“Best Christmas Ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2009

My family enjoyed an excellent Christmas break whilst staying at this Hotel. The owners Family Venturini & their wonderful staff made us feel very welcome & couldn't do enough to help us. Also The Italian Travel Company who organised the excursions were outstanding. We spent Christmas Eve in Verona followed by Midnight Mass in Riva. On Christmas Day morning we took a boat trip on the Lake & in the evening the Hotel provided a 6 course dinner + free wine & music for dancing. On Boxing Day we were up early & off to Venice where we were able to visit the main historical sites & places of interest without the normal queues found during the summer months. The local bars provided comfort with hot drinks during the day & the Hotel's lunchtime pizzas & meals were available when required. The Hotel was warm & comfortable throughout. The local shops are fantastic & we felt very safe in this ideal resort. The weather was cold but the sun shone through for most of the holiday. Unfortunately the local ferry services to the nearby villages were closed during the winter months. Our break was booked via Festive Getaways.

Having booked a Christmas break in this hotel, we then read the negative reviews on Trip Advisor and were totally put off this hotel.
However having booked, we had to go ahead but with many doubts. How wrong the reviews were! The hotel was clean, the staff friendly and helpful. Ok, the breakfasts were basic but no more basic than any other Italian hotel. We were treated to an excellent Christmas Day six course dinner, with free wine and a glass of sparkling wine, plus a local band providing music. Don't be put off by the negative reviews, the hotel is good, well positioned and has an excellent view out over the lake. We were on half board and had no problems with the dinners provided, they were absolutely fine, even that on the night of arrival we were late in and too late for dinner so were given a voucher for a free lunch with wine in the restaurant next day. All in all we had no complaints at all. If you want five star luxury, stay in a five star hotel and pay the price!

This hotel doesn’t have too many positives. The best thing about it is its location – it’s right beside the lake and is very handy for the ferries and exploring the rest of Riva. It’s also quite clean.

However, it has a number of big drawbacks. The food is of a very poor standard. We booked our holiday with Italian Getaways so our booking included dinner and breakfast. The dinner options were very limited and the food was of low quality. The dinners reminded me of school dinners or hospital food. We decided to opt for the a la carte option one night which we thought may have been better. It was slightly better but again the food was very bland and not very tasty. If you want good food then don’t eat in this hotel. We ate out at a few other restaurants on the other nights we were there and these were excellent in comparison.

The breakfasts are also of a very low standard. The ‘orange juice’ is sickly-sweet, watered-down orange squash, the ‘fruit salad’ is of the tinned variety and the ‘coffee’ tastes nothing like coffee. On our last day we had an early departure so they gave us a packed breakfast which consisted of a battered orange, dried-out croissant and a carton of fruit juice.

The hotel was also very noisy at night which made sleeping difficult. This noise came mainly from outside. The room was very hot so we had to open the windows, which made the noise worse. There was air conditioning in the room but this didn’t work! To make things worse the mattress was extremely uncomfortable and you could feel all the springs in it.

As we booked with Italian Getaways we had our airport transfers and excursions to Verona and Venice included in the price of the holiday. However, we did not anticipate the amount of needless time we would have to spend on coaches getting to these places. Riva del Garda is 80km (50 miles) from Verona, and it should take about an hour to drive there. On our excursion it took almost 3 hours to get to Verona and the same amount of time to drive back! 50-60 people got on the coach at Riva del Garda at 7:30am and then we were driven down the winding (very indirect route) west side of the lake to pick up 3 other people near Salo. The tour guide provided no explanation for this and became very defensive and dismissive when challenged about it. Several of our group complained to the rep about our treatment and he just laughed at us and accused us of causing trouble! The attitude of the tour guides and reps was very disappointing and angered many of the people on our trip.

Similarly it should take about 2.5 hours to drive to Venice. Our journey took almost 4 hours! This was again due to the indirect route taken by the tour company. Indeed many of our tour group didn’t go to Venice because they had such a bad experience on the Verona trip. They simply could not face spending 8 hours in one day on a coach. The transfer to Bergamo airport also took a ridiculous amount of time. Another thing about the coaches that Italian Getaways use is that they don’t have toilets which is terrible, especially considering the number of elderly people that travel with them.

If you book with Italian Getaways, expect to spend many needless hours on coaches!

Although the Venice and Verona excursions were included in the price of our holiday, we were told that we’d have to go to a ‘welcome meeting’ on our first morning to collect our ‘vouchers’ for these trips. The welcome meeting is just a means for the tour rep to try and sell you more excursions. If you don’t bother going to the meeting you can still go on the Venice and Verona trips as you don’t actually need any vouchers – they just tick your name off a list before you get on the coach. Also be wary of booking some of the excursions. For example, it is much cheaper to buy a ticket to go to Malcesine and Limone yourself (from the ferry ticket office) than to go on the organised excursion. You’ll also have much more time there. The time they give you in Malcesine is insufficient to go on the cable car and see the town properly.

Italian Getaways are the only travel company I’ve ever travelled with that don’t ask for customer feedback! Judging by our experience, and those of our fellow holiday makers I can see why!

