“A treasure”

Hotel Poseidon

Jul 10, 2008

I am finally getting down our thoughts about this wonderful hotel. We picked it based on all the great reviews and at the time it was #2 in Positano. We wanted to be a little up the hill away from all the tourists coming and going. And the pool looked so inviting. Since we have returned, I have been keeping up with all the reviews. It is amazing how someone can have such a different experience. It is now rated #9. I just have to say we loved this Hotel!!. We did request a quiet room based on other reviews about the street noise. We had room # 33. We were given a package of dried pasta as a room gift and fresh flowers were on the dresser. The room was quiet and a nice size with a large deck big enough for 2 lounge chairs, and a table and chairs. The view was amazing. The bath did have the green tile, but we saw that same tile at Le Sirenuse. The bath had a shower and bath combo with a rounded bottom. I must say that was a little odd. The best part was the lovely restaurant. We would be tired after a day of sightseeing and were so happy to come back to our room, change and just go downstairs to the lovely pool and veranda dining areas. We ended up having dinner each of our 5 nights right there. The waiters are so charming and remembered our previous choices for example, the water, wine etc. At our first night we met the charming Alessandra. We were not sure who she was, but we smiled and she came over to our table to chat and tell us that she would give us suggestions for restaurants etc. even for Rome.
The food at the hotel was delicious, wonderful local fish, pasta and salads. It was fun to meet other guests who were enjoying the dinners each night. After dinner we would go inside to the living room and sofas for an espresso and sit by the fire and enjoy the entertainment. Again the waiter would remember us each night and give us helpful hints about the weather or sights to see. We were never given a bill for those meals. They just kept a tab each night and it was on our bill at the end. It ended up being quite reasonable when we compared to our stays in Rome and Capri. We had a lovely full breakfast each morning which was included in the price of the room. Again with those cute attentive waiters. I think the charm of the place is the friendly staff. By the way the elevator is the oldest one in Positano...so charming. After our 5 nights here we were off to Capri for 2 nights. We noticed that our large suitcases would be a problem getting on the boat. When we inquired about this at the reception desk the men said no problem, "just store your big suitcases with us and take a smaller bag" . This was a good suggestion. We ended up storing our big bags and then came back to the hotel and they arranged a car for the ride back to Rome. We are looking forward to returning to the Poseidon.

We had an asbolutely wonderful stay at the Hotel Poseidon.

We had a junior suite which was very large, and simply but nicely furnished with a small outside patio to sit on in the evenings. The bathroom was a very good size with a separate shower. We did catch a peek at some of the standard rooms and they seemed quite a bit smaller.

The staff are all simply amazing from the front desk to the bar and restaurant - we stay at hotels world-wide very frequently and they were amongst the best we've ever experienced. Nothing was a problem and anything from restaurant recommendations to ideas for day trips were given to us in a friendly and informative way.

The restaurant is extremely good and amazingly good value given the other options in Positano. There is a marvelous view from the terrace across the valley and into the bay and is well worth a try.

We would undoubtedly recommend this to anyone wishing for a stay in a small, customer focused, friendly hotel.

The Hotel Poseidon is a $250 a night hotel posing as a hotel worth twice the price. On the plus side, the staff is very friendly and helpful, but that is as far as it goes. Our room was tired and small, and rather spartan. The towels were threadbare and the soap and plastic cups were more Motel 6 than a four star property. Views are nice from the balconies and common areas, but the elevator is an interesting, but very inconvenient anachronism. If your idea of after dinner exercise is climbing 324 steps up from the beach, then this might be the property for you. But, I doubt that many people will find that attractive.
Overall, we were terribly disappointed and would not recommend this hotel.

From the time we arrived in Positano and at the Poseidon, we were made to feel at home and immediately feel in love with this place. Everyone was cheerful and more than just pleasant! Our room was a little small, but this is the European way. However, we had a large bath and patio. We didn't visit Positano to stay in the room all day anyway! The front desk arranged drivers for us, as we took day trips to Sorrento/Capri and Almalfi/Ravello. Both day trips were most enjoyable and the drivers most friendly with great stories and friends to share in every town. Giovanni, our waiter in the outdoor bar area, was very friendly and we enjoyed our chats with him. We did not miss an evening of taking in the view, and relaxing with great wine and appetizers. The Amalfi Coast area was our favorite out of all of Italy and we will definitely return--and to the Poseidon.

“Management needs to be a little kinder and less snobby to guests”

Hotel Poseidon

Jun 9, 2008

When we arrived at the hotel, we were so excited to be in Positano. You cannot imagine the disappointment we felt when the front desk never once smiled upon greeting us. It was almost businesslike. Once we left the darkness of the lobby area and ascended to the second floor sitting and pool area, the view was so pretty, that we overlooked the snobbiness of the front desk. But then again, you could be anywhere and be happy with the fabulous view of the water and town.

The rooms were OK. Very sparse. Our bathroom was a good size, but some of the others in our party had very small bathrooms and had booked rooms of equal price. So not all bathrooms and rooms are the same size.

Breakfast was passable. At least it wasn’t just pastries and coffee. On the contrary. The wait staff at the restaurant were so nice and Livia especially always had a smile on her face.

The spa was almost claustrophobic. The rooms were very, very small and it was very hot. Almost stifling. For a hotel that advertised as their source of pride their wellness and spa, I was a bit surprised that it was so skimpy.

I think what really topped it off for all of us was that while we don’t expect the royal treatment, at least a smile from Alessandra and the owner would have been nice, especially since we stayed almost a week and booked several rooms. I saw the owner and Alessandra mixing and mingling with other guests, but never once did they stop and speak. Our entire party noticed that and it became a joke as to who “made them mad.” As we were leaving, we did see both the owner and Alessandra in the lobby. Yet not one time did they acknowledge us or thank us for being their guests, etc. It was so odd. And actually many of the staff just looked like they were constantly walking on eggshells. There was a friction there that you couldn’t quite place your finger on, but it was not a jovial place to be, I can assure you. It was such a let down from the fabulous time we had in Rome where that hotel treated us like family—and it was a much nicer 5 star hotel.

Go figure. Oh yes—one person at the front desk did stand out. Paulo was so sweet. He was the only one who really went out of his way to help and he was always very happy and that was contagious. They hotel needs about 10 more of him.
