“Excellent service and facilities with friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2009

My wife and I booked a hoilday via Inghams. It was fairly last minute - we paid £412 pp including flights from Gatwick to Verona, transfers to the hotel and half board. We'd upgraded to a room with a balcony and mountiain views as it only cost around £20 extra.

We hired a car as we wanted a bit of independence to visit the region. The journey took around and hour from Verona and the hotel was quite easy to find being signposted from te main road. The hotel was around 10 minutes walk from the centre This suited us fine as it was in a quiet area near to a vineyard an way from the hustle and bustle of the town centre.

The hotel was excellent. The first thing that struck us was the genuine friendliness of the member of staff at reception who checked us in very speedily. The room was large and more of a suite with a big comfortable bed (two twins pushed together) and with more than enough space for a sofa and large armchair. The room was on the third floor and had a balcony with with two chairs and views of the mountains, vineyards, the pool and the new spa centre. The room and bathroom were extremely clean. The bathoom was large with hot high pressure water at all times.

Breakfast was very good with a wide choice of foods such as cereals, yoghurts, toasts, cakes together wih hot food such sausage, bacon , egg, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Dinners were five course affairs and were really good. With a first course, second course, main course, selections of desserts and cheeses. The food had a home made
quality to it. The waiting staff were attentive, very polite, friendly and accommodating.

If you had any room left after breakfast a buffet lunch, again excellent, consisting of salads, cold starters and some hot food, was also thrown in.

The month we arrived a new spa centre had opened. It was housed in a purpose built wing with a large spa pool on the ground floor which contained many wonderful gadgets such a jacussi at one end, bed spas to lie in, a pool area and massage jets. There were comfortable wooden loungers to lie on and look out at the garden and outdoor pool.

Upstairs was a sauna centre with a classic wooden sauna, a turkish bath, a relaxation room and illuminated mulitcoured showers which sprinkeld you with scents.

The hotel also had a great little garden to sit in and relax undet the sun.

Riva is well placed for tours of the norh west of Italy. There are many cute small towns to visit and lots of walks to do. It is also a mountain biker centre with good terraine to bike around in.

I would highly recommend the hotel and the region if you want a relaxing slow paced holiday with stunning scenery.

I stayed in this hotel last week, as part of a group tour of Tuscany and lake garda. I could not fault this hotel,, service was excellent, and the meals were fantastic. I was travelling as a single person, and was the only one of my group to be given a room without a balcony, and it was fitted out for a disable person, I did ask for a room with a view and a balcony, but was told they had another group coming in,, ( I did not see them) as we were the only group there.
Other than that the hotel was fantastic, and I would not hesitate to recommend it. Other than not able to make an Irish coffee as requested by my friend, (no ingredients) but again I would recommend this hotel, and the staff were so friendly.....

We got married in Riva del Garda on the 8th Sept 08 and choose to stay at the Hotel Villa Nicolli and also choose to hold our wedding reception here for 46 guests. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left nothing was too much for any of the staff; from meeting with Luca the chef to discuss menus (which was 6 courses, plus the cake!! - all of it amazing!!), to Alessia the receptionist who took us searching for flowers on her day off!! Not to mention Ignazio, the head waiter who made our guests feel so welcome on the day... nothing was too much and the staff made us feel very much part of the family. Without the help of the staff from the Hotel Villa Nicolli, our day wouldn't have been as perfect as it was!!!

The hotel itself is set approx a leisurely 10mins walk from the town square, in a peaceful area set amongst vine groves, the perfect location, not too far from the main area and yet not too close. The food is plentiful and extremely tasty, and perfect wine from their very own wine cellar to match.

We will definately be returning to Riva del Garda and the Hotel Villa Nicolli, as I'm sure will many of our wedding guests.

  • Liked — Everything, but especially the staff, oh and the food and wine!!
  • Disliked — Nothing

We wanted to visit Riva and I used Tripadvisor to see the recommended hotels - Villa Nicolli really lived up to its reviews. This was the most relaxing holiday we'd had for a long time. The hotel's tucked away and so is quiet, but within easy walking distance of Riva. We really liked Riva itself - some of the towns to the south were completely packed with tourists but Riva wasn't as busy. It has lots of character and lots of lovely cafes/bars etc by the water's edge.

If you go to Villa Nicolli do go for the half board option - it's excellent value - but go to dinner early because some guests seem to be happy to take several helpings of dessert.

Overall, definitely a hotel I'd be happy to go back to.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2008

