We stayed in Room 5 – I think what is meant to be the best room - for 4 days in June. We paid full rate so it wasn’t a cheap break. On arriving my original reaction was disappointment in that while the room was quite large it did not feel as grand as anticipated. The two balconies are barely more than shelves – one with beautiful views upwards to the town and the second with a sea view over the roof of the more modern part of the hotel – but they could take two tiny, tiny chairs. The second balcony was pretty much without purpose for us and as I am certain that the views from the other rooms along the corridor would be pretty much identical to the remaining one these would probably be my recommendation – particularly if you are not intending to be in them much.
However once we unpacked the romance of the room and the view started to take hold and we discovered that it was equally nice sitting slightly back from the balcony with the windows thrown open (and sorry environmentalists) with the aircon on in the two more comfortable chairs enjoying the view in relative privacy. Two campari sodas and Dean Martin on the I pod and the spell was complete.
We have been to Positano before and stayed in the heights. When we were there we looked enviously at the residents of Palazzo Murat as we were about to embark on our climb / bus trip to our hotel laden with beach kit and sweating already. It has the perfect location – far enough from the beachfront to give peace and tranquillity but near enough to access with a lovely stroll and relatively little effort.
Parking nearby at 30 euros a day was expensive but convenient so if you are driving it is recommended.
I think charging 4 euros per bag for porterage from the car to the hotel is fierce and unwarranted given the costs of a stay. This theme recurred with the hotel charging extra for internet access and even eggs for breakfast. Having paid 455 euros a night we felt this was a little mean.
Service at breakfast and round the bar is informal which is nice and the staff were smiley and pleasant however probably not what you would call top notch – commonly you would have to extract them from a corner when you wanted a drink in the courtyard in the evening.
Restaurant is nice and a bit more of an occasion than on the beachfront. Yes it is quite expensive but the location is charming, the tables discretely apart (rather than packed together on the more beachfront venues) and the service impeccable.
The acid test is would you go back and the answer is undoubtedly YES.
