“ONLY DOWNTURN WAS THE PIANIST AND COST OF DRINKS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2009

We have stayed at this hotel every year for many years and have yet to find any major (or minor) complaint with our stays. The rooms and service are exceptional as well as all the facilities offered, mostly free of charge. We have come to know the owner Signor Tonelli personally who one can see any time doing jobs around the hotel with the other staff and who is always without exception in the restaurant every evening making himself known to all the guests and is sufficiently fluent to converse with guests from most parts of Europe. However, we find with every passing year that the price of drinks including bottles of water are outrageously high and to be quite honest visit the nearby supermarket and buy them at a fraction of the cost and take them back to our room. Also without fail every year the pianist rolls out the same old music with hardly a new piece in his repertoire . Regardless of this I don't think you could find a better class hotel anywhere in the Lake \garda region.

What a great hotel. In 40 years of package holiday travel, this was the best hotel I have stayed in.
The food was outstanding. The variety on offer was amazing and I cannot believe that anybody could be critical of it. The evening meals in particular were of really good quality and the evenings of the gala dinners were quite an occasion.
The hotel owner was present every evening watching over things and that is a testament to the success of our stay.
It is true that the entertainment is slanted in favour of German guests but when Germans represent about 95% of the guests what do people expect? We were happy to sit in the corner of the bar with other Brits and natter amongst ourselves and drink beer.
The area around the lake is stunning. Contrary to the advice we were given, lake views can be had but only from the top (5th) floor. These can be requested in advance.
If possible fly in to Verona airport, Milan Linate or even Venice. Try to avoid Milan Malpensa as the transfer is about 4 hours.

Stayed for a week as part of a Riviera travel holiday and were not disappointed. The hotel was spotless with all amenities to ensure we had a good time. The rooms all had balconies and lovely bathrooms. Ours had close views of the mountains and the little chapel lit up high on the side at night. ( The only criticism was the noise from coach parties arriving late and the early morning refuse collections outside our room.) The food was varied and interesting with lots of choice. Every night we could choose something completely different from many courses and the wine was a reasonable price with the opportunity to have your bottle labelled and returned next night if not finished. The outside pool was still in use and for Britons used to colder seas at home appeared to be warm enough. We could walk easily in either direction from the hotel along the lovely well lit path. We enjoyed the free cocktails twice a week and the nightly music and appreciated the attendance of the owner. wW would certainly return again and Riva itself made an excellent centre for visiting many different areas. We particularly enjoyed boat trips on Lake Garda, visiting the Dolomites, Verona and Venice.

Stayed for a week whilst on touring holiday of Lake Garda region. Hotel was exceptionally clean, well serviced and run. Staff on the whole were friendly and helpful. The owner was on hand almost every day meeting and greeting. The one downside was the quality and range of food. Breakfast consisted of a buffet, same all week and a choice of bacon or scrambled egg (both good), fried eggs on demand and pancakes two days. Also oddly vegetables were on offer, carrots, cabbage and artichokes! No muchsrooms though. Limited breakfast and boring after one week. You choose dinner in the morning apart from three days of gala dinner twice and an Italian night. Buffet to start again very little change night after night and unexciting apart from everyday some excellent sliced beef (every day). Dinner was then followed by perhaps soup or vol au vent then a pasta course, a main course and a dessert. To much, frequently cold and at times quite unappetising. I intensly dislike having to choose my dinner at breakfast time and then being disappointed when it is served. A lot of food went back uneaten and comments with our group were very mixed. A pity as this side of things really let the hotel down. Entertainment was a singer playing an organ. Dull, repative and catered in the main to its German guests. Going in October meant that we were stuck at the hotel in the evening.

The Riva area has lovely surroundings. The views are great. If you are interested in sailing or wind surfing it would be a great location for this. There is some walking available in the area, too, and some of the villages (especially Limone) are attractive. Be aware that the public transport in the area is very unreliable, so private transport would be very helpful if looking to travel round much.

The hotel disappointed us greatly. The room we had was clean and functional but without much character. Unfortunately the bathroom had a broken shower fitting (repaired two days after being reported) and a broken extractor fan (not repaired despite being reported). The latter had probably been an ongoing problem, as the paintwork over the shower was flaking, so we had flakes of paint float down into the shower and onto the floor each day.

