800 Euros for a suite that was antiquated, not yet updated and wallpapered in the most garish floral motif that your head spun while looking at it. Yhe building is old, the price outlandish and the pool facilities which would be beautiful if it were not dilipidated, cracked and not at all kepr up. My young daughter reported that when viewed with goggles from below that pool was dirty, things were growing underwater and she could see tool nails and skin on the pool floor. Yech! The town has more to recommend it than prior reviews suggested but in all this is a grande dame down on her luck.
Must have been a grand place at one time -- probably the worst hotel of the Leading Hotels of the World I've stayed at because the furniture is quite old and unspectacular and the hotel rooms are beginning to get run down, but the grounds and location are spectacular. There is a salt water pool (which wasn't very clean), but still a marvelous setting. Great location to break up the drive from Italy to South of France.
I have just spent 8 nights at this hotel with it's excellent 4 nights for the price of 3 offer, available on its website. I was a little unsure about visiting San Remo, having visited Portofino and Santa Margherita in the past, but had a super time. The hotel is without doubt the best thing about San Remo, although the town is a real italian town and quite lively. I was lucky enough to have a newly refurbished room and I would DEFINITELY recommend you request one of these when booking. I went for the basic category room and it was really great, very nicely furnished, huge bed, great marble bathroom etc. The rooms that have not been refurbished did not look up to 5 star standards. The pool was gorgeous, seawater and heated, the outside restaurant expensive but delicious. The staff throughout the hotel were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. A good hotel for couples and families alike with plenty of room by the pool not to feel cramped.
I am an event planner for my U.S.-based company and was sent to the Royal Hotel in September, 2005, for a site visit. The reviews on this page are all fairly accurate but let me add a couple of thoughts.
The Italian Riviera, unlike the French Riviera, is more quiet (i.e., no half naked teenagers dancing on tables) and more classic. There isn't a whole lot to do other than enjoy lovely weather, the beautiful ocean, fabulous sea food and lovely people. But what's wrong with that?
The Royal Hotel is a five star luxury hotel, by Italian standards. By U.S. standards, it's the equivalent of a Marriott (three to four stars). The hotel does have a 1950s, slightly dated feel. However, it also has a lot of pluses: a lovely, heated, salt water pool; easy access to the beach; complimentary breakfast buffet; consierge services, great location (right next to casino) and most importantly, a genuinely lovely staff. I'm intentionally saving the best for last: the Hotel has spectacular, magical views of the ocean and a ocean-view room is highly recommended.
For U.S. travelers, the Standard Double is a little small, approximately 250 square feet, and not furnished to my tastes (I prefer modern), but is clean and comes with a balcony perfect for sipping lemonchello and admiring the ocean. I spent many happy hours doing just that.
One other point worth noting. Sanremo is unique in the Italian Riviera for its casino (no great shakes compared with Las Vegas but still nice to have) and its shopping district (Sanremo, unlike other towns, has a surprisingly nice shopping district with some great clothing stores and restaurants).
If you're coming for a rest, The Royal Hotel is perfect in and of itself. If you're looking for activities, there's some nice towns within driving distance: Dolceacqua and Apricale. If you're looking for modern hotels, try Rapallo, but you may get bored. If nightlife is your bag, The French Riviera or, closer to Sanremo, Monte-Carlo and Nice, France, are best.
