After almost two weeks of sightseeing in Italy, we wanted a relaxing break by the beach. The Hotel Del Golfo certainly delivered. It's located on the beautiful sandy Procchio beach, about a 28 euro taxi ride from the ferry terminal. Most of the guests had driven there but we had toured Italy by train and so took the train to the Piombino ferry. We were not particularly interested in touring the island. so we stayed at the hotel area mostly, though we did go to Napoleon's Villa with friends who had a car.
We had a second floor room in one of the low-rise units with a view of the sea. It was large and had a nice bathroom and terrace. We swam in the bay every day and the water was perfect, though very changeable. The first two days it was like a lake and the last day it became a bit rough.
The breakfasts were nice on the outdoor terrace. Most of the guests seemed to be on the half-pension plan which also included dinner. We were not and were very happy, since there are a number of nice informal restaurants on the beach.
All in all, a perfect break in our trip in an area that seemed to be undiscovered by Americans.
