“A wedding celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

We stayed in August to celebrate our daughter's wedding and the hotel staff helped to provide a most unforgettable week. From checking in to checking out, we had a perfect stay. There were 14 of us and on our return from the Town Hall ceremony, the 6 course meal in the restaurant was superb followed by an evening at the roof top bar where the pianist continued to entertain us and more wonderful food was provided! Great rooms and fantastic breakfasts either on the roof top or in the impressive restaurant. We spent time most days by the pool enjoying being looked after by either Christina (hope I've remembered name correctly) or Michelangelo. All in all a fantastic week - thank you.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

This is one of the best hotels we've stayed in for some time.

We arrived late in the evening (11pm). The night porter didn't speak great English, but we didn't have any problems checking in. We weren't sure whether we'd be able to get anything to eat at that time of night, but a cold platter of ham, cheese, pizza and fruit had been provided in our room—perfectly adequate, and much better than having to sit in the deserted dining room at that time of night nibbling the same sort of fare, as we've had to do at other hotels in the past.

Like the rest of the hotel, our room on the fourth floor was clean, modern and comfortable… even a bathrobe and slippers were provided, which was a nice touch as you often have to ask for that sort of thing. If we were being terribly picky, the shower did run a bit hot and cold now and again, and two single beds pushed together is never *quite* as good as a proper king size double. And while it was great to have one plug socket on each side of the bed for charging things overnight, the room phone was plugged into one of them, so we had to keep unplugging that at night and plugging it in again when we left in the morning! But these were all very minor annoyances at worst.

The balcony was perfectly adequate, though don't expect a particularly stunning view by default—the hotel is set back 300m or so from the lake and most of the rooms don't face it, so you're more likely to have views to the street or over the rooftops to the mountains if you're on a high enough floor (which we were). And if you're particularly stressed about your privacy, be aware that you're only separated from neighbouring balconies by tinted glass, rather than a solid wall.

A mini-bar was provided with prices much as you'd expect, and should you be really desperate, the TV did have a better-than-usual selection of British channels.

The pool area is situated on the roof, and was a very pleasant place indeed to spend a sunny day. You do get views over the lake as well as the fjord-esque mountain scenery from up there, and the poolside bar opens in time for breakfast should you not wish the more comprehensive offering in the restaurant. You can also have a light lunch there, and there's a happy hour from 6-7pm during which drinks are half price. During the day the whole pool area was generally very quiet, there was never any problem getting a sun bed, and a towel was provided on each one. On warm afternoons, the staff also came round with complimentary slices of water melon to help cool you down!

The unheated pool itself is a uniform 1.6m deep, so you're not going to be annoyed by numpties diving into it, and it has a self-operated jacuzzi area in one corner. While this worked fine, it did need a little attention—one of the buttons was a bit loose, slightly exposing some wiring, and a couple of the jets were either not functioning or missing their chrome trim. Hopefully they'll sort this out over the winter for the new season.

The breakfast offering in the restaurant wasn't particularly spectacular, with a middling continental selection of breads, ham, cheese, cereals and pastries, as well as a cooked option if you wanted it. Dinner was a different story, however—the five course a la carte menu (one course being the optional salad bar) was very high quality indeed, with a good deal of variety every night and everything perfectly cooked. There's also an extensive wine list, though even the local wines start at €20 a bottle, and only a couple are available in half-bottles.

You keep the same table every night for dinner, and we noticed after a couple of days that they'd actually seated everyone such that the English-speaking guests were in one part of the dining room, and the German-speaking guests in another—probably for the benefit of the waiters as much as anything, but it did also make dinner a slightly more sociable occasion than it may have been otherwise.

Speaking of the waiters, they were always friendly and cheerful, and made the effort to remember our preferences so that by the end of our holiday, for example, they were ready with our coffee order at breakfast before we had to ask for it. This sort of personal attention certainly helped to make our stay that extra bit more enjoyable and memorable.

