“A Little Piece of Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

When most people travel to the Amalfi Coast in Italy and stay in a picturesque town such as Positano, they hope to find the perfect hotel. Well, look no further than Villa Gabrisa, a quaint boutique hotel with nine rooms, some of the best views in town, a fantastic restaurant, and a wonderful family who are happy to enhance your visit in any way that they can. Villa Gabrisa does not disappoint in any way. All nine rooms have balconies that overlook the sea and are furnished tastefully with Italian antiques and local art. For those who like to hike, the beach is reached by walking down stone stairways that wind through small plazas and narrow passageways. For those who are less mobile, the local bus, that makes a continual loop throughout the town, stops 25 feet from the front door of the hotel. I found the food at Villa Gabrisa's restaurant called Da Gabrisa to be some of the best in town. I especially enjoyed the chicken dishes and the home made pannacotta. You will not regret booking your next Italian vacation at Villa Gabrisa which is a little piece of paradise.

Room Tip: ask for the rooms with the largest terraces.

Having enjoyed first-rate accommodations in both Venice and Bellagio, my wife and I were prepared for what we thought might be an anticlimactic stay in Positano since we had visited before and were nearing the end of our 16 day excursion. How wrong we were! Far from being a letdown, our 5 day sojourn in Positano proved to be the highlight of our trip, left us hungering for more and disappointed that we simply couldn't stay longer. This marvelous experience can be attributed to two factors - the charm of Positano, an unspeakably beautiful postcard of a town that cascades down the mountainside from the Amalfi Drive to the sea, and the hospitality of the Rispoli family, owners and operators of the Hotel Villa Gabrisa. This boutique hotel sits up higher in the town, away from the crowds and noise of central Positano, but still close to shopping and a considerable array of restaurants. Not that you need to venture far for a superior dining experience. The Villa Gabrisa's restaurant offers one of the most eclectic menus we found on our trip and both preparation and presentation were impeccable, so atypical of the usual hotel restaurant. You may choose, depending on your taste, to dine inside or outside (with a fabulous view). The wine and liquor list is extensive and, like the meals, among the most reasonably priced that we encountered. You don't see exactly the dish you've been craving on the menu? Ask for what you'd like. If they have the ingredients available, they'll prepare it for you with the same level of quality. This kind of responsiveness to customer wants and needs permeates the entire establishment. Everyone with whom we interacted -managers, servers, housekeepers - all were focused on providing a welcoming environment and assuring a satisfying stay. The hotel, itself, is immaculate and redolent of flowers and lemons. Our room (we decided to spend a bit more for a suite) was magnificent - spacious yet warm and beautifully furnished with antiques and opening onto a huge balcony. Not that we spent much time watching television here, but the number of choices of English speaking channels and American programming was unlike anything else we have found in any Italian hotel. The amenities (linens, robes, incidentals) were of a quality we have generally found only in Ritz Carlson's or Waldorf's and to cap it off - a Jacuzzi to deal with any residual soreness after a day of hiking up and down Positano's famous steps. As a matter of fact, one of the nice features about the hotel's location is it proximity (less than 100 feet) to a bus stop. After a day of shopping and sightseeing, if a climb up the steps seemed a bit daunting, we simply spent a couple of Euros for a bus ride to the top which was a treat in itself. We were most impressed with the family's involvement in even the tiniest aspects of the Villa Gabrisa's operation as well as their obvious effort to make all of their guests feel like family. There may be less expensive lodging alternatives in Positano, but we cannot conceive of one with greater value. We will be back!

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were delightful, but the suites are out of this world!

We stayed at the Hotel Villa Gabrisa last week for 2 nights as part of our 10 day trip to Italy. I had booked a standard room a half year ago. When we arrived, the girl at the front desk informed us that we were being upgraded to a larger room for one night, but would have to move to a different room the second night. We thanked her and assumed we would be in a standard room the 2nd night. The upgraded room was beyond description. Immaculate, luxurious, with a large balcony, overlooked the sea. We ate dinner at their restaurant that night, and it was delicious. In the morning, we packed our things and left them by the door, as instructed. Much to our horror, when we returned from a wonderful day at the beach, we were given a key (not a hotel room key) and shown 2 flights of filthy stairs in an alley up to someone's apartment, next door to the hotel! There was someone's cell phone charging, the pillows and blankets were stained. This was NOT a hotel room. My husband asked for our original standard room, booked back in February, and we were told that none were available. They comped our dinner, hardly compensation for a dirty apartment. The owner, a woman from New Zealand, was rude and uncaring, and actually had the nerve to say that we should be grateful, because the apartment was bigger than a standard room. We will not be back, which is a shame, because the property is beautiful.

