JUST STAY HERE. Having travelled the world and stayed at many luxurious hotels before, I can comfortably guarantee that the Villa Tre Ville is hands-down the best in Positano and surrounding areas, and also one of the best in the world. My boyfriend and I had the most romantic stay there and fell even more in love -- with each other and with this special place.
To start, the Villa Tre Ville transcends all hotels -- this is no mere "hotel" but felt like we were staying at a friend's private villa. It was, in fact, the former mega villa of legendary theater director/producer Franco Zeffirelli, so it certainly has style and panache. Many celebrities have stayed here, past and present; Kate Moss was a recent guest of Tre Ville and loved it so much she stayed for two weeks.
On your holiday you can truly relax -- unlike at normal hotels, here you won't see constant bills being thrust in your face after each and every meal, poolside drink, snack, equipment hire or gym access; at Tre Ville you are free to roam, use the facilities and be served all day, whatever you may desire.
The restaurant is a fantastic outdoor terrace under the cool green shade of flowering vines, dramatically overlooking the deep blue sea and the town of Positano to the north. The gorgeous kitchen opens out to this terrace; you can watch the chefs cook your meals with the freshest produce, and there a table is laden with fresh fruit which you may help yourself to all day.
There are no menus here; there are daily specials and simply state your preference (salads, pasta, fish, shellfish, meat) and the chef will cook up southern Italian specialities. A few of the dishes I had during my stay, all phenomenal: a classic spaghetti vongole (clams), real buffalo mozzarella with huge tomatoes straight from their own garden, local red prawns in herby breadcrumbs grilled on lemon leaf, ricotta ravioli, grilled red snapper, chicken milanese, tagliata (grilled beef steak), fantastic spaghetti bolognese, parma ham with prosciutto, and a fresh octopus salad.
The rooms -- I toured a few and each are differently designed to have their own unique character. However they all share in the Villa Tre Ville aesthetic: a colourful mixture of beautiful ceramic tiles, beautiful fabrics, quirky antique furniture and fine art pieces, all the while exuding a cool, clean calmness. The amenities (shower and bath gels, soap) are all by fabulous Aromatherapy Associates -- what a spa treat!
The hotel has 18 rooms, all usually booked out and yet we hardly saw many guests during our stay so it felt very private and intimate. This is due to the large size of the property and lots of freedom to roam its many areas on different terraced levels: the small pool overlooking the ocean; the wonderful herb garden with lemon trees and tomato farm; the chicken coop (fresh eggs!); the breathtaking lounge (an all-white, Moroccon themed lounge which open out to yet another outdoor terrace); the charming library; the outdoor gym; and the private beach.
The staff are kind, thoughtful, caring and always cheerful; they know your name and treat you like family, but are always highly professional. They also organized a last-minute trip to Naples and Pompeii; within 20 minutes I had a car and a Pompeii tour guide booked for the whole day.
Anyway, what more can I say but... JUST STAY HERE. You'll be spoiled for life after this, but god, is it worth it.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Villa TreVille provides a unique, boutique hotel experience within a historic, oceanfront estate of about two hectares (five acres) in one of the most fascinating and exclusive places in the world: Positano on Italy's storied Amalfi Coast. This private paradise has an accommodation complex of four independent houses: Villa Bianca, Villa Rosa, Villa Azzurra and Villa Tre Pini. The villas contain a total of 15 guest suites, two with private gardens. Each suite is named after a special guest who has left his or her mark in the annals of the estate and on the arts world, their achievements honoured and recalled in part through the furnishings and art objects, with atmospheres further enhanced by the particular spaces and settings and uses of light and colour. Guests have exclusive access to the seaside sundecks and the dock for the estate's private motor launch through elevators and stone stairways cut into the landscaped, rocky promontory. The villas and amenities are artfully in harmony with the cliffside gardens and pathways that invite exploratory strolls between pergolas laden with vines and cascades of bougainvillea, where every turn can reveal touches of traditional craftsmanship and creative imagination. There are the original Vietri antique ceramics, or exacting reproductions, and extensive handiworks of local artisans such as the hand-painted plates produced exclusively for Villa TreVille by Rosalinda di Sorrento or the glasses made for the house by Venini, the historic Venetian manufacturer of glassware in Murano. The refurbishment of the entire property initially was under the artistic direction of Franco Zeffirelli, the opera and movie maestro who lived on the estate for 35 years. The work subsequently was continued with meticulous attention to essential details by the former proprietor, Giovanni Russo, who was advised by architect Fausta Gaetani, a friend of Mr. Zeffirelli's and a frequent guest at Villa TreVille. ... more less
