“Can't recommend this hotel highly enough”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

My Mum and I spent a week at Villa Maria and are already planning to go back. As soon as we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and the staff were all very friendly and very helpful.

We had booked a standard twin room but it was more than we expected and essentially we had a private terrace with a fabulous view. The room was immaculate and comfortable.

We ate in the restaurant most nights, the food and wine were excellent and the service outstanding.

Ravello is a beautiful town and Villa Maria is a haven of peace and I can't recommend it enough.

Not an easy hotel to get to - all the warnings about hiring small cars are fully warranted. And although the sister hotel Giordano has a car park there is still a 10 minute walk up to Villa Maria - fortunately with luggage taken care of by the car park attendant and his electric cart. The effort is worth it. Superb position, stunning views and cheerful helpful staff. We were glad to be in the upper part of the town for the views, walks and ambience even though that means a walk down to the town centre to go anywhere - and back up again! The narrow pedestrian only streets are agreable, with the scent of jasmine and honeysuckle everywhere in May/June. And there are nearby treasures such as the gardens and infinity terrace of Villa Cimbrone and the Villa Amore restaurant (see separate review). But probably not the ideal location for people of limited mobility.

We had a wonderful stay and loved this hotel. Due to room availability we stayed in the enormous and beautiful first floor suite (with stunning views to Amalfi, and a private terrace larger than the hotel breakfast room) and then moved to an adjacent room for the last few days. This produced the only important blemish on our visit, since the latter corner room on the first floor proved particularly noisy, in part due to the fact the wedding party season was in full swing and the (deservedly) popular nearby Villa Eva venue for such parties is reached by the pedestrian street at that side. It would have been a better experience to finish in the suite, but the corner room is probably best avoided in season.

Breakfasts were better than usual in Italy (there were even some decent croissants, and a good fresh fruit salad heavily dosed with lemon juice of course, though coffee still needed an expresso poured in to hit the spot), and the young breakfast staff were exceptionally helpful and pleasant. It was a close run decision every morning whether to have breakfast on the terrace or inside as the weather was a touch cooler than normal and there is a wind off the valley. Either way the views are great, though the terrace itself, hanging off a mountainside and covered by vines and wisteria, and fringed by jasmine covered walls, is lovely and one of the most striking things about Villa Maria. We wanted to love the dinners and lunches on the Villa Maria terrace but in truth were a little disappointed. It's a great spot and the hotel has it's own large and impressive produce gardens (which we were able to explore) and most of the staff are sympatico but the food felt a bit bland and aiming for a cuisine level which it didn't reach - neither top quality Italian food of character, nor international cuisine, but somewhere confused, and a bit expensive for what it is, in the middle. But since there are many great places to eat in Ravello, with the best often the most 'ethnic', this conclusion after three tries caused us no hardship and had little effect on our enjoyment of the stay.

Our 'average' rating of service needs an explanation. The reception staff, the chambermaids, and most of the restaurant staff were unfailingly helpful and pleasant. However the person who appeared to be the manager or representative of the owner family we found patronizing and not very sympatico and we felt his service has to be given particular weighting. We would otherwise rate service very good.

the hotel is not cheap but the prices are fair for what you get, and probably the suite is excellent value compared to rooms in other hotels in Ravello. If you go to the Amalfi coast in season go to Ravello - it's just about the only place you can still escape most of the tourist tat and the traffice jams, and the views are to kill for.

Room Tip: The main suite is huge, beautifully furnished, with a very large terrace on two sides and stunning...

The room was o.k, I guess for the price I was expecting something even more special.
The pool was the highlight, not far in the sister hotel, a quiet few lengths was just what the doctor ordered.
No real wifi in the room I was in. The balcony area had a good view. Not far from the town and the parking was free and a porter sorted out our bags. Great views and photos in Ravello.

We just loved our recent stay at Villa Maria. This hotel has it all - but what makes Villa Maria stand out from the rest on the Amalfi Coast is the staff. Their willingness to assist with our many enquiries was very much appreciated. I also enjoyed the cooking class and wandering through the hotel's organic garden. Ravello is a beautiful spot and staying at Villa Maria was like heaven on earth.

Room Tip: Superior Rooms with balcony views to Scala and the Amalfi Coast were spacious and comfortable.

We arrived after a long day hiking through the mountains and were tired and hot, to find our room not what we expected, small and without a great view. As we were staying for 2 nights we wanted to experience the Amalfi Coast at its best. The staff immediately gave us two other options and were extremely helpful. We ended up in a beautiful room with a stunning view and enjoyed our stay very much. The staff continued to be very eager to please and the standard of the Hotel is exceptional, we would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, too good to miss!

Villa maria is a beautiful romantic hotel with tastefully decorated rooms and good service. From their terrace one has the most amazing view over the coast. The restaurant is one of my favourites in the world, try their spaghetti alle vongole or pesce alli aqua pazza, with a glass of prosecco and enjoy the view .. One of the most beautiful things in the world!

The Hotel Villa Maria combines old world charm, attentive service, beautiful views, and excellent food into a truly memorable stay in the best vacation spot on the Amalfi coast. Breakfast and dinner on the outdoor terrace is wondeful--one of the best ways to begin and end a day. One afternoon, the owner of the hotel (and the Hotel Giordano), Vincenzo Palumbo, took a group of guests to see the former palazzo and garden of author, Gore Vidal, a home he had bought and is now renovating for a new hotel. What a terrific experience! The Hotel Villa Maria also has its own vegetable garden that guests can visit.

Villa Maria is near the "top" of Ravello so it is a substantial walk down to the central piazza and of course, up and back to the hotel. However, the location provides privacy and quiet that is often missing from hotels surrounded by shops and restaurants near the middle of town. Villa Maria is also a 5-minute walk from Villa Cibrone, a fantastic sculpture garden open to the public, that should not be missed!

All in all, we recommend Hotel Villa Maria without reservation!!