And so to the one really poor thing about the hotel: the WiFi. It was free, but the signal was bad everywhere, and technically it was very badly implemented, with every access point (a couple on each floor) having a different name, all of which made trouble-free roaming around the hotel impossible. Perhaps worst of all, only one device could use your room's username/password combination at any one time. So if my wife wanted to check something on her phone, I had to log out of the WiFi via a clunky webpage on my phone first, and vice versa. A very poor experience for this standard of hotel.

The hotel also offers free use of their bikes for up to 4 hours per day, and has a gym on the first floor. We didn't use either of these facilities, so can't comment on those. There's also a bar beside reception which we never saw anybody serving or drinking in—I assume everyone was just up at the poolside bar instead!

If you're planning to catch a ferry across the lake or do anything else in Riva, be aware that the hotel is actually about 2km away from the town centre if you take the very pleasant walk through the lakeshore park to get there, or a little less if you stick to the main road. On the plus side, the hotel is very near the Flora Gelateria, which is an ice-cream lover's paradise :)

In conclusion, this is a great small, modern, quiet hotel where you can expect great food and personal attention. If you're not on a super-tight budget, you don't have young kids (the hotel doesn't cater for them) and you don't feel the need to stay right in the centre of Riva, it's highly recommended.

Room Tip: You'd probably need a fifth floor room to have any chance of a view of the lake.

Not long back from our holiday in Riva. This hotel was of an excellent standard. The food in the restaurant was brilliant and so was the service. I e-mailed the hotel and requested a high floor as it was our anniversary but we were put on the second which was a bit disappointing but it was very clean and comfortable and the rooftop pool made up for it! The only other thing that was faulting was the Wi-Fi which did not work from the room and we had to use it downstairs near the reception area. Other than these niggles we would highly recommend this hotel and would definately return to Riva and the Krystal Palace.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better the view

Dear Joanbelfast,
thanks for recommending us. We are glad that the Kristal Palace is of an excellent standard for you. We upgrade you at the second floor in an Elegance room, it was the best we could do as the hotel was fully booked.
It will be a pleasure to welcome you again

We have recently returned from the Kristal Palace Hotel in Riva del Garda, The food was excellent and waiter service in the dining room was very efficient and friendly. Our room was very modern and extremely clean and so comfortable. This hotel must be the best in the area, and just a twenty minute walk into Riva town. We will definitely be returning next year.

Room Tip: All rooms are positioned well.

The Kristal Palace hotel is an upmarket hotel in the wonderful town of Riva. The staff are excellent and Michael the barman is one of the best he made our holiday one to remember, also Uri was great a very nice young waiter. The food was excellent and very well presented, the hotel had a great music player/singer every night except when some German guests in the penthouse complained about the noise about 9-30 so the music was cancelled for the next evening.Other than that i would recommend this hotel to any one who likes a small hotel where the staff will go the extra mile to please their guests

Pros Roof pool is fantastic, rooms very nice, quiet area no traffic noise

cons Not many rooms have good views, some noise from other rooms can be heard but not often after 11-30pm

Dear ClarkieHarlow,
thank you for your kind words about the staff. It is very important to satisfy all our guests from the service, to the food and the music. We apologies for the cancellation of the music entertainment for one night, it was caused by the sickness of our music player.
We will be glad to welcome you again

My wife and I have just returned from a holiday in Riva. We travelled with Riviera
Travel (who were excellent) and stayed at the Kristal Palace.
I fully endorse all the positive comments made by other reviewers about this
hotel and it must be one of the best resort hotels that we have stayed in having
travelled throughout Europe over many years.
The staff were very efficient and friendly from the reception team, the porters, the
cleaners (who keep the whole place spotless) through to the bar staff, waiters
and the chefs who produce marvellous food.
The rooftop pool (which has a Jacuzzi section) is not very big but perfectly
adequate as it was never too busy and had enough sunbeds for everybody
(so no need to reserve one!).
A few reviewers have complained about the "thin walls" of the rooms but we
had no problems (room 304) . There was the occasional faint sound of
voices and running water but this was no worse than many other hotels and it
should not put you off.
My only slight criticism is that the modern programmed air conditioning took
quite a time to master and it would be a good idea to have printed instructions
in the room.
Overall, the Kristal Palace is a superb hotel situated in a quiet area about a
mile from the centre of the very attractive town of Riva.
