“Cute small hotel with amazing views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

We had a great time in this unpretentious small hotel. It is a family business so everyone makes an effort to make your stay is just perfect. Every room has sea-view, but some of them have a small terrace rather than a balcony. If you can afford it, don't hesitate to get the ones with terraces in which you can enjoy a bottle of wine as aperitivo at dusk. Unbeatable.
In my opinion, the breakfast could be improved by adding more fruit and variety in choices.

Room Tip: Rooms with Terrace worth the difference

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Il Gabbiano. As far as I could tell, the entire hotel was recently repainted and immaculately clean. The view from our upper floor balcony was spectacular! We had three adults in a room and found the accommodations to be very comfortable. The continental breakfast was good, but nothing special. As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel is a family run business and has a more casual feel about it. Everyone we met was pleasant and accommodating. Lucia, spoke excellent English and was very happy to offer travel and sightseeing advise as well restaurant recommendations. Other family members, spoke minimal English, but tried to be as pleasant and accommodating as possible. (Their English is much better than our Italian!)

I thought the location was good, half way between the main road SS163 and the town below. It was then convenient to use the SITA Bus to explore other towns along the coast.(One must remember that all of the towns along the coast are built on mountainsides and thus make it somewhat difficult to negotiate with luggage or if physically impaired in anyway.) We decided to use public transportation to get to and from Positano and to avoid renting a car. Although the trip from the Napoli train station to Positano is a bit challenging; having a car on the coast is more challenging and expensive.

For those wanting to use public transportation from the Napoli train station, you must catch the Circumvesuviana commuter tram to Sorrento located on the lower level of the station. The commute takes approximately an hour because the tram stops a least twenty five times along the way. Once at the Sorrento station, exit the upper level and purchase a SITA Bus ticket in the convenience store on the street level. The bus to the Amalfi Coast leaves from a bus stop across the street. The trip from Sorrento to Positano is another hour. Once in Positano there are two major bus stops. The first is Chiesa Nuova and it is the closest to Hotel Gabbiano. From the bus stop the hotel is a five to ten minute walk down Via Pasitea, or you can take a short cut down a long flight of stairs and then turn right on the road for a short distance more.

There is no restaurant in Il Gabbiano, but there are several restaurants just down the road. We highly recommend Saraceno d' Dro and Ristorante Mediterraneo. Both have great food and very friendly service.

Room Tip: I think the rooms on the upper floors probably have the the best views.

The service here was terrible right from the start. Staff were rude, condescending, inappropriate, and really made us feel like they were doing you a BIG favour letting us stay in their dirty little hotel.
We were really looking forward to our stay in Positano, and had been planning it for nearly a year It broke my girlfriend's heart when we saw the room, not only was it kind of small, but the floor was filthy (literally, they had not swept under the bed for some time, there was lots of dust, hair, dirt etc etc), and the bathroom was disgusting - obviously someone had vomited in the bathroom quite recently and they had not bothered to clean it up, you could still smell it very strongly, and you could actually still see it on the floor. Also, the towels were the worst i've ever had in any hotel, b&b, hostel...in fact anywhere - they were some weird kind of square things that were like thin bits of cardboard.
Breakfast was pretty dismal all round, but the did have a coffee machine - the problem is that even though they were making coffees for themselves, when I asked for one the looked at me like I was stupid and pointed the pot of instant they had sitting out on the bench (which was disgusting).
Yes, this place has an amazing view....but so does anywhere in Positano. Don't ruin your trip, stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: All seem to have a view, but not worth it

I stayed in this hotel 2 nights and switched to another place. The hotel operators can be curt and unfriendly. One of the staff members was kind and helpful but is not a member of the family that runs it. Rooms are small, dark and IMO depressing. I needed a blanket one night and discovered the one in the closet had black mold stains on it. It is quite a trek down to the beach and lower Positano, so be aware of that when choosing a hotel there, location is important, especially when climbing back up after a day or night near the Sea. I echo other comments about lack of friendliness here by other guests and consider service and attitude of staff critical to my experience at a hotel. There are many fine choices in Positano so there are options.

While the location and views were nice the cost and poor service outweighed the view. During our stay several family members were ill and getting things like ice or hot water were virtually impossible. The rooms were dank with little ventilation and we were constantly quizzed by the staff on the location of the patio keys. The staff had a comment or a rule for everything which really made the experience feel like staying with very grouchy in-laws. Do a little research and find more accommodating accommodations or stay in Sorrento (the prices are better and it's within a short drive of Positano).

Yes, the view is good. But seriously, there are as good or better views to be had in a lot of places on the Mediterranean. The hotel is bad with entire decor straight out of 1970s: everything is old, creaky and occasionally smells of mold; pillows are old and thin; soundproofing is non-existent (could hear the next three room in each direction blowing their noses and coughing, or worse); towels resembled table cloths (they were basically thin cotton napkins); no toiletries were provided other than basic liquid soap. Breakfast was OK - nothing special. No parking and it took us an hour to find street parking (this isn't the hotel's fault, but just FYI). And all of this for $360 per night (we got quadruple room to share, which came with one large and two small beds). Glad we only spent one night.

Hotel Gabbiano is evenly poised halfway on the Positano hillside, so its a 10-15 minute walk down to the beach and the same to the top to catch buses to othe Amalfi towns (shorter if you take the steps). So not the best of locations, but not bad if you like walking and strolling through the town. Can be very hot to do in summer!

The views from the rooms are great, since its perched high up. The rooms have good-sized balconies overlooking the sea, which is great. The rooms are basic and adequate - the fridge didnt cool too well - no question of ice, which was a downside in the summer months.

The main downside was the service and staff. The breakfast was very basic and the same every day - some bread, sweet buns, yoghurt, sad selection of fruit, some ham... very uninspiring. The hotel refused to give you ice from their bar / kitchen even when we were willing to pay for it - and its quite a walk in the heat to the nearest shop where you can get some, so that was ridiculously petty of them. The hotel only served 2 types of sandwiches on their entire menu, so eating in is not an option.

On the plus side, the bus stop to take you to the beach is just outside the hotel, and cars can drive right up to the entrance. The hotel has an elevator. Its reasonable and a good option as a base in Positano if you dont want too much out of the hotel except a place to sleep/ enjoy the view. It is clean, comfortable, with all essentials in place.