The food was not the best. Breakfast was okay, and the salad buffet each evening was quite good. But the rest of the evening menu lacked much imagination and the food was often of poor standard. When a hotel in Italy announces that one day in the week it will have "Italian night" food, that is not, in my view, a great sign!

If you are looking to use the free bikes that are meant to be available, note that there are around 18 bikes for over 500 guests, so you may well not get to use a bike.

On the plus side, the outdoor pool has great views of the surrounding mountains.

We wondered whether we had been foolish to book half-board just in case the food was not good but our concerns were blown away after the first dinner. We don't go to Italy to eat English food in English style and we thoroughly recommend this hotel. No-one needs to leave hungry from that dining room as there is a varied salad buffet every evening of which guests may eat as much as they wish before the rest of the meal. There are also various breads and rolls. Three more courses, or plates, then follow before dessert - none of these are huge but, if it were all on one plate, it would constitute a big meal! We have good appetites and were always full at the end of dinner.

Breakfast is also excellent with a good choice of breads, fruit and cereals. There are fruit juices, yogurts, cheeses, meats and hot dishes if required. One can choose tea, hot chocolate or coffee (or all three if desired!)

We found the staff very polite and friendly (but then we always treat others with respect and usually find it works both ways) - they were extremely hard-working, especially on the evenings of Gala dinners of which there were two during our week. The hotel owner was always around at dinner and helped to carve the huge pork joints at one Gala dinner.

The rooms were clean and comfortable and we had a stunning mountain view. If we have one complaint it is that the air-con had been turned off and our room was very warm during the night. However, this was alleviated somewhat by leaving the balcony door open (we are not youngsters but don't feel the cold).

We would certainly stay at this hotel again and recommend it to friends.

We have just returned from a rather nice holiday at the Hotel Savoy Palace in Riva on Lake Garda. The hotel is 4 star Italian, probably top end of 3 star Uk, and run by the Tonelli family who are very much in evidence. The hotels guests are mainly block booked international tours (lots of Germans) the age profile 50+.

The hotel is well appointed, roomy, has plenty of lifts and excellent views from the rooms on the upper floors. One very large restaurant and the food quite good for mass catering with a good choice. Breakfast is buffet style - but watch out for the Germans who descend like locusts and devour everything in sight - rather reminscent of the pigs on our farm yard at feeding time! Breakfast is from 7am to 9.30am - but don't arrive late because at 9.30am, on the dot, it is all cleared away.

There is lunch if you want it - but there is a wide variety in the many restaurants and bars in Riva. Afternoon tea and cakes is served at 4pm and there is a happy hour at the bar at 5pm to 6pm.

Dinner is at 7pm - but again stand back for the German stampede - especially their elbows as they race for the salad self service starter. The next 4 courses are waiter served - anti pasta, pasta, etc etc. Wines are reasonably priced about 15 Euros for a decent bottle - or 6Euros for a 1/2 litre caraffe of quaffable Italian plonk.

Coffee is self service in the bar area and where live music and 60's 'formal dancing' takes place - the Brits rush for that.
Once or twice a week there is a Gala Dinner with free cocktails with the Tonelli family (plenty of Germans in the bar that night) and a jazzed up meal to follow. Mr Tonelli likes to show off his 2 Ferraris on these occassions.

The hotel is well placed for touring the area and if you feel energertic there are wind surfing and sailing schools by the dozen in the resort. Ferry boats to all parts of the lake sail from Riva old town (20 minute stroll from the hotel) at regular intervals

With 2 nice pools (inside and out) the Tonellis seem to have cracked the problem of the Germans bagging the sun beds - you get 2 bathing towels in your room and if you lose one it costs 50 Euros - there are no towels left hanging around!

A couple of words of warning - the airconditioning is switched off on September 15th (by law we were told) - when we stayed at the end of September the temperature was in the high 20's to low 30's - you try sleeping in that without aircon. Its nice of the Italians to save the world - but have they never heard of carbon offset? I bet Berlisconi has aircon in his bedroom! So go there before Sept 15th.

The other thing is that its quite a way from the Venice Marco Polo Airport - it took us 4 hours from landing - so make sure you don't get a late flight!

All the staff are very friendly and helpful.