We stayed at the Villa Nicolli between 6th and 13th September and were very impressed by both the hotel and Riva.
We didn't arrive at the hotel until after the evening meal had been served and the staff were insistent on preparing some food for us which made us feel really welcome and helped us relax.
We had a room on the first floor at the back of the hotel and although the balcony wasn't quite what we had expected (it was fully surrounded being built into the restuarant roof) the views across the vineyard to the mountains made up for it though as they were spectacular.
The room and bathroom (modern and spacious) were spotlessly clean, in fact the hotel overall was the cleanest we have ever stayed in. The only negative I have about the room was that the air conditioning wasn't much cop. It was particularly hot the week we were there and it just didn't seem able to cool the room as much as we would have liked.
There has been plenty said about the restauant in the other reviews, but we really liked it. You are allocated a table for the entire stay which we liked as we were lucky enough to be surrounded by some lovely couples who we befriended. The food is a little fussy but beautifully presented and you do feel like you are eating in a top end restaurant rather than a hotel. If you like your deserts then it is probably best to eat no later than 7:30pm because as mentioned by other reviews they do get eaten quickly! There is also a cheese board and an ice cream freezer which were overlooked by a lot of the guests in their hurry to get some cake! The Sardinian cheese soaked in wine barrels was particularly good!
Breakfast was outside by the pool and had a good selection of hot and cold food. This switched to the restaurant on our last day as I guess the weather may not be suitable for eating out off season.
The Swimming pool is lovely and only ever had a few people in it. We weren't so keen on the new extension ( A Wellness centre that is not yet open) as it is not in keeping with the rest of the hotel and has resulted in less space to sunbathe around the pool. It may fit in better with its surrounds when it is furbished and opens next year.
It will take you about 15 minutes to walk into town, either through the back streets or along the busy noisy main road (neither route is that nice but both routes are flat) . Once you get into the town it is lovely, with lots of open squares bustling with restaurants and shops and with easy to use ferries that can take you to the other resorts around the lakes. Being on the north end of the lake you are looking at a 4 hour trip each way to reach towns on the south side of the lake so probably best to make alternative arrangements i.e. use the bus or an excursion. The lovely towns of Limone and Malcesine however are really easy to reach by boat.
There are some great walks around the area ranging from the gentle along the lake front to Torbole to many more strenouous walks in the surrounding mountains. A particularly nice walk is up to the Bastion which is a fortress that overlooks Riva and offers great views over the town.
Overall we were really impressed by the hotel and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for someone looking for a quiet relaxing break in quality surroundings.

We visited Villa Nicolli last week (23rd – 30th Aug. 2008). We had booked half pension (mezza pensione) in advance, that will say free dinners in the hotels restaurant. The food was good but the portions minimal (except the dessert standing table that was emptied every evening in a rush).

The real problem was the wine list with prices starting from over 20 euros even for ordinary wines that you can buy in the super mercato for about 3-4 euros. We had dinner 3 evenings and decided then to eat in the town and skip the hotel dinners. Firstly you pay about 200 euros for the half pension and then you have to pay approx. 25 euros for the wine bottle. Not good at all, not good.

The room was spacious and nicely decorated with, in our case, a big terrace on the second floor. Big bathroom, a functioning television, a small minibar, bathrobes and slippers makes the stay comfortable.

The breakfast was served by the pool. It was good and included the services of an omelette chef, but still quite ordinary.

The staff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is calm and little sleepy.

We had an early departure on Saturday morning at 5 o’clock and asked for a small breakfast (colazione) the evening before. The reception said it was no problem but the next morning we had more or less to wake up the night portiere to fix a cup of coffee, orange juice and croissants for us and 6 other early departing guests. Not good at all, not good.

On the whole, Villa Nicolli is a rather good hotel in walking distance from the old centre of the town. The 4 star rating is although too much, my rating would be 3 +. We have now visited Bardolino, Sirmione and Riva del Garda and of these three alternatives, Riva seems to be the best choice.

Rivas is more spacious and not crowded with tourists as Sirmione and Bardolino. We made a “battello daytrip” with the old ferries to Malcesine, which also seems to be a nice small town on the hillside.

Bon voyage!

We have just returned from an enjoyable week at Hotel Villa Nicolli and can recommend this hotel.

Positives were that the hotel was spotlessly clean, the rooms although a little small, were well furnished with excellent bathroom and very efficient air conditioning. A nice bonus was the room safe was free. Public areas are neat, well furnished and clean also.

The reception staff was great, very friendly and helpful as were the staff in general.

The food was ‘elaborate’. It was well prepared and nicely presented but as has been mentioned, perhaps the menu was a little too ambitious and not as authentic as might be desirable. The only criticism of the breakfast and dinner was that the buffet items (desserts at dinner) were not replenished quickly enough and as only small quantities of things like croissants were put out at any one time this did lead to disappointment on occasions.

Service in the restaurant was generally good but seemed to go to pieces the evening the Maitre De was off!. The restaurant staff gave the impression they were quite a new team.

Wine is very expensive (considering this is a wine producing country) in the restaurant (22 Euros for the cheapest house wine) which is disappointing.

The one major moan is the pool area. The pool is fine as is the hot tub but the ‘extensive grounds’ are in my opinion quite small by other hotel standards and not particularly well maintained (no neat edges to the grass, some weeding needed etc). Not a problem but not in my opinion ‘extensive well-maintained grounds’

With regards to sun loungers, and maybe we were just unlucky, we counted 32 loungers and about 20 deckchairs!. Now given this is a 64 bed hotel (so we were told) then you can imagine there were not many spare sun loungers. Loungers were reserved shortly after 8am and all taken by 9am most days. It was impossible to return to the hotel during the day and get a lounger. This was very disappointing. Given the hotel seems to like its rules, I am surprised reserving sun loungers whilst away from the pool was permitted.

A reasonable location, a short (but not too picturesque) walk to the lake.

Overall a good hotel but just needs to sort its sun lounger/chair situation

  • Liked — Cleanliness and staff quality
  • Disliked — Lack of sun loungers
