Just come back from a week at Hotel Kristal Palace. Booked our holiday through Monarch, which was cheaper than Thomson's by £300 which took into account that we had to spend £240 on a return taxi transfer (which we would recommend despite being quite costly).
Hotel is very clean and decor is modern. Only possible criticism was that the beds are twin and are put together so we missed our king sized bed at home.
Food was delicious and impressive for half board- for every evening we had a glass of prosecco, followed by "chef's special", then a starter which was pasta based/soup- there were 4 choices, then an optional salad bar which was very tasty, then onto resuming the main course of fish/meat/vegetarian and finally desert. We would definitely recommend the salad bar as the main course is typically Italian with limited vegetables and probably only potato.
The staff in the hotel, and in particular the restaurant were always polite and couldn't be more helpful- we need to mention Marco the maitre d' who was always smiling and even tolerated our rather dodgey attempts at Italian!! Talking to other guests who were also foodies they were all very impressed by the food- no courses were ever repeated over the whole week and there was a lot of choice on offer which make it difficult to choose!!!
Before dinner we would highly recommend Michelango's happy hour cocktails on the roof top which is between 6-7pm and cocktails are 50%, so 3/4 euros each which are very alcoholic!!- we had to lie down after our long island ice teas!!! Drinks at other times are quite expensive- 8 euro for a gin and tonic!!
We ate breakfast every morning in the main restaurant as other reviewers commented that there was less choice on the roof top. The buffet was extensive and it set us up for the day.
It is a medium walk 20+ minutes to the centre of Riva Del Garda (so older guests might find this a struggle), but it is a pleasant walk alongside the lake and it is located right next to the Co-Op which is useful for stocking up with bottles of water!
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay- best bits- happy hour cocktails, looking forward to our supper every night and piano playing in the restaurant and on the roof top after dinner. Only criticisms- beds (!), pool is a little too warm- quite like a warm bath- but we assume this is because it is on the roof top and it is exposed to lots of sun during the day.
