“Amazing service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

We visited this restaurant last Friday and had the complete opposite experience to the previous review . I didn't like the first Pinot Grigio I ordered so they bought another a local from Ravello which was delicious without any fuss . The food was excellent not as fancy as Donna Rosa or Next 2 but good rustic local dishes served with a smile and much enthusiasm . We were collected from our hotel and dropped back without any messing about and I would definitely recommend this place good food good service and a lovely family run restaurant .

“Not sure what the hype is about…”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

I rarely write TripAdvisor restaurant reviews but felt compelled to comment on this place given what a disappointment it was. What is everyone getting excited about – a bit of free food and a comment book shoved onto your table at the end of the meal to write your own glowing review? Yes, the staff is very friendly. The restaurant is a 15-minute drive from Positano. There is a shuttle offered, but if you’re not careful, it’ll be full when you’re ready to leave, resulting in a 30-minute wait. The food is unspectacular. There is no view. (I like how other reviewers note that they visited in the rain, but are “sure there’s a lovely view when it’s not raining.” No, there’s not.) The prices are perhaps a hair less than elsewhere in Positano, but you would be better served walking to a better restaurant in Positano.

For Il Ritrovo, we had our hotel book a dinner reservation, and luckily had one made for that same night @ 8 pm. The complimentary shuttle came and took us up to Montepertuso, which is always an interesting ride. Once arriving, we made our way to the restaurant and were actually surprised that there is not the exceptional view that so many others offer...but no biggie. Next, we were promptly seated, greeted with complimentary prosecco, then proceeded to wait until we finally had a chance to order our food and wine. The waiter actually had us order less than we wanted bc the size of the local fish/seafood dish was very large (which he was correct!). Next, the complimentary appetizers came, which were decent (zucchini flower, bruschetta, some sausage roll???), and eventually, our eggplant parmigiana arrived and was good (13 euro). However, none of our drinks, including the wine had shown-up, and only did partway through the antipasti. The wine we were suggested was actually out, thus we were suggested a second one, which tasted very unique (~16 euro). Eventually, our fish and pasta dish arrived, in a large pan. This was not the "gran," but a "Chef's Recommendations" meal that included local seafood and homemade pasta. The seafood consisted of baked local fish (YUMMY!), clams, mussels, and fresh pasta in a tomato sauce. The meal was delicious, and though a huge portion, we finished nearly all!

Next came the waiting; we waited for over twenty minutes after finishing (which had taken a lot of time) and were asked if we wanted desserts, but never ordered. Eventually, we ordered the pear ricotta, and we waited again. The dish arrived twenty minutes later and was not delicious; there was too much "cookie" taking away from the light taste and we ate half of this (6 euro). Then we waited thirty minutes...asked for the bill...waited......thirty minutes went by....waited...a waiter came and asked if we had lemoncello and we said no.........waited fifteen minutes....eventually asked if wanted bill, and we said yes.......waited fifteen minutes....eventually bill came! We immediately gave a credit card....and then waited another fifteen minutes, but then he swiped our card, and then we waited another five minutes. You get the point; basically the end was a disaster. We paid (and were never served the lemoncello) and got outside to catch our shuttle, which, you guessed it, we waited for approximately thirty more minutes (because it had dropped off a group in Praiano). As an fyi, all of my times were underestimates, but waiting definitely summed-up this experience. We were both really upset, and not just bc this had received such high ratings on this site. The food was good (nothing spectacular), but service was miserable and ruined everything.

We booked a reservation to Il Ritrovo based on its sterling reviews on Tripadvisor (#1 ranking). Unfortunately we cannot add another. The restaurant is a 15 minute drive but they arrange transportation to and from--- this is nice, but also necessary given the crazy roads! The restaurant has a nice view from the mountaintops and we were quite pleased upon arrival. Our food ended up being okay--- pasta was good and we appreciated the gluten free option. We were not blown away but not complaining either. Coming from New York City, where excellent Italian options are plentiful, our food seemed average.

Where the night went really sour was upon trying to pay our bill. It took over an hour. We asked multiple waiters to deliver it and seemed to be summarily ignored. You are stranded up there until you pay and then can go down to the parking lot to wait for the next van to take you back to Positano. Normally this would not be such an inconvenience, but we watched multiple other tables get their bills and walk out to take the shuttle home, while we were ignored. We finally made a bit of a stink to get our bill and were then scolded by the waiter saying there was not even a shuttle on site yet to take us back-- "what is the rush?!?!" (despite having now missed the last 2-3). It ended up being a 3-4 hour affair and we only got onto the overcrowded next shuttle because a few nice guests who had arrived to the restaurant later than us insisted, having witnessed our trouble first hand.

On the whole, we were left with a pretty bad taste in our mouth, mainly on account of the experience rather than the food itself. Can see why some people like the place but beware of getting stuck and poor service. Normally would not complain, but being the #1 recommendation on Tripadvisor is a high standard, which was not met.

“wonderful, wonderful”

We absolutely loved this restaurant, and it was one of the best we had in all of Positano. The complimentary ride up to the top of the mountain was beautiful when it was light outside and dark. We received several gifts from the chef that were fabulous. I can not say enough about this restaurant. I don't think that anything on the menu was bad, even the grilled vegetables were to die for. If we had learned about this restaurant earlier, we certainly would have gone back.