I’m very disappointed with how Italian Getaways treats its customers and wouldn’t travel with them again. Lake Garda is wonderful but would be so much better with a different tour company.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of September. The location was wonderful and the hotel was OK. The resort was good - quite flat and lots of shops and places to walk round. There is a good market on a Wed. and the ferry to other resorts around the lake is great. The food was OK but beware the soft drinks rip off - not priced on the menu and €4 a time (£3.20!)! The weather was nice when the sun was out but perishing after about 4pm. The two tours we did to Venice and Verona were excellent.
We went with Italian Getaways (aka Island/ Festive/ Holiday Getaways) and would never go with them again. Their 'exclusive flights' turned out to be Ryanair at 6.30 am and then two and a half hours in a coach! Other guests who went Flybe were told they had to pay an extra £10 if they wanted 20 kg luggage allowance and when they arrived at Flybe were told it was 20 kg anyway and they had been had! Italian Getaways also charged a surcharge and everything had to be paid by cheque in 48 hours (or pay extra). They wanted £40 if you paid by debit card - like dealing with a company out of the ark! So, we'd go to Lake Garda again - but not with Italian Getaways!

Just returned from a really good holiday at the Hotel Centrale. The food was adequate and not sure what previous complaints were about. There was a CONTINENTIAL BREAKFAST, which consists of cererals, rolls, cheese and meats, that is what the breakfast consists of and there was enough for every one. Evening meal was enough, soup or pasta, salad, main meal and dessert. The portions were enough for us both (and my husband is 6ft 2in) and still found it enough, The staff were friendly, polite and very helpful. The rooms were cleaned every day and there were also clean towels daily. We had paid for a lake view and the view we got was brill and would recommend this hotel to anyone

Before travelling we had read various reports on this Hotel, but on arrival we found the Hotel to be excellent. We did not pay extra for Lake view and had a room to the side of the Hotel. We did not spend much time in the room because there is so much to see and do, so room size/view was irrelevant.Breakfast was continental style and was more than adequate. We ate in the dining room every night and the food was wonderful..the staff were kept busy but very efficient. The tour guides on the trip's were excellent, the passion they feel for their country comes through in their information. In Verona it is well worth paying the extra 12 euros for the guide. In Venice we paid an extra 50 euros each and that paid for a gondola ride, lunch and a 1 hour boat trip, which was well worth the money. Overall this was a holiday that was 'out of this world' and we didn't want to come home!

Our holiday was last few days of August and the first few days of September 2008. Riva Del Garda is fantastic and the hotel could not have had a better position - right in the middle of Riva's central square. We paid extra (£40 pp) for a lake view - a little pricey we thought at first but well worth it - this is highly recommended (fantastic views) and if possible get a room wth a balcony (of which there are only three or four, so be lucky). The hotel is reasonable value for money and offered clean and tidy rooms with good beds, pillows and linen. Clean towels are replaced each day which is a bonus compared with some hotels. Showers are good and bathrooms clean. Staff are fine and helpful if sometimes a little "reserved". PLEASE NOTE - keys handed in at reception are left within easy reach of anyone and we did not consider it very secure, especially as the hotel is used constantly by the general public. There are many times when the reception is un-manned. We carried our key with us and paid the €50 for the safe box in the room - recommended in light of the poor security aspect (€50 refundable on departure).
We gave the hotel food a VERY mixed reception. The breakfast being a continental buffet was fairly good. The half board evenng meal however, was sadly lacking. On our first night we were offered a set meal consisting of mushroom soup, meat in gravy with potatoes and a plate of grapes for afters. You have to pre order your meal on a printed sheet for the following evening which we decided against as it offered no vegetarian options or indeed anything that looked remotely interesting. We decided to go a la carte. The deal was 8€ per person off a la carte menu prices which wasn't too bad as the menu had a reasonable choice. It seemed to us that they catered for older people who basically were not looking to be adventurous (or pay extra) with Italian food. It is probably best described as plain English-type cooking (soup, chicken, and a bit of pasta etc etc). Whilst this is only our opinion there were other couples there who ate the half board meals and apparently enjoyed and were content with what they were given. Down to a matter of taste I suppose. As the holiday we booked included half board, we took a chance and it backfired. If we return I think B&B will be our chosen option as there are some great restaurants around Riva for varying tastes and at reasonable prices.
The biggest shock came half way through our week's holiday when we all learnt (whilst on a coach trip) that they would be switching off the air conditioning as THEY consider the weather after the 1st September does not require any further aircon facilities. Apparently they are contracted with the agents to switch it off as the agents would not pay for it after the 1st Sept. We really missed it as the temp got up to 35degrees during day and was still 18 / 19 at night (very humid / sweaty) - something to think about when booking....
Having said all this we have just had a superb holiday and the whole area is fantastic. The hotel is ideal for everything that is going on in Riva and being on the harbour it offers easy access to boats, ferries etc. It is a very clean place - no litter, clean harbour, plenty of activity. In the square, we had fireworks on Saturday night with a huge street party music and dancing, some additional folk dancing on another night, live music from some good pop bands, jugglers etc. Always something happening. If you are interested, take the tour rep's trip to Venice - it's excellent value. The reps are good and helpful with advice and information. Go to Verona - it is great (the opera was superb - finishes end of Aug though). The Dolomites trip into the mountains was spectacular. All in all a great holiday. We will be going back at some stage - the sooner the better.
