“Living on the edge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

This being my second visit to the hotel, we're continue to be impressed with this hotel. From arrival to departure, the service, the room (which they upgraded to a suite) was impeccable. We don't think there is a view more beautiful (that is for each room). We dined there and the menu reflected a diversified cuisine that was served as all good Italian food is served (Oh those courses). There is so much to this property it is difficult to put into such a short experience. The property was closed October 13 for the winter, so if your vacation plans have Amalfi on the list, I'd consider this a luxury destination.

We had a great stay at Grand Hotel Tritone to finish off our two week trip to Italy and Greece. We booked this hotel for the views and were not disappointed. Our room was ok and the view from it was awesome.

We booked a Capri pickup from the hotel and this was amazing and a great value. We also went to a winery called Tenuta San Francesco Winery. We found it with the help of the hotel staff and no GPS and had the best time of our trip. Private lunch with the winemaker's family! It was also nice to have our car at this hotel which is a must to go out to restaurants in positano and praino.

The staff was nice, not the best English but they were helpful. Beach access and pool access made for a relaxing last day of our trip and we had a pizza down at the beach that was good as well. Rooms and hotel could use an update but overall we enjoyed our stay.

This hotel was not my first choice, wanted to stay in Positano but waited too long to book. After spending three nights here I would recommend it with a "BUT". Bring your holiday attitude with you, we did and had a blast, hotel is definitely quirky with its endless elevators and hallways, sitting rooms that just appear and retro furniture. We were in a junior suite, which is in the lowest floor of the hotel, this involved numerous stairs, hallways and 2 elevators just to get to our room. The room was large, air conditioning worked well, tv did not (didn't really care), large balcony with outstanding views down to the swimming pool and sea. Room was clean, large bathroom, only had shower stall but it was good size. Bed was comfortable (hard) but that works for us. Furniture was not very inviting to either look at or sit in but we were only in the room to sleep. One issue in the room was that the toilet kept running and staff either did not or was unable to fix.

Overall we enjoyed the hotel, great swimming area down by the sea, great terrace for pre-dinner drinks (Antonio the waiter is fab), had dinner in the restaurant once, best mussel soup, breakfast was standard fare but in a lovely outside breakfast area. Leo at the front desk was friendly and very welcoming to us. Absolutely amazing views, breathtaking. The trip down to the swimming pool was an adventure, 2 elevators, stairs and a tunnel. Hotel is a bit isolated, had to take a taxi into Positano twice for dinner at 25 euros each way. I believe you can get a bus during the day (cheaper) and a boat service into Positano until 7pm (30 euros each way I think). Overall the hotel was fun, we were with another couple and just kept laughing about our adventure non-stop. I am normally very picky about where I stay but I think this hotel was definitely an experience I am glad I did not miss. If you can overlook minor flaws and don't mind being a little bit out of town and enjoy the best things the hotel offers - views, views, views.

Tritone is not a 4 stars hotel!!!
The room and bathroom are so 50 years ago designed and equipped, looking really sad. It is like in a grandma's house.
Guys at the reception never heard of customer care or attitude.
Restaurant, medium quality but pricey.
Pros for Tritone: fantastic view, great rocky beach, very colorful and nice staff in restaurants.

Room Tip: Never accept a room on the level under the restaurant even if the reception clerk will sell it as be...

I also had read all the reviews before booking and I think in most cases they are pretty fair. Unanimously, the views are terrific, and the hotel has probably relied on that over the years. I liked the decor from a by-gone era although the beds were not the best in terms of comfort. The beach area by the sea is fabulous and the breakfasts were of a good standard with lots of choice.
BUT whoever owns this place have got to get their staff up to speed with the basics of customer facing service! We were greeted with a cold and stony faced demand for our passports without a hint of welcome to the hotel etc, and it was the same story on checking out...sort of here's your bill and enter your pin code here, without any "we hope you enjoyed your stay.." sort of farewell. The best people here are the guy who does the car-parking (...genius at moving the cars around) and the chamber-maid who had a lovely smile and greeting.
They obviously had an issue with a blocked drain when we were there and when I asked them to try and resolve it, the suggestion was that we should open our balcony doors to let the fresh air in....bizarre, when you consider that there was an army of mozzies outside waiting to feed on us!! Also the restaurant is hellishly expensive. We ate a three-course meal with wine on our first night and it came to 142 euros for two people. We didn't make that mistake again. Eat at La Strada in Praiano, a fabulous place that will even give you a free lift back to the hotel after your meal.
I would recommend it for the views and the experience of staying perched on an 800ft cliff overlooking the Amalfi Coast, but having done it, I probably wouldn't go back.
Smile guys - it would make all the difference.

Room Tip: All rooms are sea facing I think - we had a deluxe but I think it was just a bigger balcony than som...

Mixed feelings about the Grand Hotel Tritone...

On the one hand, the cliff-side setting is simply exquisite. We opted for a junior suite, and we were blown away by the sea view from our large balcony. Some more pluses:

* Friendly, helpful service.
* Good food (not great). Lovely breakfast buffet.
* Relatively reasonable price for the area.
* Location (about 10 minutes by taxi to Positano) - somewhat inconvenient if you're relying on buses, great if you can catch a boat at the hotel's dock, and pretty convenient if you're daring enough to make the treacherous walk into the town of Praiano (walking will take about 25 minutes). As for us, we found it wasn't a big deal to walk, and we enjoyed some really yummy restaurants in Praiano.

On the other hand, this hotel is OLD SCHOOL. The public areas are old, but still retain some bit of elegance. Our suite, however, was just plain old. The bed was hard, the pillows not the least bit fluffy, and the shower pretty dingy. I'm pretty sure all the maids smoke (as does EVERYONE in Italy); therefore, all our bed linens - even "clean" ones - smelled like an ashtray.

But, the views...! So, it's a tradeoff, I guess.

Clearly, this hotel is not for everyone. In addition to my description, please note that it would not be a great choice for families traveling with small children, or elderly people, or anyone who can't manage multiple flights of stairs. (This could be said about the entire Amalfi Coast, BTW.)

Nor should you expect white-sand beaches on the Amalfi Coast. The "beaches" are all ROCKS! Personally, I don't care. I was there to enjoy the culture and the cuisine, and that I did.

Reviews I read prior to our stay had warned me about all this, but we booked anyway, arrived with low expectations, and were pleasantly surprised by all the nice features this hotel has to offer. Recommend you do the same, if this hotel fits your budget. :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the lobby. You may get free WiFi! (We did.) Also, you'll be closer to th...
