You will have seen all of the reviews for this hotel and noticed that virtually all are glowing reports. There is a reason for this. It is a fantastic hotel, or more to the point it is a good hotel staffed by fantastic people.
If you visit the hotel, when you get there you will notice Trip Advisor Awards proudly displayed and rightly so.
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel for two weeks in early July so we got to know the place pretty well, warts and all as they say.
As I said in the first paragraph it is a good hotel but it is the people that make it very good.
There are several groups of people that you will come into contact with, firstly
RECEPTION (Front Desk)
Francesco is delightful, nothing is too much trouble, everything is possible, and he really does know everything. He says that he is the Driver and Lorenzo is the navigator. I'm not so sure. Lorenzo is an absolute charmer, a joy to talk with and you kind of get the idea that he would be good company on a night out. My wife certainly thought him very charming, so I made sure she stayed close to me!!! One of the local shopkeepers said of Lorenzo "it would be cheaper to buy him a suit of clothes than to take him out for a night!". He really is excellent. How can I describe the beautiful Laura (La-ooh-ra), except to again say beautiful, with the most winning smile and such a wonderful way with guests, I wish we could have taken her back with us she was wonderful. Then we also had Mario and Ferrucio both very helpful and friendly. I have to also mention the Night Porter, young Marco an extremely polite and helpful young man. Top marks to all of them.
THE BREAKFAST CREW
Ada (Aah-da) is the person you will mostly see on duty at breakfast as she is the hardest worker and the friendliest. If there is an area for criticism for this Hotel it is the breakfast area. The food is good, they have a fantastic Orange Juicer, best I've ever seen, but this Hotel is good because of their staff. Other than Ada the breakfast crew are a big disappointment none more so than Vittorio. My advice to you Vittorio is get another job. You obviously do not like interacting with guests. Romeo and Catello I think could be fine but they seem to take their lead from Vittorio, having said that I did see Catello laughing with another guest so maybe it was me(?). Anyway thank goodness for Ada!
We arrived at the hotel early and our room wasn't prepared which wasn't a problem. But during the first few days we would leave our room early and return mid afternoon to find that it had not been serviced. This was annoying. However I mentioned it once to Francesco and from that moment on the room was always serviced first thing. Excellent service, and the cleaning staff were always friendly and smiling. Top marks again.
Most reviews state that the Restaurant is the absolute best. It is certainly looked after well by Carla and Marie-Anne, if you don't book they will tut at you with mock disapproval, then probably give you a glass of Prosecco if you have to wait, lovely people. Having stayed there for two weeks I have to say that the food was OK rather than fabulous. We certainly ate much better at other establishments in town. Pleasant enough though.
THE TERRACE CREW
As my wife and I enjoy a pre dinner aperitif ( or in my case one or two of them!!) we spent some time with the terrace crew. The absolute star of this bunch is Rafael who runs the terrace with slick efficiency, where nothing is too much trouble even for guests who could be, shall we say, demanding. Rafael together with Matteo, Valerio and Roberto will ensure that your stay on the terrace will be fabulous and very very friendly. From this crew we learnt most of the nicknames of the rest of the staff, but I shall let you find them out for yourself. It was real good fun talking with them.
What a charming and friendly man this was, we had a brief nod of acquaintance most nights and he was good enough to give us some history on the wonderful letter on display from John Steinbeck to his father and uncle.
Overall a great stay with the slightest of disappointments being the unfriendly behaviour at breakfast other than Ada.
There are lots of other comments to make all positive but the last word to Lorenzo (Lori) for trying to teach me some Italian. Grazie.
