“la dolce vita - Palazzo Murat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2011

There are many joys to be found in traveling, especially to a place as filled with history and beauty as Italy. One of those must surely be the shoulder-season room upgrade! LOL - but seriously, what's more fun than finding out the gorgeous room you booked has morphed into a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom suite complete with an enormous living room and a kitchen?
I chose the Palazzo Murat in Positano after much angst and research. Tripadvisor rated it #1 on the Amalfi Coast. Could it really be better than my first choice, Le Sirenuse, a stylish gem? The Conde Nast Gold List is seldom wrong, but as it turned out - no children allowed at Le Sirenuse. My only real reservation about Palazzo Murat was the rooms are not directly facing the sea. But so many great factors made up for that - the central location, the quiet ambiance, the amazing gardens and easy access to the main beach.
The Palazzo Murat is located three minutes walk below the main road, which eliminates road noise issues. It is two minutes walk above the main beach via delightful stairs and alleyways full of shops. This eliminates noise from the beach and its adjacent restaurants. Even the church ceases ringing its bells from 7pm to late morning. Quiet comfort is the byword at the Palazzo.
Go to Positano (off season) and stay at the Palazzo Murat. It is a gem! All of my pictures are posted on my blog at:

We stayed in the Hotel Palazzo Murat for our honeymoon and were so happy with our choice of hotels. The hotel is gorgeous and is located on a perfect pedestrian walkway with art galleries, shops and restaurants and is just steps to the beach. The staff was very helpful and kind- upgrading our room for free and giving us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our honeymoon. The breakfast buffet was delicious. Our room was outstanding-spacious room with high ceilings and two balconies, complimentary bathrobes and slippers, large bathroom and stellar views of Positano. If we ever are lucky enough to return to Positano we will definately stay here again.

We stayed Hotel Palazzo Murat for a few days around Easter. The location is great in Positano, at the very center of the small town and with easy access to restaurants, shops, the beach, boats etc. A charming but exhausting part of Positano life is the fact that there are more stairs than streets leading to many hotels and some restaurants, so whether you stay at Palazzo Murat or not, make sure you know something about the location of your hotel in relation to sea level... Breakfast (and potentially cocktails and dinner) is served in the beautiful courtyard. The staff is very attentive and helpful and the food is excellent.
We stayed in the newer part of the hotel with a balcony facing the lovely garden with lemon trees right outside. It is an oasis away from crowds of tourists. The beds are great and rooms are nice and spacious, and I suspect they keep nice and cool even in the summer.
Positano is well worth a visit in itself, but I would not go here on a beach holiday. The beach is fairly small and likely to be very crowded in the summer. It is, however, a great location from which to discover the Amalfi coast and surroundings. There are daily boats to Capri and Amalfi as well as local buses so Sorrento with connecting trains to Pompei.

Room Tip: All rooms are likely to have their charm! :-)

The Palazzo Murat was the best choice of hotel we could have made in Positano. The location is perfect - close to the beachfront to not have to walk up hundreds of stairs every time you go out, but also you feel in the heart of the town. Despite this it also feels peaceful and calm with its lovely gardens. Our room was spacious, kept impeccably clean and had a lovely large bed, but the best part was the beautiful view from our balcony, overlooking the dome of the church and the sea to the left, and the steep rising buildings of Positano straight ahead, with lemon trees in the garden below. The restaurant was also great - good food and service in a beautiful setting. Breakfast out on the patio (in April!) was lovely and on the one morning that it rained the indoor dining room was also charming. The hotel has a relaxed charm about it, you feel you are staying somewhere really lovely yet it is not stuffy in any way. We will definitely be going back.

Don't have a bad thing to say about the Palazzo Murat. My husband and I spent 3 nights in the old section of the hotel (ocean view room) last week, and everything was exceptional. The room was beautiful, full of character, and very large; the staff was extremely helpful; breakfast was fantastic and the terrace was beautiful; location was extremely convenient to beaches and shops.

Would definitely come back here!

My weekend at Palazzo Murat was exactly what I wanted- a quiet weekend away from the beach crowd and tourists. It is one of the only 4 star hotels in the town with a place to sit outside and relax and that is exactly why I chose it. The garden is an oasis- like a secret garden- and it is truly a treasure to be able to escape everyone but yet be so close to the beach and the restaurants. The breakfast was delicious- fresh seasonal fruit, yogurt, granola, cereal, eggs, breakfast pastries...etc. The staff were all so courteous, so friendly, and so helpful. It definitely had an old world charm to it, and you really felt as though the hotel was well-managed. I ate at the restaurant one night which was beautiful and romantic, sitting outside in the garden, and the fish was of course very fresh.
The bathrooms are slightly dated and I found the bed to be a little too firm, but there is turn down service and the quality of the staff definitely make up for shortcomings in the room. It is a shame the hotel does not have workout or spa facilities. If i could suggest one thing to the hotel, it would be to update the bathrooms.
Definitely do Christine's Discover Positano walking tour- it is a great 2.5 hours and 20 euro well spent!!

My husband & I have just returned from a 3 night stay at Palazzo Murat. There are many reasons why it's No. 1: Its location is great. It's close to the beach but removed from the
noise and the curious. It's close to good restaurants & shops.
The gardens of the hotel are just beautiful. Having breakfast in the courtyard is truly magical.
We were upgraded to Special Room #24, and it really was very special, because it had a large terrace with a view of the church & Positano.
Service from everyone in the hotel was exceptional. We were always served with a smile.
We would specially like to thank Antonino and Concetta who made our stay so very memorable.
We have been to Positano many times before, but this was our first stay at Palazzo Murat. It will not be our last.
