to Sorrento next time though.

We just got back from a trip to the Amalfi Coast and to Mami Camilla’s cooking school and accommodation (www.mamicamilla.com). The entire Longo family was amazing at making our stay wonderful. They are attentive to every need and plan every conceivable trip or outing that you might want. Some people stay there just for the wonderful breakfasts and nice, low-cost rooms. They are easily accessible by train and bus and are close to the beach. They also have a wonderful cooking school on site, and serve amazing 4-5 course dinners to anyone who signs up before 6PM. The cooking classes, cheese making demonstrations, wine tasting, and olive oil tour were a highlight of our trip because we felt they gave us a glimpse into the real lives of the people of the Sorrento area. All their tours were hosted by friends of the family instead of commercial trips that are offered on line and in the tourist hotels. Best of all, we felt that the Longos took us in and treated us like family for the week that we were there. It was truly a unique travel experience for us – much more intimate than what we’ve experienced to date when travelling in Europe. So for all of you foodies please take a look at this wonderful little home away from home in the Sorrento area.
Sincerely,
Donna Fallon

Very small room - had a rustic feel. Bathroom facilities were basic - the shower and toilet were in a very small space. The sink was seperate from them and located in the room.

The hotel offers the opportunity to attend a cooking school, which looks fab! Unfortunately as we were only stopping over for one night we didn't take advantage of this.

Breakfast was good, a rather different selection of foods to choose from, as a lot of what was on offer was the food left over from the cooking school! I thought this was great as there was such a huge variety of foods to choose from.

This hotel is perfect for those who are on a budget and travelling. The atmosphere was good - guests happily sat round talking in the reception and outside area. Easy to make friends - at breakfast you sit on large tables with other guests.

20 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento.

This is the second time we have been to Italy. In 2005 we visited Rome, Florence and Venice plus side trips. The trip in July of this year was to see the Amalfi Coast and a cooking school for my wife at Mami Camilla, where we also had a room for a week. Mami Camilla was the best of all the B&B's and hotels we have stayed at during both trips to Italy. The customer service and breakfast, as well as the gourmet four course dinners, were nothing but outstanding. Laura and her sister Odelia, daughters of the owner, were very professional and always willing to help with questions, tours etc. Odelia makes the best Cappuccino's! Also Amanda, a student intern, was very helpful, The room was more than adequate for the price and we did not have any mold problems. Mr. Longo was a very good teacher as were the people he had trained to teach. If you love to meet people, eat gourmet Italian food or want to learh to cook Italian, this place is for you. Unlike CaperGal, we were able to pay our bill with a credit card at the end of our stay. I do think if you are just having a dinner and staying at another facility they prefer cash. We thank the Longo family and staff for making us a part of their family for a short time and would highly recommend their B&B and cooking school.

Overall I would definately recommend staying at Mami Camilla while visiting Sorrento.. I just wouldn't recommend staying in the dorms. We had a dorm which was shared with two long-term guests (both part of the cooking school so staying 2-3 months) and it felt like we were crashing in the flat of some friends of friends rather than paying guests at a hostel. The bathroom was lived in and consequently not that clean, we were warned by one if the long-tremors that the shower didn't drain well so have the tap only half on, if this had been the case for the last two months then why wasn't it fixed? The bathroom shelves full of the toiletries if the long-termers and towel rails occupied permanently. The air-con unit, although it worked, was so noisy we slept with ear plugs. The highlights though was the Capri trip they operate, I would recommend this to everyone as a must do, swimming in the white grotto was AWESOME. Also, the offer a four course dinner for €18 prepared by the cooking school... Also do this, the portions aren't huge but are plenty for sure and this is way cheaper than the majority of other restaurants in town. The location, 15min walk fro
Town was also great, away from the tourists, but close enough also. Final note, make sure you walk down to the coast just down the road, the view is stunning, nothing like a wine or beer and a stunning sunset not crowded at all!!

The first time I visited Mami Camilla was in June 2008 with a friend, we loved it so much we extended our stay. I then returned to Mami Camilla again exactly 3 years later with my boyfriend! Not much had changed in the 3 years except for the size of the garden!! We stayed for a week and experienced the extremely tasty Italian home cooking from the cooking school and the excellent boat trip to Capri run by the family. Mami Camilla's is kind of like a B & B but with added extras. The dinners at night are all around a big table with all the other guests so you get to chat to them (and sometimes make travel friends!). The breakfasts are similar but less chatter with the other guests (probably because it is breakfast and most people aren't so chatty in the morning!!). If you can tear yourself away from the Mami Camilla dinners, I would recommend the Inn Bufalito and also a visit to their shop if you like cheese and meats! I would also recommend the BEST gelati I have ever tasted! http://www.bougainvillea.it/ I would recommend the chocolate profiterole gelati and also the double chocolate fondant gelati! If you like chocolate, they are heaven! Back to Mami Camilla, if you want to experience the "real" Italy and "real" Italian food I would stay here!!

We stayed here for three nights as part of our honeymoon. I didn't realize until we got there that this is really more of a hostel than a hotel. That said - we got a private room with private shower for 72E/night, and it was comparable to all of the other places we stayed in Italy.

The first night we stayed for dinner. For 18E per person you just can't beat the price for an excellent meal. I highly recommend doing this at least once if you are a people person and like to make new friends. You eat family style at a big table and we met folks from Australia and the US. Breakfast is also served in this manner. Keepng in the family style, you even get leftovers from the night before as part of breakfast!

For the type of travellers that we are, this place was excellent. We like to be off the beaten path a little bit and meet new people. We're not so concerned with perfection either. This hotel is about a 15 minute walk from Sorrento on a much more quiet road than their main street. We got to meet some new folks and have our room to ourselves. Couple of notes:
- Our bathroom was a little moldy in the shower. It can be humid in this area and to me, it's just to be expected. It was nothing better/worse than we have at home, and they did clean it quite well in the areas you stepped in, etc. If this sort of thing bothers you, find a chain hotel.
- You absolutely need to pay in cash at the end of your stay - don't plan on using a card. Try to have close to the correct change. One of the daughters had to fish in her purse for us to get change! Again, just one of the charms/drawbacks of this type of operation.

We really enjoyed our time at Mami Camilla and would definitely recommend it, for the right kind of traveler!

Room Tip: Get a private room unless you like dormstyle bunks
