“Beautiful views and accommodation built into the cliff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Beautiful location, overlooking the bay of atrani. Apartment spacious and really clean with everything you need. Pool lovely and plenty of space. Spent 8 nights there visiting around the area, so much to see, as well as chilling locally and astt villa rosa. Car really beneficial to visit ravello and further ( there is a bus service however) atrani (quieter beach abd cute little square with local life. mistral reataurant delicious food and fruendlt service) and amalfi walkable but there are lots of steps! Makes the gorgeous food a bit more guilt free though.

“Magnifico!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012 for a stay in October 2012

Hidden away on the side of a mountain - this property is truly incredible. The views from each window and around every turn are spectacular. The unit is quite large & very comfortable. However be prepared to walk - alot! Even if you rent your own vehicle this area requires walking up/down steep inclines/steps.....kept us in shape and hungry for more pasta! Ancient paths lead down to a lovely small beach in Atrani. The town of Ravello is a 10 minute drive further up the mountain - although there are paths you can walk as well if you really want to!
Beware of the driveway - steep and narrow!
Property manager is nice but does not speak english at all, which can be a little challenging.

“Fantastic place to stay on the Amalfi Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

Casa Sesta is part of a ten-unit complex tucked into the spectacularly scenic Valle del Dragone ascending from Atrani to Ravello. It is actually "Residence 6" at Villa Rossa (residencevillarosa.it) You can go direct but renting through Summer in Italy is a great idea. The price is about the same and they are worth their weight in gold in prompt service, payments, and dealing with language barrier issues. They also bundle all the charges so you are not hit with such things as a cleaning fee *and* a garbage removal fee.

As you will have read in other reviews, rent the smallest car you can. It will not only be easier to get in and out of Villa Rossa, but to maneuver all around the Amalfi Coast. I don't recommend the SITA public bus service unless you are simply too petrified to drive here, as they are usually SRO in high season and waiting in an orderly line is unknown to the Italian psyche. I'm 60 years old and didn't find the steps down and back to Atrani too much at all. Going up to Ravello and back on foot, of course, is madness unless you're part mountain goat.

The placement of the property is about as beautiful as it is possible to imagine, with a sweeping view of the valley down to the sea and up to the mountains. From the lovely, well-maintained swimming pool area you can look up to the belvedere of Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. For the most central, large open terrace view, however, you should rent Suite Quinta (Residence 5 at the Villa Rossa website), but Casa Sesta is a close second. Its roof terrace carved into the mountainside is a protected nest. Yes, the rock gives off a bit of dust, but nothing that can't be sponged off easily. It's true the spiral steps up discourage use, but the view will draw you up at least for breakfast and cocktails in the glorious changing light.

The caretaker is quite friendly and one manages to make one's self understood. I could cite only a few areas for improvement at the property, the grounds of which are beautifully kept with peach, fig, lemon and all manner of lovely flowers. Electricity is expensive in Italy, but you will be disappointed to find that the impressive rock outcropping in the kitchen is lit at night by the most garish and ugly flourescent lighting imaginable. The light in the oven hood was not working and the only relief was to bring in a table lamp from the bedroom. As if realizing this, the owner provided a candle, but of course it did not fit in the candle holder provided.

Casa Sesta's kitchen could also use some textile love. There are no placemats, no cloth napkins, in fact, no paper napkins, either. The cupboards are tabula rasa -- don't expect to find anything more than a few packets of sugar. Not even dishwashing liquid, salt, sugar, or any other basic -- you will have to buy all and start from scratch. The flatware is a mismatched assemblage worthy of a prison mess hall. Pots and pans are cheap but adequate, with a few orphan pots with no lids and lids with no pots. Don't plan on baking in the electric oven. The broiler just barely gets hot enough to be useful; if the oven itself ever actually reached the temperature advertised on the controls there would probably be a black-out along the entire coast.

What makes it all work besides the location is that the fishmonger (Pesceria del Doge) down in Atrani has such beautiful fresh products, ditto the butcher and fruit and vegetable dealers. Patronize them, they are accustomed to point and pay. You will be amply rewarded. If you don't cook I wonder why you are here, but there are restaurants worth patronizing around Atrani's little square and beach area. Best to avoid incredibly touristy Amalfi just around the corner except for the sights.

The bed is very comfortable and the sheets all-cotton and of substantial high-quality. The towels are excellent by Italian standards, even if the promised change of them mid-week never occured. There is no Internet access, but if Residence 8 is not occupied there is a cable for access on its roof deck that one is welcome to use.

Minor issues aside, let me re-emphasize what a glorious property this is. Another review mentioned earplugs, but I have to say that's absurd. The windows are very noise-proof when shut, and the only "noise" we're talking about is the calming rush of a hidden stream far below, the wind, a distant dog barking or cock crowing in the morning, church bells, and perhaps even the tinkling of the bells of a goat herd coming into the valley to graze. The whole experience is a bit of heaven that you will love.