Room Tip: The hotel room was immaculate and beautiful. Make sure they haven't overbooked BEFORE you arrive...

Before asking to someone to be honest you must be sure to tell the entire truth of the story. You originally booked 2 nights in a standard room in the attic. Has been offered you to receive bigger rooms but you have to move on the second night. You accepted but you can understand that once you confirm the moving and all the check in are made we can’t turn back the rooms. The rooms where a suite on the first night and a double room studio on the second night always in our building, yes we have other rooms from the side as our hotel is built in an historic building in town which has different entrances for different sections of it. About the room you come back at 18.30 in the evening of the second day and the only blaming from you was that on the room was not like the suite, which this you already knew by the check in but also it was not the room which you had paid for, and about the tree which was below the building which was disturbing your view of the sea, confirming that the room was nice and you didn’t come for the room in Positano but mostly for the view, as told to the staff and spoke in front of witness. No other problems have been reported to us and any accessory of the room how has been explained to you were part of the room. We was so sorry that you was not happy of the view of your room that we even propose you to change hotel in a superior category of room or offer you a free dinner and not because of repairing of any type of mistake made but just to make you happy. Again, you was free to choose and your choice was for the dinner which you ate without any limits on your order, including alcoholic drinks and wine. No one of the staff including the owners been rude and uncaring, this because we are a family owned hotel and our guest are treated as friends and not just like clients and we just told you that we was sorry to hear that you was not happy of your rooms because originally were booked a much smaller room in the attic. Hearing this hurts a lot and specially after been given so much, receive such complain not directly in our face and after a while is just like receiving a knife in the back.

If you're looking for a cozy hotel nestled in the mountains of Positano, with a spectacular view of the water/mountains and very nice rooms...the Hotel Villa Gabrisa is the place.

Our spacious room had a balcony overlooking the water. The views are amazing. The staff was very friendly too. We had a wonderful breakfast overlooking the water.

We booked this hotel solely on the Trip Advisor reviews..it is truly a fantastic place to stay in Positano.

We stayed at Villa Gabrissa for 4 glorious nights a few weeks back and left wanting more... It is a perfect "Inn" centrally located yet slightly away from the hassle and noise of the touristy center... Reasonably priced, the hotel is impeccably clean, welcoming and very well maintained. The family running it takes pride in everything they do and their attention to every detail is obvious. From antique pieces of furniture to the art on the walls to the high quality beauty products which to my surprise were L'occitane en Provence in the bathrooms...For the first night we had a suite with a stunning view of the entire bay... The suite included a large living room-dining room combo with a pull out couch, a large bedroom with a separate sitting area. A good size bathroom with a shower and a huge terrace with lemons hanging off the trees. Water view from every corner of the place... The suite also had a fully functional kitchen that to our surprise included a pizza oven... This suite is part of a larger villa which makes it into a very unique experience... If travelling with kids this would be a perfect way to have privacy and lots of space while not breaking the bank... For the rest of our trip we stay in a standard room which was not huge but very functional. The room was well furnished, linens were crisp, tv offered all possible channels one can desire and of coarse a great little terrace for evening sunsets if you happen to be in the room... It had a writing desk, a small walk in closet and a well appointed bathroom with shower. The view from the balcony was just lovely. Here instead of lemons hanging off the trees we were treated to grape vines...It was extra special to stay at such a comfortable, clean, modern, perfectly located, safe hotel. The staff is friendly and helpful, service is outstanding overall. The restaurant on premises is far more superior to the rest that we've tried in Positano. You can enjoy your meal at the tables outside overlooking the water or indoors under air conditioning. The restaurant offers an extensive wine selection and a diverse menu that includes sophisticated local dishes. The menu is creative and has something for everyone and yet if you do not see something you'd like they will gladly make it for you. Our breakfast was included, they served house baked goodies and the freshest selection of fruits, yogurts and juices... It was as just as fantastic as the rest of it...We are more than satisfied and can not wait to plan another trip to this amazing "home away from home".

We didn't stay there as hotel. We had just stopped there to have a glass of wine at the end of the night. The wine was really good in a very reasonable price. The view is fantastic and the service outstanding. After that we came back for dinner and or was great - again.
