“Unspoilt beauty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

This is still an undiscovered part of Italy just an hour north of Rome. It is stunningly beautiful, with hill top towns that have stood for centuries, olive groves and winding paths going down around the hills. It certainly rivals Tuscany for natural vistas. Food is local cuisine, fresh ingredients and always friendly service, even when you only have 5 words of Italian. This is not Rome and few speak English.

“Medieval villages perched on rolling green hills”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2012

Everything is so close so you can drive around and see lots in a very short space of time. The hills are full of olive groves and vineyards, little shops selling oil and homemade cheese, restaurants with amazing views of the plains below

“Nice Italian Countryside - For connoisseurs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2011

The Sabine Hills are a region of about 30x15 km between Rome and Rieti, in central Italy. In the area there are more than 30 medieval villages, with churches, castles and so on. The area is incredibly characteristic and the villages are in general smaller and harsher than in regions such as Tuscany and Umbria.

The advantages of this area is in its relative proximity with Rome (50-70km) so that it can be visited in a week end, or used as a base to visit the city. The main disadvantage is that this proximity has spoiled some part of the area, especially around the main centres. Also the area is not very developed from a touristic point of view, and this can be an advantage or a disadvantage, according to the points of view.

“Just wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2007

The Sabine Hills, as they are called here, is really an entire region which could easily please and cater to a number of visitors with various interests: culture, history, food, nature, etc. Depending on where you base yourself, or even if you're just travelling around, so many opportunities abound. The best part of the Sabine, however, is how off-the-beaten-path it is. Whatever you do decide to do, you'll definitely see more Italians than anyone else; even Romans doing a countryside drive stand out!
